The computer is a dual G4 1Ghz with 2Gb of Ram and two hard drives. Used to run a custom built microscope in a scientific lab. Resurrecting it is imperative, as the cards and other equipment are now out of date and replacing the computer and cards would be enormously expensive (and worse, would mean switching to PC).
There are several issues: -No response to selecting "About this mac" from the apple logo in the upper left. -No response to selecting restart or shutdown -The computer freezes up (pinwheel) whenever I attempt to access System Preferences (window will appear however once mouse is over it, pinwheel appears). -does not recognize the USB key needed to run a piece of software.
-together these issues prevent us from installing the software needed to control the scope.
I've tried reinstalling (clean not archive) the OS on the original HD and a new HD. The problem doesn't go away.Have also cleared out the systempreferences.plist and the cache for both safari and preference panes.
Recently completed the Maverick operating system update. Still getting used to new additions, however I did notice I'm unable to access the Safari preferences section. Â
I know normally, you would follow the drop down menu and click into the safari preferences. Unfortunately now the words in the drop down menu are a lighter grey and unable to click into he section.
I am unable to access "System Preferences" . When I clock on SP it takes me to the Desktop/Screen Saver which no longer works. It appears to be attemtping to load pictures but after 5 seconds I get the spinning wheel. I always have to "Force Quit" the program.
System Preferences appear corrupted within 10.6.8 - mouse will not activate any commands within any preference and will not close Finder windows (or initiate apps with a double click as it used to). Have tried rebooting and resetting PRAM and NVRAM.Â
Another user account on the same machine appears to working without issue. Think my young son may have dabbled with system preferences after he downloaded Minecraft last night.Â
Whenever I need to restart my MacBook Pro, a bunch of my preferences are lost. For example, I have to drag Google Chrome back in the dock. I lose my Expose preferences, login items I've disabled still pop up. Keyboard shortcuts with Spotlight (which I keep disabled because of a program I use), get set to default. It's terrbily frustrating to have to reset all these things over and over again and I can't find the answer. Part of it is I'm not terribly saavy with computer language. I can find the Terminal and type in commands though.
I need to know how to make it so all user accounts can use System Preferences, only the Administrator Account can open Systerm Preferences. This happened when I updated to Snow Leopard.

I recently discovered after installing the new Snow Leopard OS that I did not have a bluetooth option under my system preferences. I own a mid 2008 Macbook Pro (pre-unibody, more info below) and I know that I've used it before. I recently took my computer in to be repaired by Apple because the keyboard and trackpad were inconsistently responsive, and to fix it they simply replaced the entire top panel (with the keyboard and trackpad). I have also checked under the system profiler and it says that there is no information available for my bluetooth...what exactly does this mean? Did they forget to reinstall it? or what?
I watched a video and it was very loud so I went to System Preferences and turned the sound down. But now I can't mute by clicking the F9 button as I normally can. I can mute by going to System Preferences but I don't want to do this. Before I changed the volume in System Preferences, the keyboard keys worked fine for volume adjustment. I could make it quieter, louder or mute.I have tried with checking and not checking the option to display volume on the screen (in System Preferences).

I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a MacMini Server. Just set up the computer up and am trying to get user accounts for all of my family members. I have set up two Admin accounts, and want to set up a standard account for my child utilizing Parental Controls. When I set up the user, there is no box to check that says "Enable Parental Controls" and there is not Parental Control Icon in the System Preferences>System tab next to the "Accounts" icon. I have updated the system software using "Software Update" and have no programs or apps installed that did not come with my server from Apple.
My computer is running slow and I looked at sys pref groups and it's full of things like app server admin and system and procview and it's never been there before. Am I hacked? can i erase them?
Unable to retain "short year settings" in Preferences > Language & Text > Formats. Â
Am able to set the year setting in the customize window to two digits with the pop-up menu for the year, which then appears correctly when the customize window is closed. However, after the Preference window is closed and re-opened, the year appears in 4 digits. The is occurring on one of the accounts. Â
The same procedure was used to set the date formats in the Administrator account, where it worked correctly.Â
trying to add a new user or do anything in system preferences that requires me to unlock - I type in my password (correctly) and the lock will not open.Using a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Snow Lepoard (10.7.4) logged in as adminstrator user.
I cannot access the Accounts pane from System Preferences. Each time I click on the icon, I get a message that says "system preferences has quit unexpectedly. I've already repaired the permission, deleted system preferences plist, installed the combo update and logged in as a different user. Everything else works just fine.
Info:MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)Unable to access accounts
Lately I am unable to access an increasing number of web sites. Sometimes the word "forbidden" appears. Other times there is just a note that Safari is unable to show the site.
The icon is gone, and when i click apple>system preferences, nothing happens. I need system preferences and this is very frustrating. Could I possibly have deleted it from my hard drive while clearing up un-used files?
I cannot bring up my system preferences under the blue apple icon or through a search. I installed and ran MacJanitor v 1.3 a month or so ago and perhaps that's the cause? I have been missing my Mail prefs for a long time so switched to Thunderbird but I don't know if the two incidents are related. iMac G5,1.6 GHz, 1.5 GB, OS 10.3.9
My MacBook Pro freezes when attempting to access System Preferences. I am able to Force Quit but that's it. Screen went black for about 30 seconds earlier tonight. Never had a problem before a previous update.

I had to reinstall the OS but have a complete copy of my old hard drive. I want to get my old iCal calendars back. I have read on sites that they are stored in HD/user/library/application support/ical but this folder does not seem to exist in snow leopard...
