OS X :: Access Denied - Projects Core System But Console Logs?
Jun 8, 2010
I'm trying to get Prey anti theft working on my macbook. It runs manual and the site says it checks out but a test run didn't seem to work. So I checked console and found: com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10a740.cron[2330]) Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access Then as I go poking thru console for further clues I notice that I'm denied access to certain logs. Even normal stuff like Itunes crash and such. I'm logged in as admin and I don't recall ever noticing this on my old imac running Panther. This one is running Leopard 10.5.8 and I'm still pretty new to it. Am I missing something here? Why am I denied access? I know it protects certain core systems but console logs?

I recently opened my system files and noticed a file called deferred install. When I tried to open it ,it told me I was denied access to this file even though I am the owner and only user of this computer.

Any ideas as to why my iMac wants to log off constantly. I have it password protected to wake up (purely to keep my kids off) but no other power saver features activated.Whenever I walk away for any period of time, it has tried to log out and may have stalled due to the fact that I've left Safari open or the like, but otherwise logs off completely.

A while ago I opened the console.app. I was trying to empty out some logs. It now turns out that in the process I turned off logging. I normally use geektool to monitor the computer logs console.log and system.log but they are now both empty. Can anyone tell me how to turn them back on?

We recently installed a mac pro running serverX 10.5.6.(2x3.2 Quad Core Intel Xeon, 16GB 800 MHZ.) I was able to connect to the server from my imac (leopard) and use ARD (V3.2.2) with no problems. Now, since I had shutdown the server for about a week I started it up the other day I am now unable to access it thru our network. On my IMac I try to access using ARD the server lists: "Access Denied". Using GO-Connect to Server I get the message "Connection Failed The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP and your network connection and try again."
I can ping the IP address from my imac. The server is able to access the internet, so I know it's not my network. I have used Disk Utility (on the server) and reset the permissions. After hours on Apple's site and googling I am at a loss. I'm thinking it has something to do with access permissions or something got tweaked at startup (no startup progs in Accts login window) after I turned the unit off for over a week.

I am on a ship using a proxy server from our ISP to connect to the internet via a V-SAT satalite dome. We all have individual accounts and the guys using PC's have no problems connecting to the internet. My account also works on a P.C. However whenever i try to connect to the internet I get an Error message 403 "the following URL could not be found" "access denied". However if I disable my proxy settings reconnect to the internet then re-enable my proxy settings I am able to get on line but only for a minute or two then I get the message again. Switching off my proxies then on again always gets me on line but only for a very short period (30 secs to a minute ish).
There has been an occasional time when I have been able to access the internet for longer but only when there has been 3 or 4 people on line and browsing at the same time. I have spoken to my ISP and he thinks I may have been piggy backing onto someone elses account but was unable to offer any other advice and referred my case to someone else and I am still waiting for their response. I am running a mac book pro on snow leopard 10.6.4, using firefox (have the same problem with Safari) with proxy set to "use system settings" and my network preferences set with the given proxy server settings (192.168.10.132, port 3128). I have the same problems using WiFi or cable also.
Other info: my IP address stays the same. Although my cable IP is different from my wifi address. IPv6 is set to automatic. I think the problem lies with my mac as my given user account works on PC computers ( which I am using now!). Also there are 3 other guys with mac books who have also had the same problems although they are now at home. I have also tried changing to a guest account with similar problems although I cannot change proxy settings.

Trying to install Dreamweaver MX2004 on the only computer I own that I can still run the program on - 10.4.11 MacBook with plenty of space - and I get this error message.
Of course there is no way, other than spending countless hours of reading thousands of posts and millions of worthless nonsense, to find any help on Adobe (Price per share, $36.37 as of 12.07, "Have I resolved all your issues?").
Any idea as to what's going on? It was on another computer...I may be able to do a Firewire move of the software...if I can relaunch, but I think I removed it from the other computer already. I ran disk utility, as suggested on another forum where I trolled for about an hour.

I have 2 Imacs, both running OS 10.9.3. The run on a simple office ethernet wired network. We have had no problems until yesterday when suddenly one of the Imacs (Imac A) disappeared from the network. Imac A could see Imac B but not the other way round. Imac A connected to Imac BÂ but was denied access to all the folders under the user directory on Imac B. The folders all have the no entry icon on them and if I try to open them I get the message "can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents" . I have checked that the sharing set up on both machines allows access read and write on items and we have been successfully sharing files for months.Â
I have hooked up an old Mac Pro running 10.8.6. to the network. It can see both the Imacs but when I transferred files from that machine to Imac B I got the message "can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents". I've checked and the permissions on this folder are set for all to read and write.Â
So far I have checked and repaired privileges using disk first aid.Â
The Imacs are both 3.1ghz Quad core i5 running 10.9.3.

Today I turned on my iMac and an access denied symbol show up at the loading screen. After waiting a while, it changed into a folder with an iterrogation in the middle of it and it starts to twinkle. I really don't know whats going on. Yesterday I turned off the iMac as normally and I didn't add/remove any programs or made a change on my settings.

My imac became very slow all of a sudden (stalls when clicking and typing), 2-3 mths after Lion (not sure it's related), mount_hfs and syslogd taking up 80-99% of CPU in Activity Monitor. After digging online, checked my Console and found repeating messages exceeding 20,000+++. But I'm not sure what is being repeated (sample below).I've already turned off Time Machine.I was able to delete the syslogd activity, but still left with 99% mount_hfs, which 'maybe' related to the 20,000+++ repeated messages. Not sure if it's relevant...but I was digging through my asl folder, and it is up to 10g for a single date for some reason! In Mac OS 10.6, the Console.app had an option to show the "Console Log" which included what looks like the stdout/stderr message of running applications not explicitly sent to syslog. The option showed up as the second option in the system log queries/database queries list on the Log List.In 10.7, the only option is "All Messages" and there does not appear to be a way to view the "console log" as it was in 10.6. Is there a way to turn this on in 10.7? Does the Mac no longer provide a way to see the stdout/stderr messages for running applications (those run as .app and not from terminal)?see attached screen shots (left is 10.6/right is 10.7) with console messages option missing.

I was using a program which opened my console and then I noticed in my console had messages referring to a couple of programs I removed a long time ago by dragging them to the Trash. It seems to be reporting thousands of messages every minute for one of the programs with the message "User or app not found." recurring.
This must be using resources, is there any way to stop this?

I have an 8 Core Mac Pro running 10.5.6. I have four internal drives and I want to use one of those for windows vista business 64bit. I also have a esata card as well as an atto ul5d scsi card. I followed the bootcamp instructions, created one windows partition one of my empty drives, follow boot camp instructions and put in the windows vista business 64bit disc, then clicked "start installation". After the computer reboots, some type comes up says it's scanning the atto ul5d and can't find the bios driver, then the screen goes black for a few moments, then "not bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key". But I have the windows vista business 64bit disc in the dvd drive and pressing any of the keys do nothing, almost like it doesn't recognize the keyboard? I also tried to do a boot camp partition on one of the drives that has my apple OS, and till same result. Besides the 4 internal drives I also have a third part esata card as well as a sci card, and the dvd drive that is in hear is not the stock dvd drive.

I see the numbers of everything from Core 2 Duo, to the slightly faster and cooler Core i3, to the supposedly faster core i5s and i7s. The benchmarks go up accordingly, but I found this does not always equate in a faster experience on most tasks.
Here's my experience so far on processor upgrade:
In one computer trade school re-certification class I am in, we are working with Windows Server 2003 on a Quad Xeon platform and it's incredibly slow.
But in a previous class we had the previous generation server edition on older Xeons, and while not fast, it was much better. On paper the newer multi-core Xeons should have made a difference, but could 2003 server software be that much more bloated than the previous Windows server edition that it would stall like that and make us wish we had the older setup?
I am going to try out the Adobe CS lab and put the new high end Dells to the test there and see if they work better than when we had an older CS version on older Xeon equipped Dells.
I don't know if this is something to do with Dell, or if Apple's increasing processor bumps/generations are going to similarly not make a difference in the speed things appear to go at, whether it's Adobe stuff, server stuff, or anything else that needs power.
I know somebody who plans on a Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7 MBP and I was wondering if the higher end processor is worth it in that case (iMovie being the main program of use).

Just curious as to how much of an improvement in performance I would see upgrading my system as it states above, since my 2006 machine is 3 years old and getting close to the end of my apple care, figured I would trade it in and upgrade.

Should I go for it? There's no advantage to having two cores in two sockets versus having four cores in one socket, right?

So the older Mac Pro's from 2008 have 2 2.8ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon processors, without hyperthreading, for a total of 8 cores, and the top of the line iMac has a Quar Core i7 2,8ghz with hyperthreading for a total of 8 (virtual) cores.
With the ghz being the same but less "real" cores, but probably newer CPU architecture, which CPU will actually be faster?
