OS X :: Opened The Console.app - How To Turn Back The Empty Logs?
Feb 12, 2009A while ago I opened the console.app. I was trying to empty out some logs. It now turns out that in the process I turned off logging. I normally use geektool to monitor the computer logs console.log and system.log but they are now both empty. Can anyone tell me how to turn them back on?

Jun 8, 2010I'm trying to get Prey anti theft working on my macbook. It runs manual and the site says it checks out but a test run didn't seem to work. So I checked console and found: com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10a740.cron[2330]) Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access Then as I go poking thru console for further clues I notice that I'm denied access to certain logs. Even normal stuff like Itunes crash and such. I'm logged in as admin and I don't recall ever noticing this on my old imac running Panther. This one is running Leopard 10.5.8 and I'm still pretty new to it. Am I missing something here? Why am I denied access? I know it protects certain core systems but console logs?

Mar 17, 2012In Mac OS 10.6, the Console.app had an option to show the "Console Log" which included what looks like the stdout/stderr message of running applications not explicitly sent to syslog. The option showed up as the second option in the system log queries/database queries list on the Log List.In 10.7, the only option is "All Messages" and there does not appear to be a way to view the "console log" as it was in 10.6. Is there a way to turn this on in 10.7? Does the Mac no longer provide a way to see the stdout/stderr messages for running applications (those run as .app and not from terminal)?see attached screen shots (left is 10.6/right is 10.7) with console messages option missing.

Apr 18, 2009Any ideas as to why my iMac wants to log off constantly. I have it password protected to wake up (purely to keep my kids off) but no other power saver features activated.Whenever I walk away for any period of time, it has tried to log out and may have stalled due to the fact that I've left Safari open or the like, but otherwise logs off completely.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Automatically Logs Into Guest Account?
Jun 22, 2012My Macbook pro with retina display automatically logs into the guest account since my sister used it once. Booting in safe mode gives me the option to choose what account and I've tried changing the settings to disable guest account and to automatically log into my account but nothing works, whatever combo of options i choose it logs into guest account!

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Can't Log In At Console With Any ID
May 10, 2012So I picked up a client two months ago with a mac server (10.6.8). It had been sitting there un-used for 9 months.I created the network and configured services and users, in particular VPN. I got it all set up at the beginning of April. Mid-April I tested VPN again just to make sure it was working (it was).Hadn't heard from them until today when they could not log into the CONSOLE. Not the app or whatnot, but the console.It shakes like a wrong password with the administrator user and does nothing with other users.(all UID/PWD were correct)I was not able to VPN either but after a while I was able to once and saw the symptoms myself via VNC.(I lost the VPN session and was no longer able to VPN back in???)
I am able to SSH into the server with a user ID and SU to administrator (not able to ssh as administrator directly???).I checked the update history and it has not had any updates since my work in April, nor is the command line update tool reporting any new updates available.It has been running 10.6.8 since last year (again, just sitting there).I checked the servermgrd is loaded.I read another dissucsion that says the resolution to the problem is upgrade the OS to 10.7.3 or newer? And isn't that a paid upgrade?(seems fishy at best if that is the case).I don't see an OS update when I check system updates.

Jan 11, 2011I was using a program which opened my console and then I noticed in my console had messages referring to a couple of programs I removed a long time ago by dragging them to the Trash. It seems to be reporting thousands of messages every minute for one of the programs with the message "User or app not found." recurring.
This must be using resources, is there any way to stop this?

May 16, 2012I just updated my laptop to the 10.7.4 and now every 5 seconds there is this message in Console:

I am trying to connect from my macbook pro to iMac by using remote management with allow access for All Users but cannot get to connect from MBP to iMac. I can connect without problems from iMac to MBP. The macbook pro just sits trying to connect.
I check the log on the iMac and see the new entry appear during connect attempt of:

Firewall turned off on both machines. I have created a new user on the Macbook to see if that could be the solution but still same occurrence.

Jun 4, 2012My imac became very slow all of a sudden (stalls when clicking and typing), 2-3 mths after Lion (not sure it's related), mount_hfs and syslogd taking up 80-99% of CPU in Activity Monitor.After digging online, checked my Console and found repeating messages exceeding 20,000+++. But I'm not sure what is being repeated (sample below).I've already turned off Time Machine.I was able to delete the syslogd activity, but still left with 99% mount_hfs, which 'maybe' related to the 20,000+++ repeated messages.Not sure if it's relevant...but I was digging through my asl folder, and it is up to 10g for a single date for some reason! Dec 20, 2010I�m a newbie here but been using Mac os x for about 10 years. My iBook 12" G4 1.33 has been crashing alot with the black screen saying "you need to restart your computer".or, more often "Welcome to Open Firmware, the system time and date is:.... When i type "mac-boot" it flashes once and goes to an all blue screen with a folder in the center with a question mark on it. One more detail: on the very top of the firmware screen it says: Illegal instruction at %SRR0: ff85e778 %SRR1: 0008 1000
This has been happening for over a year now and we usually get it to start by pressing random keys and even shaking the laptop!! We have learnt there is a real issue with the airport card in these ibook g4�s but mine is the type you can�t get to the airport card without taking the whole thing apart. So its still in there but we dont use it because it brings on these kernel panics, But they continue and are getting worse, I have reset the PRam 100�s of times thru the Open Firmware but nothing changes, Don�t know how to boot through the cd drive as there�s no prompts, everything is backed up, so not too scared but just want my lovely Mac back. I have the discs if anyone can tell me how to use them in this situation, or help in anyway I would be soooo grateful. The forums seem to have a fairbit about thi kind of thing but none of the responses work for us

May 25, 2009well my computer has been crashing a lot recently (i noticed it seems to be mostly while safari and itunes are running at the same time but i have no idea if this is the cause of the problem or just a coincidence). I read one thing that told me to check my system logs, so i did and the only thing that i found weird that was around the time i crashed was this, but i have no idea what it means.

PowerPC :: Powerbook Fans Are Constantly On - Makes Alot Of Noise
Oct 18, 2007My fans are constantly going on my g4 powerbook and the noise drives me nuts. I do all sorts of work - graphics (CS2), music recording, multimedia... but even when I am just not doing anything intensive the fans are on.
The fans are at full speed now and the temp reads 37C / 98F. I've used an icurve since I got the machine.I've put up with this noisy sound for a couple years now. One person said I need to clean the air vents, like dust is causing the noise. Does anyone know about this?

MacBook :: Screen Brightness Changes Automatically / Happens Alot In Dark Room
Aug 23, 2009I got a fairly new macbook 13, the last model before the firewire. I notice something very weird. The screen brightness changes. At first I thought I am imagining or maybe its like LCD's where color and brightness changes from one angle to the other but that is not the case...
If i come closer to the screen it takes a bit then it lowers the brightness, if I go further it does the opposite. If I adjust the screen it happens too, and I notice it happens a lot more if I am sitting in a darker room that a bright room.
I can almost swear the isight it doing some adjusting by its own calculating my distance from the screen. These are LEDs I believe. Any one heard of such a thing? What is this? Sometimes to happens while I am reading an article without moving.

Jul 28, 2009I'm running 10.5.7 and have a parental controlled account where I control what applications can be run. The internet isn't restricted, but it is supposed to log what websites have been visited. The problem is, nothing is being logged. There are sites that show up in Safaris history, but nothing shows up in the parental control logs. I was on the phone for over an hour with Apple, and they don't know what is going on. They said they would send the problem to the engineering department and they would get back to me in 3-5 days. The logging worked at one time. Does anybody know what could be going on, or how to fix it, or how to keep it from happening anymore.
