Oct 28, 2010Alright so someone needed the errors for a program, and I noticed there were several other errors for programs that are no longer on my mac. Is there any way to figure out how to make my mac stop looking for these things to rid the errors from Console?

Jul 23, 2010It appears as if my wife's Mac was hacked last weekend. I am not a nubie to computers but am not so familiar with security fr a Mac. I am trying to see if the Whole Foods website is the cause of this hack. Below explains what happened. On Sat 7/17/10, at about 11:30am we began getting telephone calls that my wife's TWO separate email accounts (one Yahoo and one Hotmail) had sent out an email that we had made a "surprise" visit to London and had been attacked and robbed etc and the email asked for money. A second email was sent a half an hour later asking for money to be wired to a Western Union reference number. Upon checking my wife's Yahoo account from a different computer than my wife's Macbook, I found the account password had been changed. After notifying Yhaoo that her account had been compromised, I learned that her Hotmail account had also been sending emails as well. The passwords are different for each of the accounts. Rebooting the machine after finding out of these emails took an unusually long time. Clearly something was amiss. As we later found out, the Yahoo account, my wife's primary account, had been setup to forward all her mail to forward.forward@hotmail.com the "bad guy's" drop account to collect her email. Her Hotmail account had not been setup to do this though. The culprit must have been her Mac Mail program on her Macbook-- only this has the capability to retrieve both accounts. No other computer has this capability. The passwords for both accounts were saved on the Macbook. My wife had no security in place-- admin p'word was blank, no firewall etc. This has been changed. What log file in the Console can I look at to see what went on during the time that I think a compromise took place? I have since loaded IAntivirus (free)on her machine.
How can I ensure that nothing has been loaded onto her machine that will give someone a backdoor into our network or her machine. Could a keystroke logger have been loaded as well, maybe a backdoor port? How can I see what programs have been loaded? My wife uses the latest version of Firefox at all times. The newest version downloaded this week, so she was using the prior, most up to date version at the time I think an attack occurred. Ditto for the OS. I have thought about a localized attack-- one that occurs when someone is within physical proximity of the laptop, but we live in a suburb and she rarely takes the laptop out of the house.

I googled it and it seem that something is missing from my OS, since the .jar file has been "compiled" with something that I don't have (??). Software update is ok, and on the terminal (don't ask me how I arrived there):

Jun 8, 2010I'm trying to get Prey anti theft working on my macbook. It runs manual and the site says it checks out but a test run didn't seem to work. So I checked console and found: com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10a740.cron[2330]) Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access Then as I go poking thru console for further clues I notice that I'm denied access to certain logs. Even normal stuff like Itunes crash and such. I'm logged in as admin and I don't recall ever noticing this on my old imac running Panther. This one is running Leopard 10.5.8 and I'm still pretty new to it. Am I missing something here? Why am I denied access? I know it protects certain core systems but console logs?

Jun 4, 2012My imac became very slow all of a sudden (stalls when clicking and typing), 2-3 mths after Lion (not sure it's related), mount_hfs and syslogd taking up 80-99% of CPU in Activity Monitor.After digging online, checked my Console and found repeating messages exceeding 20,000+++. But I'm not sure what is being repeated (sample below).I've already turned off Time Machine.I was able to delete the syslogd activity, but still left with 99% mount_hfs, which 'maybe' related to the 20,000+++ repeated messages.Not sure if it's relevant...but I was digging through my asl folder, and it is up to 10g for a single date for some reason! Jun 9, 2008I've just noticed that in my Finder window sidebar, under "Shared", I have a character called Thomson listed. I don't know any Thomson and I bought the machine, an MBA, brand new. However, I did have an engineer instal the machine in my apartment and can only assume he's the mysterious Thomson. Anyway, whoever he/she is, I don't want him/her on my machine as Shared & "connected as guest". The point is, I cannot find a way to delete Thomson!! Can anyone help? I've tried System Preferences>Security and Accounts and there's no trace of Thomson there. Right clicking on Thomson in the sidebar of Finder only gives me the option to Open and Get Info. Most annoying, this. There MUST be a way to delete a Sharing but totally unwanted guest....

Mar 17, 2012In Mac OS 10.6, the Console.app had an option to show the "Console Log" which included what looks like the stdout/stderr message of running applications not explicitly sent to syslog. The option showed up as the second option in the system log queries/database queries list on the Log List.In 10.7, the only option is "All Messages" and there does not appear to be a way to view the "console log" as it was in 10.6. Is there a way to turn this on in 10.7? Does the Mac no longer provide a way to see the stdout/stderr messages for running applications (those run as .app and not from terminal)?see attached screen shots (left is 10.6/right is 10.7) with console messages option missing.

OS X :: Stopping Console Messages/Deleted Apps Creating Console Messages?
Jan 11, 2011I was using a program which opened my console and then I noticed in my console had messages referring to a couple of programs I removed a long time ago by dragging them to the Trash. It seems to be reporting thousands of messages every minute for one of the programs with the message "User or app not found." recurring.
This must be using resources, is there any way to stop this?

Jan 19, 2009I was wondering if there is a small file size limit to the FAT32 file system. I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.
Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?
PowerPC :: Unable To Start System After Update / File System Got Corrupted?
Jul 19, 2007I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....

I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

MacBook Pro :: Putting The Full File System On A SSD?
May 4, 2012I'm thinking about getting a macbook pro with an SSD (and I know the refresh is just around the corner, but for business reasons,this money has to be spent now).  It seems most people put the OS and apps on the SSD, and keep a hard drive for all their data. If I could pare down my data suffiently, would it be reasonable to put the whole file system on an SSD? My worries is that the frequently-created files like various /tmp files would significantly reduce the life of the SSD, even if I have TRIM support.(I'm thinking about getting one of the OWC Mercury Extreme SSDs, for what it's worth.)

Basically i want to copy system files only (using CarbonCopyCloner) to ssd and leave the rest of my data (music, films etc) on hdd.Â
I started with installing a blank system to my new ssd. Then Im about to copy all folders from my current HDD, excluding some big ones that I want to store on hdd.Â
So my question is: am I doing it right? Won't any hidden files be missing after this kind of migration?

Applications :: How Do I Remove Parallels File Associations
Oct 16, 2010Two days ago I backed up my MBP with Super Duper and then did a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Installed VMware Fusion.
Installed my Mac applications including Unison. All of the RAR files are associated with XP on Parallels!
The only thing I can think of is that I had Parallels installed on my computer before and somehow when I had my Super Duper drive attached to my new install it picked up something from that?
How do I get rid of all this stuff? How do I set certain things like .exe fies to unknown (or at the very least Fusion)?
OS X :: Resize DMG File To Remove Empty Space?
Jul 16, 2009I made an image of a partition on my hard drive. The partition takes up 8gb but the actual content in it is below 4gb, the rest is just empty space. The image, no matter what I do or how I do it, keeps turning out to be 8gb as well, and then when I mount it, it has more than 4gb of empty space. How do I shrink the disc image to remove the empty space?! Nothing seems to be working. I tried hdiutil resize in an attempt to resize the dmg to 4gb, and it returned an error saying that is below the minimum size...? I also tried hdiutil compact and it returned an error saying Function not implemented. Is there anything I can do in order to shrink this dmg to delete all the useless space? It's important, because I need to burn it to a DVD.
