MacBook :: Why Will The Volume Only Work If Headphones Are Plugged In

The volume for my MacBook will only work if my headphones are plugged in. I've tried just about everything I could think of to fix the problem but it's still not working. I've tried blowing it out, wiggling the headphone jack, checking the sound settings from the system preferences. I've come to the conclusion that there is a problem with the sensor, but I wanted to find out if there is anything else I could try before taking it somewhere to get repaired.

MacBook Pro :: Lost Volume Control When Headphones Are Plugged In?
When I first bought my MBP (January 2012) I had this problem; plug in headphones, and I lose the ability to control the volume using the keyboard controls.Over the phone, Apple had me do a PRAM reset. After that it only happened sometimes, with a regular reboot solving the problem. It happened again today. I did a PRAM reset again because I'm sick to death of the little ******** issues I have with this MBP. (I've brought it into an Apple store, they kept it for a week and said nothing was wrong with it.)

The PRAM reset got it working ... then I plugged in the headphones. They still worked while they were plugged in, but when I unplugged them. Gone.BUT, not only are they gone for the MBP's speakers, they're gone for the headphone as well this time. AND, not only are the keyboard volume controls not working now, but the little volume slider at the top of my desktop isn't working either. I did a regular roboot, it solved it, until I plugged in my headphones.  But it gets better, the keyboard buttons work if I'm using my headphones and listening to something on YouTube, but they don't work if I'm listening to iTunes. And that's only the headphones, MBP speakers non-responsive in either case.

I do get the little pop-up interface that shows you the volume going up and down or if it's muted, it even gives me that little chime everytime I click the buttons, it's just not doing anything except looking pretty. I can control the volume either by using the volume slider in iTunes (or whatever application), as well as by going to System Prefrences, clicking on Sounds, and controlling it using the Output Volume slider.

IMac Intel :: Volume Controll Not Working When Speakers And Headphones Plugged In?
When my external speakers or headphones are plugged into the back of my iMac, the volume control won't work. A "no sound" icon appears and the volume slider will not move. When I unplug speakers or headphones everything goes back to normal. All updates are current. My "Audio MIDI Setup" says, "Audio Output....Output Not Supported." Repairing disc permissions was run too.

MacBook Pro :: Why Won't Audio Work With Headphones Plugged In
I've had my mac for a couple months short of a year. A few weeks ago, I needed to record a quick idea for a melody my guitarist and I had. I was aware that the I/O jack were one and the same in the 2011 MBP model, so I changed my settings to allow me to use it as an input jack. No problem. The problem, though, is that I can't use it as an output jack anymore. Audio plays fine through the built in speakers but turns into static when I change the I/O setting to output and plug my headphones in.

MacBook Pro :: External Headphones Not Working Unless Plugged In At Boot Up?
I have a MBP 1st gen unibody running 10.5.7. However in last few days my headphones are not working when i plug them in. When i got into system pref-sound it still shows as internal speakers... this is where it goes weird tho: If i boot the machine up with the headphones in, they work fine and system prefs show them as headphones. But as soon as i unplug them and plug them back in, the machine doesn't recognize them anymore.

MacBook Pro :: Plugging In Headphones Causes Volume To Go Up
I just recently purchased a 2.8 GHz 15" MacBook Pro and it has been great except for when I plug in my headphones. When I plug in my headphones the volume goes several bars louder for some reason. I usually keep my volume pretty low about 2-3 bars but putting in a headphone it would jump to about 6 bars. I have to turn it down every time so the problem is consistent. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere or is this a known problem? I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.1 with all other recent updates.

MacBook Pro :: Volume Control Only Works With Headphones?
When my headphones are plugged in I can use the volume control keys on the keyboard to adjust the volume just fine. But when I unplug my headphones the volume display goes dim, my volume control keys no longer work, and my speakers will not play sound.

The problem started last week. The computer has never been dropped and I won't even bring liquid near it so I know neither of those caused this.

Has anyone else had this problem?

IMac :: Headphones Plugged In But Not Detected
I have a ~year old 24" iMac (2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo) that I just suddenly started having a problem with. I use headphones pretty regularly and they are almost always plugged into the headphone jack. Recently, I lent my headphones to someone and, when I plugged them back in, the machine doesn't detect them. The audio works just fine coming out of the internal speakers, it's just that it *always* comes out of the internal speakers, no matter if the headphones are plugged in or not.

I took a look at the Sound Preferences panel and, sure enough, it doesn't detect the headphones as plugged in (just the internal speakers). Does anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting? I'm not sure it matters, but I did just recently upgraded to 10.5.6. The headphones worked after the upgrade, but it may be that this is the first time they were *re*plugged in after the upgrade.

MacBook Pro :: Setting Initial Volume Level For Headphones?
The volume level for the built-in speakers is remembered across boots, but it is not remembered for headphones.

I.e. Whenever I plug in the headphones after a boot, the volume level sets itself to 50% - too loud for my ears and possibly damaging to the headphones.

Anybody know of a way to change this behavior? - To set an initial volume level for headphones?

I have OSX 10.5.6.

OS X Leopard :: Volume Settings Not Retained For Headphones / Speakers
I have been having a problem with my Mac Book from the start. According to what I have read on the Internet my Intel based Mac Book should retain volume settings separately for my headphones and my internal speakers. Meaning that once I have changed the settings for the volumes it should set the correct volume if I connect my headphones or use my internal speakers. This does happen and work normally. However after restarting my Mac Book volume settings are not retained and once I connect my headphones the volume is set to 56%. Similarly this happens for my internal speakers as well. This also describes my problem [URL]. I have already reset my PRAM and NVRAM So the option described on this page does not work for me. [URL]

MacBook Pro :: Microphone Will Not Work When Plugged Directly Into Line-in Jack
I am trying to get a Sony ECM-DS70P Condenser Stereo Microphone with a 3.5mm stereo male plug to work on my MacBook Pro with a Behringer UCA222 USB Audio Interface and I am having no joy at all.The Microphone will not work when plugged directly into the Line-in jack on the MacBook Pro because the Audio Line-In input on the MacBook is line level -10dB to+4dB and microphones are generally around -40dB. So, I need either a line level preamp or a usb audio interface.I decided on a USB Audio Interface (Behringer UCA222).The Microphone is plugged into a 3.5mm stereo to RCA L & R cable which is plugged into the L/R RCA inputs on the Behringer UCA222. The Behringer UCA222's USB Cable is plugged into a USB port on the MacBook Pro.

On the Macbook Pro in System Preferences > Sound > the output is set to Internal Speakers and the input is set to the USB Codec (Which showed up when the Behringer UCA222 was plugged in). [code]

OS X :: Flash Drive Will Not Work When Plugged Into PC
I have/had a 16 GB Kingston Data Traveler flash drive with all of my work files on it. I travel a lot for work and I was just in Italy for 2 weeks. Anyway, I went to an internet cafe to print a document before a meeting. 20 minutes before I went to this place the drive worked fine. I got to the place, and it seemed to me that the guy didn't know what he was doing. He had machines running on XP and they were extremely slow, and he just kept clicking away. He finally turned to me and said that his machine wouldn't read my drive. I blanched and tried putting it back into my Macbook and felt sick when I saw that the drive was no longer recognizable on my Mac either.

I had backed up almost everything on the server before I left for Italy, and I had emailed most of the new documents I had created while away from the office. Unluckily, there was one folder of documents that I hadn't backed up on the server because there wasn't enough space there (grrr), so I had left them on the drive. A few lessons I learned:
-back up on the desktop or hard drive as well while traveling
-bring the portable printer next time
-don't let someone mess with my jump drive

Should I reformat the drive and attempt to use it again, or should I buy a new one that is a better brand? I definitely don't want a repeat of this. This is the first time I've ever had a problem like this--all the other drives I've ever used, from expensive to cheapies, all worked fine. Is there any way to recover any of these files or should I just accept that they're gone? My guess that being an internet cafe with PCs, the computers were full of viruses and the drive became infected corrupted. When I try to repair it or verify it, I get an error message.
