MacBook Pro :: The Sound Doesn't Work - Volume Is Muted And Can't Unmute

The volume is muted, but I can't un-mute it because I am unable to click on any of the sound options because they are all "grayed out". The little box next to mute is checked and I cannot un-check it because it's grayed out. Nothing works when I plug in headphones or speakers or anything, and there is no red light glowing where you plug the headphones or speakers in.

OS X :: Volume Doesn't Work?
Today I tried to watch a video on my computer, and there was no sound. So I clicked the volume up button, and it doesn't change the level (there's a small "no" sign, the circle with the line through it, under where the volume level should be). In the menu bar, the volume control is now a light grey and I can't use it. Same with in system preferences. Any ideas on how to get volume to start working again or why it stopped?

MacBook Pro :: Safari4.0 Doesn't Work - Shuts Down - Ichat Can't Work
I told myself not to do it. Don't update the Safari software to 4.0, you know how they always mess up these things. And yet, per accident I did. Of course Safari 4.0 doesn't work. Every time I open it, it shuts down. iChat also doesn't work anymore, and even the Dashboard shuts down every now and then. In addition, the computer feels incredibly slow. I can't download rapidshare links on iGetter anymore and everything just feels wrong. Countless threads have been opened on this matter with a variety of different problems for different people. Yet I have not read a proper solution. I have seen all kinds of technical solutions being offered but I'm not a computer wiz and I do not know the terms they use. I just want to go back to Safari 3.2 or at least the one before the 4.0 But I read that deleting Safari 4 and reinstalling 3.2 won't work because of a certain webkit that got installed with it, making it impossible to go back.

Power Mac G5 :: Volume Control Doesn't Work Since Upgrading To 10.5
Ever since I upgraded to OS 10.5 (right now it's 10.5.4) on my G5 (dual 2.5) the volume control from my keyboard has stopped working. I actually don't think it's the keyboard though. Whenever I hit any of the three controls (volume up, volume down, or mute) the volume display appears on my screen showing the volume all the way up and it does not allow me to lower it or mute it. It is just stuck at the highest. It shows the "no smoking" symbol showing that I cannot change the volume. Has anybody else seen this or had this issue?

OS X :: Youtube Videos Volume Bar Doesn't Work With Firefox Sometimes?
i'm having this minor but annoying problem with Firefox. every now any then when I move my mouse over the volume button while I'm watching a Youtube video in order to get the volume bar to pop up, nothing happens. if i click repeatedly on the button and go crazy it will pop up, but it will not let me slide the volume bar up and down. i don't remember having this problem with Safari. it's sort of like the browser isn't recognizing my mouse cursor hovering over the volume area in order for it to trigger the bar to pop up, if that makes any sense.

IMac Intel :: Wireless Keyboard Volume Control Key Doesn't Work?
I replaced a wireless keyboard for my year old iMac today, and just noticed tonight that when I try to adjust the volume UP, it sends me to widgets, and when I try to adjust the volume DOWN, it dims the desktop behind my open window.

I've tried checking, and unchecking, the box in Preferences>Keyboard>Use all F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys. Doesn't seem to change anything.

How do I get my volume keys back?

IMac Intel :: Sound Doesn't Work
My family's iMac is suddenly having problems with sound. In fact, from one day to the next there is no sound at all. When I try to use the increase/decrease volume keys, I get a little circle with a line through it and nothing happens. I have searched the forums and it seems other people are having similar problems, but there is no solution. I have tried restarting, repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM. Zapping the PRAM worked once to restore sound, but now that won't even work.I have heard some people suggest maybe it's a loose connection, but that seems improbable, given that I was temporarily able to restore the sound by zapping the PRAM. My guess is that it is a software issue, perhaps created by one of the recent updates.

It is a 2.66 GHz iMac running system 10.5.8.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: IMac Sound Doesn't Work After Upgrade?
I have an Intel-based iMac which I just upgraded two days ago from Snow Leopard to Lion (10.7.4).  I did an upgrade-in-place (as opposed to a fresh install) and did a software update after the installation completed.  I have my computer scheduled to wake up each morning at 6 a.m.  When it wakes up, the sound doesn't work unless I reboot the computer.  If I open up iTunes and try to play music, there is no sound (unless I reboot).  The song progress meter at the top of iTunes won't even move when I hit the play button.  When I open the Sound preference and click the Output tab, I do see the Headphone port and the output volume is set all the way up.

MacBook Pro :: Sound Muted But On Startup System Always Chimes
I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro with a 250Gb Apple SSD TS256C.Since last Autumn, after a problem that saw the SSD replaced by Apple and me needing to migrate my profile across from an older Macbook, every time the system shuts down it forgets my sound settings. So no matter how I set the sound before powering down it always chimes on start up.It's entirely possible that this may be a problem from the migration, but I don't know how to rectify the issue.

OS X Leopard :: Doesn't Boot (Kernel Panic), Even CD/DVD Doesn't Work Anymore?
It is a very long story how I came to the point I am at right now, so I'll try to keep it really short:My MPR stops booting and shows that Kernel Panic message (30s after starting the boot procedure with the grey screen and Apple logo), telling me to reboot. It even does not boot from CD/DVD anymore. Zapping PRAM doesn't help. Booting into Safe Mode doesnt work. Booting into Single User Mode and repairing the drive (/sbin/fsck -fy) did help a couple of times; scanning the system with Onyx and removing faulty preferences even helped a lot as well, everything seemed to work fine. But after the next system crash (happened during memtest procedure), I had the same problem again, this time even Single User Mode doesnt help. Booting from external FW-drive doesnt work. Every time: Kernel Panic.

Since I put in 4GB RAM four weeks ago (without any problems until last week), I replaced the new RAM with the old RAM. Still: Kernel Panic.How I ran into the whole trouble? I replaced the original internal drive with a new 500GB WD drive. Now problems, until I accidently wiped the whole drive with BootCamp assistant.

At some point, I managed to boot from CD/DVD and (deep-)clean / format the whole internal disk, reinstalled 10.5.4, imported the settings and software from my old internal disk, and maybe f***ed everything up again by doing so. ONYX helped me to isolate a couple of preferences that went bad after that import, and after deleting them, everything seemed to be alright, especially after updating to 10.5.6. Until the system crashed next time, during a memtest. Memory seems to be ok though; as I already said, swapping it against the old RAM doesnt change anything, and TechTool didnt find anything. HD seems to be ok as well, neither Disk Utility nor ONYX nor TechTool did find any hardware fault.

After every crash so far, pcscd.pub was corrupted, with 17 instead of 16 blocks (Single User Mode fsck -fy fixed that), which is more than strange since I don't use any smart card stuff which that file is used for.

Now, even fixing that file doesnt help anymore.Verbose mode shows that the boot process stops right after eb 15 18:00:43 localhost /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow57: Login Window Application Started -- Threaded authFeb 15 18:0046 localhost mDNSResponder-176.3 (Sep 30 2008 16:59:38)56: startingAirPort: Link Down on en1

It could be interesting to put back in the old internal drive, but I'd like to avoid that at almost any cost since putting back the cases lid was such a p. i. t. a. It doesnt seem to be necessary as the drive itself seems to be ok technically.The thing that amazes me most is the fact that I can't boot neither from CD/DVD nor from external FW-drive(s) anymore.

Now I'm sitting here with a beautiful 2,5k$ brick and I'm wondering if anybody has a clue what I could do or who to ask (Apple Care won't be available before tomorrow).

MacBook Pro :: Doesn't Boot - Only Makes Sound Of Drive
My Macbook looked fine a couple hours ago. I did the permissions reparation today and kept working. I shut it down to go out, have dinner, and when I came back it doesn't start up. I press the power button and all it does is the sound of the DVD drive and nothing else, not even the start up chime. Not a single color on the screen, black as shut down. I already did reseted the SMC and the RAM, as described on the Apple support pages. Also tried to start from the installation disc and it did nothing and now the DVD is stuck inside the drive. What should I do?! Is there anything else to try before going to an Apple Store?
