IMac :: Headphones Plugged In But Not Detected
Jan 21, 2009
I have a ~year old 24" iMac (2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo) that I just suddenly started having a problem with. I use headphones pretty regularly and they are almost always plugged into the headphone jack. Recently, I lent my headphones to someone and, when I plugged them back in, the machine doesn't detect them. The audio works just fine coming out of the internal speakers, it's just that it *always* comes out of the internal speakers, no matter if the headphones are plugged in or not.
I took a look at the Sound Preferences panel and, sure enough, it doesn't detect the headphones as plugged in (just the internal speakers). Does anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting? I'm not sure it matters, but I did just recently upgraded to 10.5.6. The headphones worked after the upgrade, but it may be that this is the first time they were *re*plugged in after the upgrade.

Is there a way for me to leave a headphone extender cable plugged into the back of my iMac and have the external speakers play until I plug in headphones?

I'm currently using the 13 inch Macbook Pro with the latest software. I noticed just today that the built-in microphone that comes with the laptop will not work when I plug in my headphones. However, as soon as I remove them, they resume working.

I've had my mac for a couple months short of a year. A few weeks ago, I needed to record a quick idea for a melody my guitarist and I had. I was aware that the I/O jack were one and the same in the 2011 MBP model, so I changed my settings to allow me to use it as an input jack. No problem. The problem, though, is that I can't use it as an output jack anymore. Audio plays fine through the built in speakers but turns into static when I change the I/O setting to output and plug my headphones in.

My Macbook pro will not play sound unless I have headphones plugged in. When the headphones are plugged in, the sound comes out of the Macbook speakers only. How can I get it back to normal?

The volume for my MacBook will only work if my headphones are plugged in. I've tried just about everything I could think of to fix the problem but it's still not working. I've tried blowing it out, wiggling the headphone jack, checking the sound settings from the system preferences. I've come to the conclusion that there is a problem with the sensor, but I wanted to find out if there is anything else I could try before taking it somewhere to get repaired.

I've recently started using headphones more and more and something that really bothers me is that I can't change the output source to the Mac's speakers unless I unplug the headphones entirely. Is there a way to do this without unplugging the headphones? I've looked through Audio MIDI Setup Utility as well as the Sound system preferences but found nothing.

When I first bought my MBP (January 2012) I had this problem; plug in headphones, and I lose the ability to control the volume using the keyboard controls.Over the phone, Apple had me do a PRAM reset. After that it only happened sometimes, with a regular reboot solving the problem. It happened again today. I did a PRAM reset again because I'm sick to death of the little ******** issues I have with this MBP. (I've brought it into an Apple store, they kept it for a week and said nothing was wrong with it.)
The PRAM reset got it working ... then I plugged in the headphones. They still worked while they were plugged in, but when I unplugged them. Gone.BUT, not only are they gone for the MBP's speakers, they're gone for the headphone as well this time. AND, not only are the keyboard volume controls not working now, but the little volume slider at the top of my desktop isn't working either. I did a regular roboot, it solved it, until I plugged in my headphones. But it gets better, the keyboard buttons work if I'm using my headphones and listening to something on YouTube, but they don't work if I'm listening to iTunes. And that's only the headphones, MBP speakers non-responsive in either case.
I do get the little pop-up interface that shows you the volume going up and down or if it's muted, it even gives me that little chime everytime I click the buttons, it's just not doing anything except looking pretty. I can control the volume either by using the volume slider in iTunes (or whatever application), as well as by going to System Prefrences, clicking on Sounds, and controlling it using the Output Volume slider.

I have a situation with a new iMac where the external display, which is connected via mini display port --> DVI adapter, is being detected by the computer but not displaying anything. I have restarted the computer, changed through all of the resolutions and done just about everything else I can think of.

I have an imac G5 20" that is approximately two years old. About 2-3 weeks ago it started acting a bit flakey....it would lock up on std apps (firefox), it would always lock up after being revived from sleeping etc. I ran the hardware test and everything checked out. Then a few days ago it wouldn't boot. I get the chime, I hear the drive spinning, then the fans kick into high gear and I get a screen with a folder in the middle with a "question mark icon" and a "finder icon" displaying alternatively inside the folder. So I booted up the hardware test dvd and the test failed 27 seconds in with the following error code:
2GMC/2/15: built-in
Logic Board Error Detected
Are there any other steps I should be taking before taking in for service?

I have an iMac, early 2009 OS X 10.9.4. Up until a few months ago I didn't have a problem with my memory card reader. The computer no longer detects the memory card reader. There is no indication by the computer that the memory card read has been plugged in. I bought a new memory card reader (different brand). The computer does not detect the new memory card reader. I have tried rebooting the computer. That did not make a difference. I tried unplugging all the USB devices plugged into the computer. That did not work

I just plugged headphones into the headphone port on my iMac(dual core 2.4)
I went to system preferences, sound, then output and only the internal speakers show up.
I rebooted the machine and still, same thing.
edit:
I tried the same headphones on the eMac sitting next to it, and it worked just fine. Still confused about the iMac

With my iMac, I have Swan M10 external speakers that I love. I also like to use headphones sometimes.
My currrent solution for switching from speakers to headphones (or vice versa) involves physically turning the computer, disconnecting one input in the headphone jack, and putting in the other one.

I'm still in love with my iMac, now entering the phase where I have to fight with SWMBO* to get access to my main machine. I have plugged a pair of headphones in the iMac but I would like to be able to find a software solution that would let me switch between headphones and the internal speakers of the iMac (which are quite good actually!) Plugging / Unplugging is not really ideal and I swear I thought I could do this on my powerbook...

So my late 2009 iMac doesn't like headphones. When I have no headphones plugged in, I get the sound fine, and the output shows as internal speakers. But when I plug in headphones, the output shows as Digital Output. ***!!? The red light used to be there but only when the problem started, now it's gone. I've tried toothpick, Q Tip, everything. I think it's a hardware issue cause it does it on Snow Leopard, Mavericks, and even Yosemite. Since it's an '09 model my warranty is gone.

I use my MBP 15" (the new one), as my primary machine in my office. I sit by my best usually 10-12hrs a day working on it.
I am trying to figure out what is best to do, keep the AC plugged in or have it un-plugged and only plug it in when the battery is drained (or less then 50%)? I have tried different experiments, plugged in, not-plugged and time is about the same for life of the battery. The true question is, how is is best to do it for the health of the battery.

Might be a silly question:
I have an 8GB USB pen drive, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). I use it for backing up text documents (8GB goes a long way).
Is it ok to leave the drive permanently plugged into my iMac? I don't know what the life of these devices is supposed to be, so am I risking damage/failure by leaving it in?
My computer is pretty much awake 24/7.

When I plug it in, the computer makes a horrrible noise, and then when I press the power button, it flashes, and the noise becomes much louder. It origionally turned on to the hd selection screen when I first got it, and I accidentally left it on all day. When I got home, it was making the noise. I know it is not the hard drive, because it dieson't have one, and Imacs don't have fans.
