MacBook Pro :: Microphone Will Not Work When Plugged Directly Into Line-in Jack
Jan 31, 2012
I am trying to get a Sony ECM-DS70P Condenser Stereo Microphone with a 3.5mm stereo male plug to work on my MacBook Pro with a Behringer UCA222 USB Audio Interface and I am having no joy at all.The Microphone will not work when plugged directly into the Line-in jack on the MacBook Pro because the Audio Line-In input on the MacBook is line level -10dB to+4dB and microphones are generally around -40dB. So, I need either a line level preamp or a usb audio interface.I decided on a USB Audio Interface (Behringer UCA222).The Microphone is plugged into a 3.5mm stereo to RCA L & R cable which is plugged into the L/R RCA inputs on the Behringer UCA222. The Behringer UCA222's USB Cable is plugged into a USB port on the MacBook Pro.
On the Macbook Pro in System Preferences > Sound > the output is set to Internal Speakers and the input is set to the USB Codec (Which showed up when the Behringer UCA222 was plugged in). [code]

The speaker on the top of my screen is muted and I cannot get any sound out of the internal speakers. When I try to raise or lower the volume there is a circle with a line through it underneadth the speaker level window that pops up and everything seems frozen. I've checked online to find a solution and did see a red light in the headphone jack. So I plugged back in headphones and a USB and pulled out the headphones, the red light went off but I still see no option for internal speakers in my Sound preferences. What do I do? I'm trying to avoid a trip to the apple store...

so i bought my dad a web cam for christmas, its said it works with mac g4 so i thought everything would be fine but when he tried it today he found that the jack doesnt fit in the microphone port but it fitted perfectly in the head phone port. Also it fitted fine in the microphone port of his G3 but he doesnt use it so thats no help but what im trying to figure out is, have the ports changed size between the G3 and G4. and if so is there a adapter that i can buy? or is there a web cam that i can buy that will work with it?

I want to know if anyone can point out the advantages and disadvantages of using a line-in microphone (for the 1/8" analog jack) compared to a USB microphone for a Mac Pro. Do I need some kind of amplification for a head-set microphone with a 1/8 analog jack? I can't get mine to work, but I wonder if there's something I haven't selected correctly in my Preferences.

I'm looking for a command line utility (Audacity isn't scriptable as far as I know) to record from line-in or microphone to just raw audio (like .wav file). Does anyone know of any free tool that would do this?

I usually use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. I recently bought a time capsule and in trying to set it up i plugged the capsule into the ethernet jack and my ethernet cable stopped working. I connected my computer into the capsule and its not the cable thats broken. I'm currently lost on what to try next, when i connect my computer to the jack, it says "nothing is plugged in" or something like that.

I have this nifty device called a "Magic Jack" [URL] which turns any USB port on any internet-connected computer into a hard phone line.
I'm now behind a network at school, and it's not working properly.
Customer service says that I need to "open ports such and such, and forward them to my IP"... but they don't know how to do that with a mac.

I am just looking for a little help with my Early 08 white Macbook. It is running 10.6 just in case you were wondering. But the problem I am having is that I can not get a microphone to work on the damn thing. I have tried 2 different microphones on it, both in through the line in and I have tried line out too and neither of them worked. When I go into system preferences and hit sounds and go to line-in it says it dosn't pick anything up.

I have a Macbook Pro and something happened to the audio jack recently. Not sure what but I have a 3 year old and pc husband at home. Basically the inside of the jack went from being an inny - where you can plug in an audio plug, to an outie - where you can only insert about half of your plug and it won't go in any further. When I go into Sound settings - Output it says the selected device has no controls, and the speaker icon on my status bar is greyed out. I brought it in and they said they would need to replace the logic board in order to fix the jack - $1,000.... yikes.
So long story short I am wondering if it is just the audio jack then could I buy usb speakers and use those instead? Any work around at all? I wish there were a way to just tell the computer to ignore anything the audio jack was telling it, but I was told that is not an option either.

I've had a look on these forums and had a look on the web but I'm still confused by what I need to get to meet my external storage needs. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Background I'm going back to university next year to study animation so I've just ordered a Macbook Pro and I will be selling my '08 Mac Pro fairly soon to pay for it. I'm doing this because I need to be able to work from where ever. I know if I need to do any massive renders University has equipment I can use. What I am looking for Animation obviously takes up a lot of Hard Disk space so I need someway of storing, accessing and backing up all of my work that wont fit on my laptop. This is a basic summary of what I need it to do.
- Store old projects (that can be 100's of Gb)
- Easily backup MBP harddrive (500Gb) & old projects on other drives.
- Work directly on it on large animation projects.
- Be expandable in the future.
- Fairly easy to set up and use.
- Cheap is good but I'm happy to pay more if the benefits are obvious.
- Any extra bonuses are good (like working wirelessly, etc) but only if it's not loads extra.
I don't know if all these things are possible but be very grateful for any help regardless.

I can't get my microphone to work. On the system preferences> sound> input screen, I am "line-in", with volume up, and inserting the jack registers on the volume meter of little blue bars with a spike up, but no speech through the microphone is registering.

I have a late 2010 macbook air 11 inch. The battery condition is normal and about has 650 cycles. The light on my charger is green and my computer only stays on when the charger is plugged in. When I unplug it the computer just turns off and my battery says its not charging and that the power source is the adapter. Do I need a new one or is this fixable?

My good quality MXL mic won't work with my Mac mini. I've heard this is because Mac minis can't cope with microphones that aren't self-powered! How can that be? Surely the latest Mac Mini has enough umph to power a microphone? My old iMac has no problem seeing the mic. Have I missed a firmware upgrade or something that will enable the Mac mini to 'see' my mic?

I bought a used iMac from a seller on ebay. Everything works perfect, iSight camera is excellent. I tried recording a video and it worked, when I played it back it had no sound at all. I already tried going to system preferences and changing it to built-in microphone. I also reset the PRAM. I don't know what else to do!!
It has the version 10.6.8 installed, I don't know if that has anything to do with the mic not working.

I've had my mac for a couple months short of a year. A few weeks ago, I needed to record a quick idea for a melody my guitarist and I had. I was aware that the I/O jack were one and the same in the 2011 MBP model, so I changed my settings to allow me to use it as an input jack. No problem. The problem, though, is that I can't use it as an output jack anymore. Audio plays fine through the built in speakers but turns into static when I change the I/O setting to output and plug my headphones in.Â

The volume for my MacBook will only work if my headphones are plugged in. I've tried just about everything I could think of to fix the problem but it's still not working. I've tried blowing it out, wiggling the headphone jack, checking the sound settings from the system preferences. I've come to the conclusion that there is a problem with the sensor, but I wanted to find out if there is anything else I could try before taking it somewhere to get repaired.
