MacBook Pro :: Won't Load Past Login Screen - Rainbow Spinner
Sep 6, 2014
I Was having some trouble a few days ago with my computer running slow with basic tasks, would give me the rainbow spinner frequently. I have a feeling it might be because of some music I downloaded from a torrent website (?) so i decided to do a hard shut down a few days ago by holding the power button down and left it alone until today, where it asked me to log in and then had the pop up that said something like "your computer was shut down unexpectedly, would you like to open all the apps you had running" or something along those lines and I hit cancel instead of yes because i wanted the computer to start new with nothing open. Well after I hit cancel and logged in with my administrator password, it will not load my computer past the log in screen and just has me stuck on that screen with the rainbow spinner. Not sure what to do, I'm afraid of repeatedly doing hard shut downs. Not sure if I have a virus from the songs I downloaded but I don't think I'll be downloading anymore.

Bought a refurb from Apple and they don't send the install disk. Now can't get past the login screen. Thought I left the password blank but it won't let me get past the start up screen. Tried the install disk from my 15 inch mbp by holding C and starting up. but it only tells me I need to restart.

My computer wouldn't quit an application, so to shut it down I Pressed the power button until it turned off. I've tried To turn it on with cmd-v and it said <5% free audit space.I tried rebooting with cmd-s and it still hasn't worked.

How to get my computer to turn on? I used it on Friday and had a normal shut down but when I went to turn it on yesterday, it gets the the gray screen with the apple and the loading bar and loads half way and then just stops and sits there until it eventually shuts itself off. I have tried turning it off and then back on and holding the D key but nothing happened.

I have a the 1st generation Macbook Pro. It has been working fine up until last night it would not load the login screen. It would show a checkerboard screen at the login view and other times it would show the login screen all streched out wit the checkerboard on top of it. I have tried fsck-ing, removing the PRAM. I then booted in Safe Mode (which worked fine) and attempted to repair disk permissions through Disk Utility and it seemed like there were a lot of errors in the Java part. I attempted to boot up the Mac OS Install disk (Snow Leopard) but the same checkerboard screen from the login popped up.
(This is the image of the login screen when attempting to boot up normally.)

I recently tried to install OS X Yosemite. unfortunately during the install my laptop was unplugged and the installation failed mid way through. Each time I start my mac I get to login screen and after logging in get an error message and told to restart and try again - which does not resolve the issue. Guest login do work to the safari screen.
The error message reads: You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then Press the power button again.  Behind system code, including:Â

I run windows 7 and MacOSx on my Macbook pro. I use bootcamp to switch to Mac OSx. I never had prooblems over the last 12 months in switching between the two but recently when I try to boot OSx, the apple screen comes and stays there forever without going to the login screen. I have been having some problems with Windows lately as well with auto restarts.

My 24 inch iMac is not getting pass the apple logo. It acts like it's loading, but then the little progress spinner (not sure of the name) stops spinning after 2-3 minutes. It never wants to get pass that. I'm running the latest version of Lion.
Here's the specs:
3.06GHZ
4GB
500GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS
So far I've tried using disc utility on my snow leopard disc....it doesn't load. I've tried to start in safe mode...it loads about half way and stops. Oddly enough windows xp works in bootcamp. It runs okay besides when I try to move windows. I'm guessing it's the graphics card. No idea really. Here is a video I made to show you what I mean: [URL]. I've also tried installing a new 1TB HD and it still won't boot from a disc for some reason. I tried install snow leopard through the internal superdrive and with an external superdrive. No dice.

I have an iMac G3. The specs are: 600 MHz G3 /Graphite 1 GB RAM 40 GB HDD CD-RW Mac os x tiger 10.4 Here are the 2 problems with the screen/ crt: The problem with the screen is that it's not as good, as it used to be. I have another g3 imac (450 MHz Sage) and my dad pointed out that the sage imac's display is much more sharper then my 600 mhz graphite. And i had a look at at it and my dad was right. Also their are lines going down the sides of my screen (which you can barely notice on the sage imac) is their a way to fix this? Also another problem i have with the screen is that I am seeing rainbow affects on the screen. I read online that the anti-glare film/coating is scratched (but thats with different crt monitors eg sony 21" etc) Is their a way to fix that as well?

My Macbook has been running pretty slowly recently but only at log in. Its been taking ages to load my name at the top of if you try anything before is loaded my user profile I guess it just crashed. Also every now and again the wallpaper doesnt load up. Anyway to fix this is booted into safe-mode, verified the disk and repaired the permission. My work insists I use McAfee enterprise edition for Mac if connecting their servers so I am also protected from viruses and mal-ware. Its just got worse. And stranger still Safari still loads but thats all. Any other program will bounce a few times and then do nothing. Even mail, pages, dreamweaver, terminal, settings - everything. Safari is the only working program I have found that actually still loads. The internet connection works find and everything else. McAfee is sitting in my status bar so I am guessing that has also loaded properly.

I have a problem with my MacBook. Recently iphoto kept freezing whilst looking through pictures, then eventually crashed. Kept trying it over and over and it did the same thing. Then firefox started crashing too. Restarted my MacBook and I got to the log in page. Entered my password but it then froze on the blue screen. Tried booting in safe mode but it didn't get past that point either.

Okay well, to start off, I got my MacBook from a distant family member who got a new one so they let me have their old one. They got it from a pawn shop so I don't have the disk that we got the OS from but it hasn't had any issues UNTIL NOW. I need to use my laptop for a homework assignment. Everytime I turn it on it'll just stay on the loading screen, I left it for 4 hours yesterday and it still wouldn't work. I reset the (insert acronym here) thing already, the thing where you press control, option, P, R keys at start up. because my assignment is on the laptop and it's due tomorrow.

My Macbook Pro (2008) was upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 before I bought it used. It's always been slow and after a little while it won't boot up properly, it only gets as far as the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath.
I've have used Recovery HD and Disk Utility to repair/verify the hard drive and after the repair it still won't boot up past the apple logo. I downloaded OSX Lion 10.7.4 (client combo) update onto an external drive but I can't install the update when using Recovery HD. I've tried mounting the existing hard drive onto an external drive, but I get an error mesage immediately.
There are only a few folders I need to take from the existing hard drive in the Macbook Pro. What can I do to either access my hard drive or get it to boot up properly? I have a retail copy of a Snow Leopard DVD that I can use. I believe I might have saved Lion onto a DVD a while ago, but Apple seems to insist we intall by downloading the latest Lion? Basically I need to access the hard drive without erasing the data.

I hardly ever turn off my Macbook unless i need to - I just close it and use it whenever i need to. I let the battery run dry as Apple suggests to do every now and again, and turned it on the next day. It started to boot and took a little longer to get past the grey apple logo and loading circle and then froze on the blue screen. I can control the mouse, but every few seconds it changes to a darker blue, cursor disappears but returns after a second or two. I've tried:
- Booting into safe mode (Same thing happens)
- Booting from CD and repairing permissions (Said everything was ok, same thing happens when I booted)
- Single user mode (used some commands from an Apple page and restarted)
I can however boot into windows perfectly fine, which leads me to suspect it's a corrupt log in item. I'd like to know for sure it's not a hardware problem so I don't have to take it into an Apple Store.

first i'd like to give you a few pieces of information on what was going on before I restarted my mac. 1. My mac is a 13'' late 2008 mb with 2gb of ram (running leopard). 2. I JUST had my hard drive replaced due to a failure. 3. Before i restarted my computer i was having several "system extenstion" errors and when i tried to repair i recieved the message 'Underlying task reported failure on exit.' At the time, i was also trying to install Adobe CS5 Master Collection trial and i couldn't get past a password screen. This also prompted me to restart. Once the computer began to restart, it began updating boot caches. This was taking a very long time so i walked away from the mb. When i came back i realized the battery had died and when i plugged it back in and tried to get it to boot, it would get to the gray screen with the apple and the spinning logo underneath. But then it simply reboots.
I've tried restarting the pram. I've tried rebooting in single user mode (cmd + S) and got to the point where i could rebuild the tree (fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2) and that did it's thing for about ten minutes and it didn't fix the problem. I don't have my install disk but apple is sending me a new one and will be here by friday.

I have been using lots of software - indesign, photoshop, illustrator as well as other programs at the same time and my laptop started to slow down. I then tried to force quite pages and it wouldn't work so I had to force shut down. It then would not turn fully on and was on the grey screen for a long period of time. It eventually came back to homepage after about 30 minutes but did not fully load. It now wont go past grey screen and has a bar at the bottom.

My wife has a Macbook with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (Macbook4,1). I am trying to replace the original SATA hard disk (160 GB) with an SSD. I have two SSDs here with me:Â
1) Intel 320 series, 160 GB
2) Crucial M4, 128 GBÂ
In both cases, after replacing the hard disk with the SSD, I am unable to get the Macbook to get any further than the "Mac sound" and grey screen.Â
In my first attempt, I cloned the original disk to the SSD on another computer, verified the data got on there OK, and installed the SSD into the Macbook. In subsequent attempts, I just formatted the SSD to see if the Mac would recognize it at all.Â
When the original hard disk is installed, and my Snow Leopard install DVD is in the DVD drive, during the boot, I can hold down the option key and get a boot choice of booting from the hard disk or the DVD. With either SSD installed, when holding down the option key I get no choices at all, it just sits there (it does access the DVD for a few seconds but then nothing).Â
I have another 160 GB "regular" hard disk here as well and when I install that I also get the choice to boot from the hard disk or the DVD (although booting from the hard disk does not work since it's a hard disk from a PC).Â
combination of Macbook and SSD, installing into the hard drive bay? I've seen many posts from people who have had success putting an SSD into their Macbook so I am assuiming it's possible.Â
Some more information about the Macbook:
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.31f1Â

I purchased my Macbook in 2008, roughly July.
My fiance unknowingly shut down my macbook in the middle of start up. Before that it was running perfectly fine, I had no issues. After my fiance stopped the start up, the macbook won't turn on. It'll load up to the grey loading screen (example here)... It doesn't make much noise as it starts up either. I have all original discs that came with the macbook, if that helps any.Â
