May 18, 2010Well I had my first lockup today... i was in finder looking at some files on a external drive and then i just got the rainbow wheel. i let it set there for about 15 minutes no luck, then i manually stopped finder. After that nothing seemed to work right until I rebooted.Oh well that the first one since I got the thing...... Windows would have locked up 10 times over by now.

Jul 11, 2009I got my mac the summer of 2007. Recently I have been having a problem with the rainbow wheel frequently coming up every few minutes. Sometimes it goes away and others I have to restart my computer completely. My computer has also been running slower lately than usual. I don't know if the 2 have any correlation with each other or not. I did the disk repair it utilities, and also the thing with running the test with the disk, and it didn't seem to help, maybe I didn't complete them or something, I'm not sure.

Mar 4, 2012I'm using a Macbook Pro. I keep getting the rainbow wheel (2-3 times in 5 minutes) even using the simplest apps like safari or even just doing the the right-click. I have reformatted 2x and with a clean computer, I still get this problem. Sometimes the wheel goes away after about 15-30 seconds, sometimes my macbook pro just hangs and I have to manually reboot it. I have been to an authorized apple service center and they have told me there is no issue with the hard-disk, so I'm quite confused. I also noticed when I first got this issue, my spotlight was indexing. And when I finish reformatting it, it indexed again. But my primary problem lasted beyond this indexing.Â

Jun 23, 2014Ive been getting this issue on my macbook quite frequently now; dont think its hardware related and occurs randomly at any time up to 3 times a day where the computer will slowly begin to freeze.Â
It (usually) begins by my browser not being able to access a website (just a white screen in browser section), at this point im able to alt tab between apps for some time but eventually everything will hard freeze, same with the cursor which will turn into a rainbow wheel and also eventually freeze. Â
Can only resolve this by power button for 6 secs (good thing it starts up in 5 seconds)Â

Sep 6, 2014I Was having some trouble a few days ago with my computer running slow with basic tasks, would give me the rainbow spinner frequently. I have a feeling it might be because of some music I downloaded from a torrent website (?) so i decided to do a hard shut down a few days ago by holding the power button down and left it alone until today, where it asked me to log in and then had the pop up that said something like "your computer was shut down unexpectedly, would you like to open all the apps you had running" or something along those lines and I hit cancel instead of yes because i wanted the computer to start new with nothing open. Well after I hit cancel and logged in with my administrator password, it will not load my computer past the log in screen and just has me stuck on that screen with the rainbow spinner. Not sure what to do, I'm afraid of repeatedly doing hard shut downs. Not sure if I have a virus from the songs I downloaded but I don't think I'll be downloading anymore.

Oct 5, 2010I am using FCP 6.06, I imported video from two different video camcorders: Canon GL-2 mini-dv and a Sony Digital 8 TRV340. Importing from both of these cameras went pretty well, i had some dropped frames while importing, nonetheless it went pretty well. However, when i drop any of the footage into the timeline and I press play, it will play for a few seconds, hang up (spinning wheel) and then gives me a window that says: RT extreme has determined that these were caused by slow disks, please try: Increasing the speed of your disks, Decreasing the number of RT layers, Limiting your RT bandwith. AS of now i currently use a 1 TB Western Digital "My Book" for my scratch disk. I have tried everything I can think of and I am working on a Wedding video.

Nov 22, 2010I have a 2006 MBP (that may or may not be the problem) that freezes when I do anything. It happened sort of gradually. First, I was just getting the spinny rainbow when I had too many windows open or something. Then, it started just happening just because, sometimes only a couple minutes after my last restart. Now, I can't even open certain programs with it crashing right away (Safari, iTunes, iChat, Software Update.)
Safari doesn't even really open, it bounces in the dock then just sits there without being highlighted, but makes my computer absolutely unresponsive. I am able to use firefox (which I'm using right now, this is my only computer), but it won't be before long that I see the spiny rainbow again.

Mar 28, 2012I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way: [code] Enabled Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted.

MacBook :: Left Fan Giving High-pitched Whine / Noise Coming When Computer Is Running Off Battery
Dec 26, 2010This is my first post, and I apologize as it's a little long. I just wanted to get the whole story on the table and clarified.I've had one of the new Aluminum 13" MacBooks (2.0GHz C2D) since Christmas Eve. A few weeks ago, it accidentally fell off my desk at work (not a far drop , but far enough for my heart to stop for a few minutes) when I got tripped up in the power cord under the desk.
For all intents and purposes, the MacBok seemed to work fine. I had one of our IT staff, who happened to be a trained Apple repair tech, take a look at it; the only real damage was that the display hinge had been knocked a little out of alignment. Just ot be on the safe side, I took the machine to the Apple Store, where they told me not to worry about attempting to get the hinge fixed (because I'd be paying a lot of money for such minor work), and the Genius sold me a hardcover plastic Speck case for the MacBook.
While the Speck case certainly looked nice and madethe already sturdy laptop feel sturdier and "protected", I was a little concerned about the amount of heat the machine was giving off within the case. On Sunday, I unplugged the machine from the MagSafe charger for a few hours and left it closed in sleep mode. When I woke it back up, the fan on the left continually gave off some sort of high-pitched whine whenever the computer was in idle mode.
I Googled, searching this site and others, and read about the "CPU whine" in the previous generation MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I also saw where a few people with new Aluminum MacBooks were having this same issue or something similar:

It seems to only make the noise when the computer is running off of the battery - plugging in the MagSafe charger makes the noise quiet 85% of the time (I've found that plugging, unplugging, and replugging will not stop the whine from occurring).
I tried installing QuietMBP as was recommended in some posts, but the only setting that will stop the computer from whining is the "highest" setting (that is, allowing the processor 0 seconds of idle time), which causes QuietMBP to eat up 30% of my processor usage in Activity Monitor and to start the fans going (and, presumably, to significantly lower my battery life).
I don't know whether all of this was the result of the MacBook falling, from it overheating in the case, or something that "just happened". I set up an appointment with the Genius bar for today at 4 PM, but Idiscovered another odd occurance when I set up a new account for the Apple Store (rather than give them my password)
The noise never happened under the new account. Never. I left the machine idle until any and all initial processes were done. No noise. I checked Activity Monitor for stray processes. None. And no noise.
Now I'm bewildered. Could something have gone wrong somewhere in my account, leading to a corruption of a power management utility or process? I'm not canceling my appointment, but I am going to try a few things before I leave. I've already repaired disk permissions, and I'm about ot reinstall the 10.5.6 OS X combo update. Should I try to reset the PRAM too? What other options should I be looking at?
Or should I just wait, and let the Genius Bar folks look into it? As a note, I'm aware I may have to pay for any repairs because they may or may not blame them on the MacBook having dropped (despite two to three weeks passing between the fall and this issue arising), and I'm okay with paying for reapirs (though I will try my best to argue my case, of course).

Sep 22, 2009I have a 2.4 Ghz Macbook pro with 4 GB of RAM, and compared to a lot of other Macs - like the 2.6 Ghz/2 GB iMac I'm typing this on - it seems awfully slow to load applications. I'm running Snow Leopard, and the problem has not gotten any different or better.
For example, if I quit Word, after opening it, and then start it again, it takes 8 seconds. On this iMac, it takes 2 seconds. They're both running Word 2008.
Firefox 3.6 often takes 6 seconds to open, compared to more or less instantaneously on the iMac. It's true that if I open Firefox, close it, and then open it again on my MBP, it sometimes then loads instantaneously, but if I wait 30 seconds, it might take 6 seconds again.
I have my graphics card set to "high performance," so it should be using the nVidia card rather than the integrated card, and I have the 7200 rpm hard drive.
What's the deal? I can't think of any exceptional CPU/memory-hogging application that I'm running in the background, and activity monitor shows 85-90% capacity idle.
