My mac keeps freezing for several minutes at a time and I've even had to resort to holding down the power button a few times just to reboot the computer. I really only use iTunes, surf the web, and play World of Warcraft on it and I've never had any issues until about a month ago. I'm pretty computer illiterate so I don't really know how to fix or diagnose whatever the problem is, but come this September I'll have had this particular iMac for 2 years. I've downloaded every update I can, iTunes or otherwise and nothing is working.
View 12 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, I found my macbook running slow. The starting time used to be 2+ min but slow down to 10+ min. I tried to reinstal by installation DVD but the time bar showed 5+ hours required. I restarted the macbook and tried to format the HD, after proper steps taken, the time bar showed 17 days. Instead booting from the system, I tried to boot direct from my installation DVD.
After formatted the HD and re-instal the system, the MacBook seems running smooth again. But after installation of other programs, the same problem recurred. The system was getting slow. Re-starting it required waiting over 10 minutes. I tried to re-format the HD and installed the system again but still doesn't work. Under the disk utility "first aid" scanning through the HD, it showed "Invalid key length." and "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely."

I have a emac thats about 4 years old, always has run well and done everything good. Recently retired it to backup computer and did a total erase and instal of the os.. ran great till a few weeks ago when it froze after about 10 minutes of use. Tried it again the next day and got the same thing. I waited a week and then tried it and still...same thing. Unpluged it, hit the power button and waited a day... same thing. Unpluged everying except keyboard and mouse... same thing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the last few weeks my Macbook has started be begin freezing at seemingly random intervals. It is a 2008 Macbook, not a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air. At first this was only once a day, or once every other day, but it has gotten progressively worse. By today, I can't go more than 2 or 3 hours without it freezing, forcing me to manually restart the computer. The freezing is not application specific; once it freezes with one application, if I try to pull up anything on the menu bar, the menu bar proceeds to freeze. I haven't made any recent major changes to the computer, and it had been working perfectly fine before now. I'm working on scanning it in case it is a virus, but this is seeming increasingly unlikely.

it varies but generally every 5-15 min I need to shut off my wi-fi and turn it back on to connect to the network. I have a netgear router and just updated the firmware today hoping that would help but it did nothing, helped the windows laptop but not the iMac. It is set up in WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], does mac not work well with that, will WEP work better? If I change to WEP will it mess up a laptop running Windows 7 Pro?

Every since I upgraded my OS to 10.9, my performance has been going downhill. Now, even though I have reformatted my hard drive and have not even put any new data on it, it takes 45 minutes to restart and 25 minutes for me to open the window to write this message. Below is my system info. Why my system seems to have slowed down so much. You can see there is nothing on the hard drive to slow it down.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just brought my computer from work to my home and now it's freezing. The G4 running osx 10.4.. freezes about 15 seconds after each restart. The screen is still active but mouse/keyboard is frozen. If it is kept on after a few minutes the computer starts to get very loud, with all the fans working overtime.
I've tried opening it and making sure everything is seated and plugged in well.
Tried different mouse and keyboard.
Tried running disk permissions.
Tried starting to run scripts but can't get to then before the comp freezes.
Tried safe mode but it still freezes too.
Any ideas or do i need to go back to the office and get the restore disk and start over reinstalling anything?

Recently, I tried updating an app on my Macbook Air, specifically Red Crucible 2. I clicked update, it started downloading, reached 10 MB, then started downloading from the beginning again, and it kept looping. I have 23 GB free, so I'm sure it's not an issue with free space. I tried downloading other updates and the same thing happens again, it reaches 10 MB then starts downloading again!

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy 2011 21.5 inch iMac keeps freezing. Strangely, the trackpad works but nothing on the screen reacts to moving the cursor around or clicking anywhere. requiring a restart (using the power button on the back).
When I then restart, I get an immediate error message saying "A graphics problem has been detected" and enables me to report the problem, which I do.
However, this happens several times a day and only since an upgrade to Yosemite and I have tried a software update.

I have a G4, dual 450, 1G Ram running 10.4.11. Recently after downloading and opening an .rar file, a file named .DS_Store appeared on the desktop. I have since deleted the .rar file, but cannot delete the .DS file. It is appearing now in all of my programs, including my camera when I plug it in. I've tried ClamXav, MacScan, and DnsChangerRemovaltool, also What'sKeepingMe, but nothing can remove it. Info says it's a document, 16 KB, and it reads as date created the last time I turned the machine on. Can anyone tell me what this is and how I can get rid of it?

"Skype_6.18.0.493.dmg/Image data corrupted" I have tried everything tried using a different browser, change the gate keeper setting to allow downloads from anywhere, right clicking dmg file and click open but it just seems that for some reason my laptop will not let me open up this DMG. If I was to download the app, and get the grayed-out icon appeared in Finder, could I simply drag that icon to my hard drive and let the download continue there, or would that potentially corrupt files/break the download?

I am not a newbie to computers so I am aware that temporary files (swap files) are par for the course. I also realize that when dealing with larger files (video, for example) swap files tend to grow larger. But I can't reconcile going from over 200 gb of available space to showing literally 0 bytes available in less than a half an hour. Granted, I am exporting a video from iMovie (about 2 hours) but to loose over 200 gb of available hard drive space to a swap file doesn't seem right. Is this really my swap file or is something else possibily going on here?

I'm new to mac, so dont know if i'm doing something silly. But i'm downloading apple software in limewire (iWork, iLife, iSkull), whenever i download the files they come out in .exe or .zip, and when i unzip the files they turn into .exe.
These are apple software but i can't open them in .exe.
I updated my circa 2013 Macbook Air 13" to OSX Mavericks and a strange issue has started. Every time I open Finder it takes literal minutes to load the file listing, and while it loads it freezes the section where the file listing loads with whatever background it was opened over. This happens all the time, and once it finally loads, it will do the same thing if I try to go to a different folder. This renders Finder essentially useless and I have had to add a third party (forklift) app to browse and manage files.

when i down load a file in safari a download box pops up with the download and shows its progress, when this file is downloaded it then just disappears meaning i then have to go find the file where ever i have downloaded it.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it, they just download from safari.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile I was downloading a file earlier, I clicked on the Airport icon in the menu bar to see which wireless network I was connected to. As Airport scanned for wireless networks (it does it automatically after clicking the Airport icon), I noticed that the speed of the download dropped so far that it practically stopped for a moment. I tried it a few other times and got a similar result. Anyone else notice connection drops/slowdowns when clicking on the Airport icon while it scans for other networks? Is there a way to prevent this? I'm running OS X 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro. I posted it here because it seemed more of an OS thing than hardware.
