OS X Yosemite :: IMac Keeps Freezing / Needing A Restart
Dec 4, 2014
My 2011 21.5 inch iMac keeps freezing. Strangely, the trackpad works but nothing on the screen reacts to moving the cursor around or clicking anywhere. requiring a restart (using the power button on the back).
When I then restart, I get an immediate error message saying "A graphics problem has been detected" and enables me to report the problem, which I do.
However, this happens several times a day and only since an upgrade to Yosemite and I have tried a software update.

My IMAC keeps prompting me to restart after the screen turns grey. Essentially, after a few hours of use, the screen turns dark grey, filling in from the top to the bottom slowly. Once the screen has the dark grey hue, directions pop up in the middle of the screen for me to restart the computer. Once I restart it, the computer automatically generates an error box to report to apple. However, when I click the box to submit to apple, even if when the computer is connected and running well, it will not allow me to report it.

I just brought my computer from work to my home and now it's freezing. The G4 running osx 10.4.. freezes about 15 seconds after each restart. The screen is still active but mouse/keyboard is frozen. If it is kept on after a few minutes the computer starts to get very loud, with all the fans working overtime.
I've tried opening it and making sure everything is seated and plugged in well.
Tried different mouse and keyboard.
Tried running disk permissions.
Tried starting to run scripts but can't get to then before the comp freezes.
Tried safe mode but it still freezes too.
Any ideas or do i need to go back to the office and get the restore disk and start over reinstalling anything?

In the last few weeks my Macbook has started be begin freezing at seemingly random intervals. It is a 2008 Macbook, not a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air. At first this was only once a day, or once every other day, but it has gotten progressively worse. By today, I can't go more than 2 or 3 hours without it freezing, forcing me to manually restart the computer. The freezing is not application specific; once it freezes with one application, if I try to pull up anything on the menu bar, the menu bar proceeds to freeze. I haven't made any recent major changes to the computer, and it had been working perfectly fine before now. I'm working on scanning it in case it is a virus, but this is seeming increasingly unlikely.

So I even followed some tips from a previous discussion up here somewhere in this forum and still haven't succeeded.... When I tried the Option key at the startup chime, I got an padlock icon and underneath it there was a box like to enter a pass code with an right arrow tab next to it...

I have a 2009 Mac Pro that is running 10.10.1. It is using a Radeon 4870 still from the factory. I have had a mostly flawless experience in the last 5 years with the system, but it has lately been displaying graphical problems and then freezing completely. After the display does quirky stuff that I am attaching in the image, I can only move the cursor. No other actions can be performed, and the only option I have is a hard shutdown with the power button. Usually after I do this, the machine will boot with the chime, but no startup screen will ever appear. It just sets blank. The only way I have found around this is to hold the option key, then boot to my primary drive.
I notice this seems to happen after the computer has woken from sleep. But, the issue originally appeared for the first time after updating to the newest Logitech Control panel for my mouse. I thought it was that, so I removed it and am no longer using that at all. The issue still exists.
Here is an image of what the screen typically does.

when i was on my laptop and i forgot to put it on charge so it went flat while i was watching a movie (not on the internet). I couldn't be bothered charging it so i just put it down and went to sleep. The next morning i turned it on and tried opening safari and it went extremely slow, i got the beach ball and when i clicked the apple on top left to try to force quit, after 2 seconds of clicking that froze. When i tried to force quit it from my dock i would click force quit and then my dock would freeze. At this point my mac was just about completely frozen. The brightness didn't change, sound nothing but only the mouse could move. I reset and the exact same thing happened. Google Chrome works so i am using this and i get no freezing problems. It is just when i use Safari.

After updating to Yosemite 10.10.1, occasionally my Finder will freeze. I can continue to work in whatever program I am in, but I can't go anywhere else. When I force quit to try to relaunch the Finder, it doesn't respond. The only way to get it to work again is to shut off the computer using the on/off button. I have already tried deleting my Finder preferences.

Before two weeks I have done a clean install of OS Yosemite in my MBP retina.
But unfortunately I have noticed some bugs such as:
- When I press Shut down the dock stays the half freezed, not completely disappeared and then the system shut down.
- Its a grey screen when I switch on from sleep
- It has completely freezed 3 times and restarts itself
- The wifi signal has been lost 2 times, in my home using my router wlan.
- The continuity doesn't work with my iPhone 6+.
- I don't know but I think that Mavericks were faster..
I have done PRAM and SMC reset but nothing.

Whenever my iMac crashes (and that's been happening a little too frequently since I installed Yosemite) and I have to either restart or force-restart, every application that was open at the time automatically restarts as well. I guess some people might value this but, call me crazy, I don't. I usually have Chrome running with 3 or four windows and multiple tabs open; Mail with multiple windows open with emails I need to address; and any number of apps including Lightroom that is so processor intensive causing the startup to take a very long time. Not only that, but I use multiple desktops and when this happens EVERYTHING opens in the same desktop creating a miserable time-suck separating everything.
Is there any way to prevent this? I just want the computer to relaunch and then open whatever app I want when and where I want. Is that so wrong?

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system. Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro. The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer. I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system. I never had this problem using Mavericks.

Here's the problem: Let's say I have Chrome w/ three tabs and Pages open on my Mac Mini. If I go to the Apple Menu and restart, when the computer restarts I want to see nothing other than my desktop. However, regardless of whether "Close windows when quitting an app" in System Preferences > General is checked, the apps (and their respective tabs/windows/documents) pop up, too.
App state persistence, reopening apps on start, resume — whatever it's called, I want to disable it. It's super annoying. As mentioned, I tried the checkbox in System Preferences (checked and unchecked), and cannot find anything else that even refers to this. Happens on my Late 2012 Mac Mini and Late 2012 13" MacBook Pro.

Every time I restart (close and reopen) Safari, I receive a pop-up stating "Your Safari extensions have been migrated."
When I look my my extensions in Safari Preferences, they have all been disabled... (and most aren't even there!)
I will re-enable the extensions, and everything is good... until I close/exit Safari and open it again, when I receive the migration pop-up and have to start all over again.
I am running Safari 8.0 and OS 10.10.1

I just got a Mac about a week ago, I absolutely love it! I've been looking around on Google and no luck so I thought the best place to ask would be here. I'm in need of a syntax highlighting text editor (something like VIm, I use it for my college webserver but my website server doesn't have it). I'd prefer something free (not trials either). I have Dreamweaver, but it's on my PC. I just want something simple to work on my site when I'm not home.

I just installed Windows 7 on my 27" i5 iMac, and it was working fine until just now. It froze completely (I could move the mouse around) for a minute, and then it unfroze.
I kept using it, and then it froze again, but this time I had to restart by holding down the power button. It just happened again, and I had to restart again.
The only thing I have running is Chrome, and this is a fresh install. What's going on?

I currently have a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz, 90GB HD, 1GB DDr SDRAM... it's ok, but is now getting slightly outdated. Converting takes FOREVER, programs are slow and often crash, I'm nearly out of hdd space and I can't use new application as some require Intel.
So with Apples announcement of the new 'updates' to the MacBooks and the MacBook Pros, I am really torn on which one to get. My initial thought was MBP but then MacRumors posted information about the Montevina Centrino 2 due in June, and then all the speculation started about the next MacBook and Pros Revisions.
It must have been this time a couple of years ago, and I bought my PowerBook, and then a few months down the line the transition to Intel began...
What do I go for? A MacBook (2.4GH White) or do I just go ahead and get a MacBook Pro (2.5GH 15")?
I really feel like I'm downgrading if I go for a MacBook.
When I got my first mac it shouldn't have been a PowerBook, I should have went for the iBook (is that what it was called?)
For the last 4 Months, all I've used my PB for is: writing with Word and Final Draft, iTunes (movie, music, tv shows), converting for itunes, e-mail, internet, and Adium (chatting). I'd like to start a website showcasing my University Media work.

I purchased a 24" iMac in fall of '07 and up until have had no problems at all. Let me describe the problems I'm having now and maybe someone can tell me what to do to remedy them.
A couple weeks ago it started freezing randomly. The mouse will switch to the beach ball and just spins endlessly. I can move it around but can't really do anything other than that. I have to do a hard reset to get it back to normal. Sometimes a couple programs are open, and sometimes none. It seems like it happens often when I quick switch from one user to another. It will switch, work for awhile, then freeze.
Now, no big deal, annoying, but whatever. But, the other day after doing a hard reset it revolted into a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I did some research and found that I needed to repair the startup disc using the snow leopard disc. I did that and it allowed me to boot it back up normaly but didn't really solve the freeze up issue.
So, that just happened again, so I'll have to boot it up with the disc again and repair the startup disc when I get a chance. It's really beyond frustrating now.
I have repaired all permissions, updated all firmware, made sure the drive isn't full, pretty much everything short of backing up and wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS. Is that what I need ro do now? I mean, I know I need to, but is there something I can do to remedy until I can get around to doing that?

I have an old iMac Rev A (or B?) and it is constantly freezing. It freezes in OS 8, 9, and 10.3.. but most frustrating is that it also freezes while trying to install an OS. So right now it does not have an OS installed because of that. It will not boot up to my OS 9.1 disc.. but it will boot up to it's original 8.5 disc and a 10.3 disc.. However it always freezes near the beginning of the install process (often before it even writes to the HDD). I tried taking out the old RAM and leaving it with just the one (new) 256MB chip and that didn't work.
It was freezing before with only the old RAM so. I guess it's not the RAM. I have an identical iMac that doesn't choke on anything (never freezes) and it only has 96MB of RAM. I don't know what else I can do. I'm trying to use XPostFacto to put 10.4 on this thing (it's possible, I want to try it out at least) but it won't get through the first OS install and if it does, it won't get through the second (10.4). Even more frustrating is that I don't have any diagnostic software such as the Apple Hardware Test because the original iMac didn't come with any.
