MacBook Pro :: Electric Current Through Aluminum Case / Running Fingers Across The Top

Sep 12, 2008

I recently traveled to Europe with a MacBook Pro, and plugged it into the outlet with a travel converter. My understanding is that the brick on the magsafe cable works as a transformer and it is safe to plug into a European outlet. I've never had a problem with other laptops.

Everything worked fine with the machine, except I could always feel an "electric" sensation through my hands when touching the aluminum case. This was especially apparent when running my fingers across the top -- it was as if I could feel an electric current running through the case.

This seemed harmless, and I ran the computer without fail during my time abroad. My question is out of curiosity -- is this sensation normal? What exactly is it?

MacBook Pro :: Fix Electric Current Fault

Jun 6, 2010

I was an owner of a white macbook for just over a year until the motherboard decided to give up the ghost... So I eventually bought myself a new 13" Macbook Pro. Everything was going just beautifully, until I realised when I was charging it, I had this weird electrical current going through all the aluminum.First of all the first two things that came to mind was. What's the computer and most importantly MY health going to be like if its exposed to all this! Anyway. I read a few threads, and they were talking about the "Grounding" problem. Luckily I got my old macbook charger out and plugged it in.. The problem went! So I was then thinking on where in the charger lied the problem? So I took the cable part from the Megasafe to the socket from my macbook, and then put it into my macbook pro Megasafe... and everything worked brilliantly! I'm no genius, however if you guys feel that tingly electrical/static current going through you're MBP, go and buy yourself a new cable. However as Apple is so popular, I'm sure if you try one of you're friends (As they will undoubtably have one) and see if it is that the problem. In anycase, I'm very happy with my Macbook Pro Apple make some awesome products. Bill Gates should just pack up and go fishing if you ask me. He can never compete with Me old mate Steve

PowerPC :: Does PB 15.4 Aluminum Case Is Exchangeable With The MBP 15.4 Case

Oct 18, 2007

Does anyone know if the PB 15.4 Aluminum case is exchangeable with the Macbook Pro 15.4 case? I have a 1.6Ghz Powerbook which has a few dents in the front but I don't see any of these cases for sale on Ebay, but I do see Macbook Pro cases. It's really a nasty cosmetic issue I'd like to resolve and then sell it.

MacBook Pro :: Aluminum Case Really That Durable?

Aug 2, 2009

Apple claims the aluminum case is durable. Which, I can see why they would say that. But, I've had my MBP for about a month, and it's already got a dent on it. And I take care of this baby as if it was a diamond. Plus, the pads on the bottom aren't even that durable. They are already wearing out.

MacBook Pro :: Bottom Case Too Flexible / Aluminum Not Thick Enough?

Apr 26, 2010

I was hoping that Apple would address this in the new MBPs but alas it seems they are the same.I hate the fact that my 15 and 17 mbp bottom cases are too flexible and will actually pop in and out if you hold it in the middle.I think on my new mbp I did this and accidentally heard the fan hitting the case.To get around this, you must hold the mbp from sides only.

MacBook :: Aluminum Replacement Case And Topcase For The Plastic System

Dec 28, 2009

Since then I've replaced the HDD, NIC, and a cracked topcase, which is now cracked again - I'm careful with it, but strong magnets + plastic + time = crack. It's not my primary computer, but it's still nice to bring to school with me.So my question is, does anyone make an aluminum replacement case and topcase for the plastic macbook? Only the topcase is damaged but after however many years with the same laptop I'd like a change (not a huge fan of plastic in the first place).

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And/or Top Case Cover To Eliminate Aluminum Reflection?

Jun 25, 2012

Getting a new MacBookPro with high res anti-glare screen.I type with two fingers, and often look at the keyboard.

For eye comfort, and to prevent retinal after-images, I'd like all the aluminum dull black. I found tape and fabric to cover up most of the top case and the bezel, but the keyboard is a challenge. KBCovers does not produce a keyboard cover which will be black at the bases of the keys and clear over the keys, which would allow the backlit keyboard to transmit.   So first choice is a keyboard cover which has black everywhere there's aluminum, and has clear for the keys.   Second choice is an all clear keybooard cover and I'll adhere black to the aluminum around the keys (and top case).

Anyone aware of such keyboard covers ?

Anyone aware of such top case covers ?

(ColorWare voids a three year AppleCare, so ColorWare is not an option)

Never understood Apple's engineering design of making a screen anti-glare and anti-reflective, while making the remainder of the computer glaring and reflective and contrasting.  Ye olde black MacBook is such an eye-pleasing and comfortable design.

MacBook Pro :: Clinging Sound From System / Low Voltage Current When Touch Aluminum Unibody

Oct 6, 2010

I finally put my hands on a brand new MacBook Pro 15" (base model) with Hi-Def Glossy Screen...I'm playing with it since a couple of days and I wonder if it is somehow defective...I've already passed through the following thread but I haven't found the answers I'm looking for....URL

I've also searched trough the forum, found a couple of related threads but no conclusive answers were given, so that's why I'm posting my doubts and asking for you to comment or give your personal experiences or advices...

1) Power dazzle (sorry I don't know how to better express it)
When I plug the cable to recharge the battery and the battery gets finally completely recharged, I feel a sort of low voltage through my hands when I touch the aluminum unibody... I was used to feel the same thing on the touchpad of my former pc when its logic board started to break... (that's why I'm so worried about this potential issue)Is it normal? Do you experience the same thing? Is it to notify the battery is fully charged? I don't think so: a pop-up message would be much more effective...

2) Clinging sound
When I use the MBP in a quiet room, I often hear a clinging sound from the touchpad... I suspect it is the HDD's head that moves to perform an operation... or is it something completely different? In any case, it is very annoying: when I hear it, I immediately start to search myself for any tab of a zipper that may produce it...Again, is it normal? Does your MBP is the same? Does it annoy you? Am I simply paranoid? Did you do something to effectively reduce it (SSD)?

3) Battery life
I tried to calibrate the battery properly, nevertheless I didn't experienced the advertized battery life... I think it depends on the fact I have the Hi-Def screen that is more power demanding than the default one...

Is this the effective reason? How long does your battery last? (I cannot post my value because I just discovered the option to show time besides battery icon...) Any suggestion to make the battery last longer? (I already use cable rather than wi-fi and Intel graphic card rather than Nvidia one)

4) If I move my finger tips on the bottom of the unibody enclosure, I can feel a small step between the enclosure and the cover (something less than 1/3 of a mm) in the area below the touchpad that progressively disappear toward the hinge area...

Does your cover integrate seamlessly into your unibody enclosure or not?Is it an indication of some sort of refurbished intervention or is it normal this way? How can I understand if it is a refurbished MBP or a brand new one? (It's been bought by my university, so I don't know exactly what has been ordered... there is something I have to look for to understand the case? A particular notice, booklet or something like that?)

Mac :: Do The Current MacBooks White AND Aluminum Use The Same LCD Panel

Feb 17, 2009

Do the current MacBooks, both the white polycarbonate w/NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and the aluminum (Unibody) use the same or different LCD panels?I know that the white MacBook has fluorescent back lights for the display, whereas the aluminum MacBook has LED back lights. I also know that the white MacBook has a glossy LCD display, whereas the aluminum MacBook has an even glossier glass panel over the LCD display.I understand that both MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models use better LCD display panels, but I'm not in the market for either so that's a moot point. Since I've read conflicting reports as to whether one MacBook display is better or worse than the other what I'd like to know is if the physical LCD panel used in both varieties of MacBook is the same or different?

Intel Mac :: Wired Aluminum Keyboard Not Working Running Snow Leopard

May 27, 2012

I bought an iMac on dec, 2010 it came with snow leopard and a wired aluminum keyboard, everything was good until dec, 2011 when my keyboard suddenly stopped working, I took it to an apple store and they replaced it, everything was fine until last month when my new keyboard stopped working again.

I have an old macbook (1st gen of intel-based macbooks) and if I connect the keyboard to that macbook it works just fine, I have checked and all the USB ports on my iMac and they work but when I connect the keyboard it just doesn't recognizes it as a keyboard (or as anything because it doesn't show on system profiler). I have connected another keyboard I own (a logitech wireless one) and the imac recognizes it, I don't know what to do.

Btw, if I disconnect the keyboard for a day or two it works again when I connect it to the iMac, also If I use the USB ports attached to the keyboard I get an error that the USB is taking too much power and it shuts down (and then the keyboard stops working again on the iMac)

When browsing using Firefox (Haven't tried other browsers) and using the two finger gesture to scroll, it will stop scrolling, won't go down or up, and the only way to get it unstuck is to wiggle the page slider and then it will work again. Is this a Firefox, OSX, or hardware issue and is there a fix to it?

MacBook Pro :: Three Fingers On Trackpad And Welcome Screen

Aug 18, 2009

I tried to do an import from my old MB to my new MBP (unibody) and I got so much of bloat and crap from the old one, that I just reinstalled OSX on the MBP - which has literally saved me gigs. Here's a problem though: Before I could use 3 fingers on the trackpad to "jump" up and down (the beginning or end) on a webpage, but now I am unable to do that, only left to right (forward/backward) is working. How do I get that old functionality back? And my second question, after I installed osx you get that "welcome animation" which basically says "welcome" in a lot of languages. How do I get that to play again?

MacBook Pro :: Useful Trackpad (Three Fingers) Gesture?

Aug 22, 2009

If you all knew about this before then sorry - I just haven't seen any mention of it anywhere but it definitely works. It may only be a program specific thing cos it doesn't work in mail or itunes but in iWork it jumps a page at a time and in firefox it skips to the bottom of the page. I find it very useful when browsing so I thought I'd let you know. You put three fingers down (I use my 3 middle) and just scroll with the outside 2 leaving your middle finger still. It feels a bit awkward at first but once I got used to it it was fine.
