I am copying my saved iphoto from G drive to WD drive and the box on the computer says 'preparing to copy to MY Book' , 1445 Items, for 15 hours now. Is it really copying or not? Should I start over?

I am trying to copy the iPhoto library to my newly installed NAS drive. I have 2 libraries (3.6gb and 16.8gb). The smaller one copied across no problem but when copying the second I get an error 36 after it has copied 30mb of data.
I have tried all avenues:
- Restarted iPhoto holding down alt and opt and repairing permissions.
- Rebuilt library using iPhoto Library Manager
But I still get the same message. I have backed up the whole Mac using Superduper to a small external drive and that works fine. Part of the reason I bought the NAS drive was to back up photos, and now it doesn't work!
Also, I do when checking Console I get the following message regularly:

I got a WD10EALX Cabiar Blue drive last week and copied my existing internal drive that had Tiger OSX on it. It booted fine until I copied an iphoto library from a friend's Mac and now this disk won't boot. I get the circle with the slash through it and the folder with the question mark on it. I ran it through disk utility and it was verified with no problems.

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file. Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

On my Mac, especially when copying a lot of files, the "preparing to copy" function before any copying actually takes place is too dang long. Is there any way to disable the "preparing to copy" part so that when I copy anything, it simply starts copying right away?
I don't need to the OS to guess how long the copy will take or to detect if I have enough free space. I just want to the copy to go as soon as I tell it to.
I'm upgrading to a MacBook Pro soon from my current late 2007 Macbook. I just want to know what is the exact procedure on copying the hard drive on my current MacBook to the MacBook Pro I'm getting soon? I want it so it is exactly the way my Mac looks right now. I've got an external drive that was a Time Machine backup drive. It's at the police station as evidence for something and they will not let me take it back. However, they will let me come down and make a copy of it. I might only have one shot at this so I'm trying to think of the best way to do it successfully and quickly.
Can I just bring another external with me, my Macbook, and then copy the files from the Time Machine backup external drive to the other external drive? If so, what is the facility for doing this quickly? I'm kind of new at Macs and am unsure. I do not have an extra Mac that I can simply use Time Machine to restore to to replace it's contents.
I think I have found a flaw in OSX 10.6.4 file copying..I normall back up my files, by dragging from a folder on my HD to an identical folder on my external HD.The folder I am copying has 86 files in it, but there are only about two dozen new files added since my last back up.I have been telling it by the dialogue box, not to replace identical files in the back up folder, and clicking the check box to apply to all."but when I press the dont copy button, in the copy progress box it says it is copying 86 files. I've bought a Seagate External Hard Drive, and want to copy my photos from the Macbook Pro to it. Every time I try and copy them, a message appears 'Unable to render file for export' followed by the drive details and a string of numbers. How I should be copying them? Is there a way I can set up the copy so that if it gets interrupted I can resume the transfer? At the moment the I just know X of 100 GB has been transferred. On the destination drive you can't see any of the files being transferred across until the entire operation is complete (on a pc you can normally see the files that have been transferred immediately) ... I'm a bit worried that if I turn my laptop off or I have any network issues the transfer will fail..
