MacBook Pro :: How To Boot Of External Computer

May 7, 2012

I was copying over a SD card via the SD Card read to my internal hard drive. Half way through it froze. And it wouldn't let me do anything. I removed the memory card and all I or was a spinning rainbow circle.  So I powered off the MacBook manually (holding power button).  When it started up again it came to the apple logo. And froze. So like a idiot I manually powered off the MacBook again.  Next time it booted it showed me the stop sign.I tried to boot from cd (holding C while laptop starts), the disk spins but ends up hanging on a White screen.  Now I don't mind reinstalling OS x over it. But I just need one folder from It. Is there anyway I can connect this MacBook to my mac pro browse the MacBook internal hard drive and copy over the folder I need?

MacBook Pro :: Boot From External Firewire DVD / Optibay-Boot Camp?

Oct 13, 2010

Is it possible to boot from an external Firewire DVD Drive? It certainly isnt from an external USB DVD. Real answers only please, not "I think so" ones based on HDDs or rumours you may have heard!...

Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.

Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...

MacBook :: Computer Will Not Boot?

May 25, 2012

I have a mid-2010 MBP. Earlier when I was not actively using it, it started beeping very loudly in evenly spaced intervals every few seconds.  It seemed unresponsive, so I turned it off by holding the power button. Now it will not boot up. The little white indicator light comes on and I can hear the fans turn on, but that is it. It will not even go to the boot screen.

I had the logic board replaced about a week ago, but otherwise nothing new has been installed software or hardware.

Power Mac G5 :: Cannot Boot From DVDs - Defaults To External FW Boot Drive With 10.3.x

Dec 20, 2007

This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

MacBook Pro :: FireWire Target Disk - Computer Won't Boot - Data Specialist?

Dec 13, 2010

I have a friend who's oldish-Unibody MacBook Pro started giving him the folder with question mark-flashing symbol on boot-up. I guess it could be PRAM, but in any case, he wants to get his data off the hard drive. The computer wouldn't boot up from the install disk (holding 'c' on boot), all I have managed is to put it into Target Disk Mode, with my own MPB. The funny thing is, that it works, but all that mounts on my computer is the Install Disc (in his disk drive) and his hard drive shows up in my disk utility (see below), but it will not mount, and if I try to repair it, it gives me an error and DUPLICATES the original 'root' drive. Does this mean the hard drive itself is damaged and we need to go to a 'data specialist' to get everything off or is there anything else I could try?

MacBook :: Using Computer With External Display And Lid Closed?

May 8, 2009

So I've recently connected my MacBook to an external display (a TV actually). Obviously, when I close the MacBook's screen the computer goes to sleep. How do I stop this from happening? I checked in 'help', it said that if I connected the monitor to the computer after closing the display, the computer would continue to run with the display closed. I've already connected it all though (running cables through cabinets, etc.) and I don't really want to undo all of that! Is there an easier way to set the computer to stay on (as opposed to entering sleep mode) when the display is closed?

MacBook Pro :: FAT Formatted External Hard Drive Is Not Readable By This Computer

Jun 2, 2014

when I insert my 'FAT' formatted external hard drive (Samsung M3) into my mac book pro it comes up with the error message that says "the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" and I therefore cannot access the files. The story (potential further details):

1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.

2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.

3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.

4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.

MacBook Air :: Install Boot Camp Without External Superdrive?

Feb 21, 2008

I think this has been talked before but I can't find any good answers.

I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional (limited space, otherwise I'd use vista.. boo @ vista. haha) as a boot camp partition. Problem, I didn't fork out the $99 external superdrive. The good news, I did borrow a external DVD drive from my friend. I plug it in, it boots, but it gets a blue screen saying "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" or something along that line. Ok, no luck there.

I tried using the Parallels method. I created an ISO image, booted from it, installed XP into the Boot Camp Partition through Parallels, but once the transfer's finished, it tries to boot off the Hard Drive and it just hangs. (Total install isn't even completed.)
