I recently had to re install a new hard drive and I'm trying to restore my computer from my external hard drive... how do I do that?

On a different external hard drive (2), I have a disk image of my macintosh HD (the computer's original hard drive with all my data on it) How do I go about restoring from the disk image on the external drive(2) to external hard drive (1)? Â
I want to be able to boot from the external hard drive (1) and have all my data that I backed up as a disk image on external hard drive (2)

when I insert my 'FAT' formatted external hard drive (Samsung M3) into my mac book pro it comes up with the error message that says "the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" and I therefore cannot access the files. The story (potential further details):Â
1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.Â
2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.Â
3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.Â
4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.Â

1 broken mac, screen dead - may be able to access the hard drive, but with migration assistant I don't see (literally) how I can. Or can I? 1 External Hard drive, with what appears to be the entire contents of the old mac on it. I can't seem to find the applications I need to restore to new mac, and the Address book won't update, even when I trash the one on new computer, and load the old one. iBook G4 - both models same. word new when speaking of these macs not taken literally, I'm guessing 2004 models.

Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu. Â
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.Â

My external hard drive has been repeatedly ejected improperly and now it is not displaying on my computer, not even in disk utility. How do I re-mount this external hard drive? In the past when this has happened, all I had to do was go to Disk Utility or use DiskWarrior to fix the issue but now it won't even show up in either of these apps. Â

I just bought a new 1 TB external hard drive for back up purposes. When i connect it via USB to my Snow Leopard macbook pro, it gives me a "this disk not readable by this computer message". I click ignore, and it lets me do whatever i want to the disk - read, write, etc. I have tried repair disk - tells me it's good to go, and tried reformatting several times - thought not zero disk data or the 7 pass bs.

I use another external harddrive for time machine back-ups (backing up both the IMac and external harddrive with my iPhoto libraries). Recently the EHD with my photo libraries crashed. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive that I connect to my computer via an IDE to USB adapter. It works quite well, most of the time. A couple days ago I tried copying a large file to the drive (which is in FAT-16 I think) and the copy froze after 28 MB. The hard drive failed to eject, so I just disconnected it without ejecting. After I dismissed the device removal warning, I immediately plugged the HD back in and opened disk utility. I tried to reformat it, but the computer froze and my screen dimmed and the warning came up telling me to reboot in several different languages.
Now, whenever I plug in the hard drive, it is not acknowledged by the computer at all. I always end up unplugging it after a couple minutes. After I unplug it, a folder with the name of the drive (which happens to be "untitled") appears on the desktop, but I can't do anything with it. This folder is classified as a disk and it is acknowledged by Disk Utility. A couple minutes after I disconnect the HD, Mac OS X always quits and I have to reboot. How can I repair this hard drive? How can I get Disk Utility to acknowledge it?

I want to verify if Migration Assistant will restore a backup from NAS drive to a new computer. I just got a WD My Book Live Duo NAS drive which supports Time Machine backups for Lion (and Snow Leopard). Unlike backups in Snow Leopard and the WD My Book World Edition (white light), the new NAS drive creates a sparsebundle the first time a backup is initiated. When I open Time Machine, a single volume for my backup appears. I have 3 Macbooks backing up to this drive but when I open Time Machine on any computer, only the backup created for that computer is shown. This raised a question for me that if my computer dies, how do I restore the backup from the NAS drive to the new computer? Is this what Migration Assistant will do? What are the limitations? Does the new computer have to have the same IP address as the old computer? Can I select what gets restored? Â

I have a hard drive enclosure, but I was wondering if when I install my 500GB hard drive, would I be able to use the enclosure to transfer files from my 250GB drive? View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

I moved everything I needed to my hard drive and wiped and reloaded my mac. I then checked my time machine backups on my hard drive and found the malware files on the time machine backups too. so i took what I needed off my hard drive and wiped that, but without realising have deleted my uni work folder containing my essays. Is there anyway to recover the files? I've tried using a couple of programs online but there only trials, so when I find the file I cant restore it.

I have the Macbook Air, purchased last year, the version that did not come with any USB or disk containing the OSX software. Apparently in this version, the solution to restoring Mac OSX lies within the actual mac, there being a partition or something for this purpose. I saw this online, and if this really is the case, i'm quite sure i accidentally deleted it. Sigh.
I have an external hard drive i have copies of all my data on it luckily with 500gb that i use as a start up disk a lot because of the extra memory. I created this using the disk utility method. I was trying to get the boot camp program running on my internal hard drive, and ran into the ol' "need atlas 10gb of free memory space" no matter what i deleted. I copied and pasted all the important things onto my external and restarted my Mac on it. I heard the solution was to simply back up your data, wipe it, download boot camp, then restore everything. Unfortunately i simply wiped my Macintosh HD internal hard drive, and my computer no longer recognises it as a start up disk! Whenever i try to start up using it, i simply get a blank screen with a question mark. When i look at its contents using my external, theres absolutely nothing there. I was up all night online looking for a way to fix this, and nothing seemed to be working, I can remote install it, but i can only get hold of another computer to do this next week and i'd like another alternate solution.
I'm pretty sure i removed Mac OSX from my internal hard drive. The thing is, my mac runs off of my external just fine, so this must have OSX running ok. I'm wondering if i can somehow use this to fix up my internal. The solution i want is to simply be able to run my mac book with out my external hard drive; this being currently impossible.

This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.
