i have a big problem with my MBP 13". I install Mac os x (try also Maveriks) on a HDD drive it works fine, but when i put this HDD inside (internal) it won't boot.
View 5 RepliesI started this situation with a bootable hard drive that I removed from a 4,1 (mid 2008) and a brand new unibody MacBook Pro. What I wanted to do was use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new MBP. I used CCC to clone the drive to the new one and repaired permissions on the internal drive and tried booting from it. No Luck. I figured this was stupid to do and I could just use migration assistant so I decided to reinstall Leopard on the unibody. Unfortunately when I attempt to boot from the DVD it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I also tried holding down option to open the boot manager and select the DVD, when hit enter over the DVD it freezes. The interesting thing is that when I connect the old drive to the unibody using an enclosure I can boot from the external drive no problem. I tried using another computer to install leopard on the unibody over firewire and the installation went fine but when I start the unibody it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I am also positive the hard drive isn't damaged or anything because when I go to the boot manager after leopard is installed the internal drive shows up but when I select it, it freezes. I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, repairing the disk (which is successful). When I try to boot into single user mode the computer freezes when loading the text. Another interesting thing is that when do boot from the external drive it goes through verbose mode every time and I never choose to do that. Right now I am attempting to clone drive using Super Duper to new drive and see what happens.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy internal HD failed. I have a recent Super Duper bootable Clone connected with FW800. The option key at startup doesn't allow me to access the clone drive. I press the start key, wait for the "bong," hold down the option key and nothing happens - just whiring, some crunchy sounds and a solid blue screen. I was able to reset the PRAM using the command-opt-P-R keys and got the 2nd "bong", but that hasn't helped the problem. It's a 2008-9? MBP running 10.6.? I've order a replacement internal drive. I was hoping to be able to boot to the clone and work in the meantime.Â

Forum moderators and my respected macrumor fellows, please feel free to direct me to a specific link if you find the questions redundant.Recently, I have had the HD making terrible noise and several days ago, the computer cannot boot at all. When I pushed the power button, the screen shows a folder in the middle with a Mac face and switches to a question mark back and forth. However, it just gets stuck at that stage. I suspected that I have a HD problem and wanted to boot from my clone Firewire HD. Unfortunately, the computer will not boot with Firewire HD either.

The CD/DVD died just three weeks after warranty expired and Apple said (in essence) 'tough crap...you didn't buy AppleCare'.I have functioned without a CD/DVD drive since then, and everything was fine... until a week or two ago. We installed an update in iTunes, and everything started running S...L...O...W... So, we rebooted the computer! Instead of rebooting, it made the "bong!" sound and then a screen with an apple and a spinning wheel runs indefinitely. We let it run all night the first time and it stays on that screen for as long as you let it.

Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.
Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...
This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

View 4 Replies View RelatedPowerbook g4, internal keyboard fried. Using an external mac keyboard. Rebooted with disc - Coriolis CD Maker using iDefrag [URL]. Did a full defrag of internal harddrive. Unable to boot back from internal harddrive/ There are no options to do so.
I would either need a hardware way of restarting from main internal hd or a command while idefrag is working. Unable to eject cd as well.
Apple's default audio drivers (for Windows) for the built-in speakers on the iMac make them sound horrible, they have way too much bass, whereas in OS X they sound great. Why is this?

If I resize the directory window in my internal drive, it does not preserve the new window size. But if I resize an external disk directory window, it preserves the new size.Â
I found out from Get Info that my internal drive is locked with read only permission only, but my external drive is unlocked with read+write permission.Â
How do I change the permission so the window states can be preserved on my home drive?

This is my first post here I hope somone can help me. I have a MBP from 2008 I upgraded to Lion about a month ago and had some minor issues right away, but now I can't get past the boot screen without a kernel panic. I did a time machine restore to one of my external drives and it boots up fine. I figured my internal drive was going bad so I installed a new one yesterday and the exact same Kernel Panic happens. I don't live in a city with an apple store so that isn't an option for me. I am contemplating going all the way back to leopard because the was the last os I can remember that was completely stable for me.

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning. Â
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo. Â
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.Â
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

I'm trying to set up a dual boot, Windows 7 64-bit and Lion install on a 2011 Mac Mini. I have Windows installed and completely up to date, with up to date Boot Camp drivers. Unfortunately, I get no sound from the internal speaker or by plugging headphones or speakers into the speaker jack. I do hear the startup chime on boot, and have sound in OS X. Windows thinks it has the right driver for the sound card, and lists Speakers - High Definition Audio Device in the Playback tab of the Sound control panel, and it is the default device. If I click "Test" the level bounces as if sound is being output, but I hear nothing.Â
As a test, I found I do get sound out of the HDMI port when I plug it into my TV, but this computer will need to be in an office with either stereo speakers attached or using the built in speakers in the mini.

I just picked up a Mac Mini today, after I lost all patience with my circa 2007 MacBook Pro when it stopped booting up this morning. I ordered more RAM and am planning to install the recently replaced hard drive from my MBP into my Mac Mini. I'm just wondering, will that drive just show up as another hard drive, similar to the way that external hard drives appear? And more importantly, the old hard drive has an older version of Snow Leopard installed, as well as a bunch of software, including my Adobe CS software. I've already jumped through hoops with Adobe to get my software reinstalled on my MBP a few months ago, and I don't feel like dealing with that again. So if the drive does show up as a separate device, can I just run my Adobe software from that drive? Or do I have to reboot but select that old hard drive at startup (if that's even an option) to run all software on it?Â

The PowerBook has been asleep and not used for a few weeks. I woke it up last week for a few minutes to try and print out a document. It restarted just fine after installing the printer driver. Then it went back asleep until today.
I decided I had better shut it down as it has been sleeping a lot. It's shut down for about 5 minutes when I boot it back up to find it stuck at the Apple logo with the (spinning) spinner. What I tried to do to solve the problem:
1. Booted into Terminal mode (command-s) and typed exit so I could see the boot log. It appears to attempt to boot yet repeatedly prints:
> localhost /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow[92]: Login Window Application Started -- Threaded auth

2. Booted into Terminal again, and mounted the volume. I was able to do ls to list the file contents - so I CAN get to my files. It's not a disk issue. Then I ran fsck -fy. It reported the disk as OK.
3. Rebooted and reset PRAM. No change
4. Reset NVRAM. No change.
5. Popped in the Leopard install disc and restarted. Booted into Leopard disc.
6. Tried to repair permissions from Leopard disc - it just hung and I had to cancel the process.
7. Verified disk from Leopard disc. Reported as OK.
8. Clicked the next button on the install screen. Tried to install. "You don't have enough space"... The skimpy 40GB HD is so packed with stuff that it can't install. And my external HD won't connect to it, it never shows up. Not like I can move off anything anyway as it won't boot...Â
I CANNOT format the HD. I have stuff on there I can't lose. Does the Terminal recognize and mount USB devices so I can copy from the Terminal? If not I guess I could delete some apps and Xcode and stuff, maybe the System folder...Â
I just got a used mac pro quad. I plan to use it for video production- final cut pro, pics - aperture, and music production- protools. THe computer came with 3 - 10k rpm 160g hd's. Two of them are set up as a raid 0. I like the idea of having a faster drive as a boot drive, but 160 seems kind of small to me as the drive to run memory hungry apps and the operating system. Am I right? I could go to a 300g 10k rpm drive. I am also thinking about getting a bigger drive, say a 750g or 1 tb 7200 rpm. Should I use this as the boot drive or as a secondary storage drive?. If it's the boot drive should I add the other 160g 10k drive to the raid or keep it separate? I assume that neither way would be wrong, nor create a problem, but since I haven't put anything on it yet, I'm wondering what would be the most efficient way to manage my files and get the most out of my computer.

They say I have to take it to the apple store to get it changed back, but couldn't I just start it up in target disk mode, and reformat the internal drive use carbon copy cloner or something like that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing 10.6 on my MBP running 10.5.8. I had launched the installer and after about 20 mins of the installation, my MBP rebooted launching the CD installer window. I went ahead and started the install and selected my internal HD. It starts the install and then gave me an error "Can't install on this HD." I went ahead and quit the installer and tried to start up from the internal HD. It starts up with the apple logo and progress circle but then just shuts back down again. I'm able to boot back up using the 10.6 installer CD, then using Terminal, navigate to see all my user files.
I guess my question is what's the best way to grab all my files off the internal hd so I can do a clean install of 10.6? I tried setting my MBP as a Firewire disk to grab the files but when connecting it to another mac, no disk drive is recognized. I thought about just launching Terminal and copying the files onto an external drive. Just wondering if that's the best route? Is there still a way to boot up from my internal HD to move my user files?
I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD. Â
I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".Â
I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.Â

I run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).
I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)
Just an FYI. Tech Support at Allsoft states The Disk Warrior 4.2 Boot DVD will not Boot the new 2010 MBP's. They are waiting for information (software) from Apple.
Will need to use Target Mode or another Mac connected with Firewire till then. Boot from that then run DW from your MBP.
Im trying to reinstall osx from my flash drive. The problem im having is after i hold option and click on the flash drive icon to boot it, nothing happens the arrow icon greys out like its being click, but it does nothing.
I also tried installing from the dvd with the same result. Im posting here because I searched google far and wide and have come up with nothing. Anyone know whats going on here?
I was copying over a SD card via the SD Card read to my internal hard drive. Half way through it froze. And it wouldn't let me do anything. I removed the memory card and all I or was a spinning rainbow circle. Â So I powered off the MacBook manually (holding power button). Â When it started up again it came to the apple logo. And froze. So like a idiot I manually powered off the MacBook again. Â Next time it booted it showed me the stop sign.I tried to boot from cd (holding C while laptop starts), the disk spins but ends up hanging on a White screen. Â Now I don't mind reinstalling OS x over it. But I just need one folder from It. Is there anyway I can connect this MacBook to my mac pro browse the MacBook internal hard drive and copy over the folder I need?Â

I have Windows 8.1 installed on my 500GB LaCie external HDD and I am trying to boot my mac from it. I haven't had any success. Thus far, I am able to get to the Startup Menu from holding the option key and Windows does show up. However, when I try to boot it, it says "No Bootable Device Found." Â
the hard drive has Windows 8.1 installed on it. It is not a drive to install Windows through Boot Camp.Â
Ok so my macbook just froze up on me, and I shut it off manually. However, when I tried to start it back up it would not boot up. I am just receiving a message telling me " You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. "I did what the message told me to do, and when I started the computer back up I just received the same exact message. I tried to take the battery out and hold down the power button to discharge any electricity in the laptop, and then I plugged in the power cable with the battery still out, and I am still receiving the same error message.I have tried the same process a couple of times and put the battery back in and then I decided to try inserting the Installation DVD, and it did nothing different then what I have been getting.

My Macbook started up fine at the store, as it has over the past two years. However, after getting home and trying to turn it on, the laptop fails to boot up. It sits at the grey screen with the Apple-logo and spinning progress circle, all while the fan starts to whirl as if my macbook were on fire. I've experienced a failed hard-drive before, so I know of the folder w/question mark screen, and this screen is not like that. I've also tried booting up in "Safe-Mode," but that won't work as well. I do have a start-up disk and external hard-drive... I'm just curious to see what other options I might have before reinstalling Leopard.

He recently reinstalled OS X Lion but now every time he boots his computer he ALWAYS gets the option to chose Macintosh HD or Lion Recovery disk. I'm tech savy but I've tried resetting the PRAM and everything else I culd think of but he still gets that same screen. He is not pressing the option key when booting it just does it automaticlly. Should I do reinstall OS X Lion aain for him or just take it back to Apple and have them look at it?
