MacBook Pro :: Boot From External Firewire DVD / Optibay-Boot Camp?

Oct 13, 2010

Is it possible to boot from an external Firewire DVD Drive? It certainly isnt from an external USB DVD. Real answers only please, not "I think so" ones based on HDDs or rumours you may have heard!...

Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.

Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...

MacBook Pro :: Switching The Boot Drive (want To Boot From The Optibay) How Can This Be Done

Mar 28, 2010

I run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).

I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp 3.2 Update Uninstalls Boot Camp On 2006?

Nov 21, 2010

In retrospect, I should have ignored it when Apple Software Update told me about the Boot Camp 3.2 upgrade for my 2006 Mac Pro running x64 Win 7 ultimate. When I ran it, it overwrote my blue tooth driver and my keyboard stopped working. Thanks for the folks at Mac Rumors forums, I was able to go through the procedure to get it working again, and I also had to update the video driver (again) from ATI for my 3800.

So then I decide to reboot into MacOS and discover that my icon for selecting the boot disk was gone, not to mention any directory or programs in the start menu. This happen to anyone else? Do I have to downgrade to 3.1 or does anyone have a recommendation to get 3.2 working?

MacBook Air :: Install Boot Camp Without External Superdrive?

Feb 21, 2008

I think this has been talked before but I can't find any good answers.

I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional (limited space, otherwise I'd use vista.. boo @ vista. haha) as a boot camp partition. Problem, I didn't fork out the $99 external superdrive. The good news, I did borrow a external DVD drive from my friend. I plug it in, it boots, but it gets a blue screen saying "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" or something along that line. Ok, no luck there.

I tried using the Parallels method. I created an ISO image, booted from it, installed XP into the Boot Camp Partition through Parallels, but once the transfer's finished, it tries to boot off the Hard Drive and it just hangs. (Total install isn't even completed.)

MacBook Pro :: 2 HDs Via Optibay, How To Set Primary Boot Drive

Jan 3, 2011

I installed a second HD in my Macbook Pro via Optibay.1st drive is SSD and second "normal" HD for data. When I boot I get a strange loop with the apple logo appearing and disappearing. It looks like my Mac does not know which of the two drives to choose for booting. Only when I press the options button before booting do I get the Bootcamp selector for Mac or Win which are both on the SSD.

As I use the second drive only for data, I want to make the SSD drive the "primary boot drive" without me having to press the option button on startup every time.

Aug 3, 2010

I just did the whole SSD/optibay upgrade, and now i have a question about booting from the SSD.I used CCC to clone my HD to the new SSD. After it was cloned, I installed the drives into my macbook pro, placing the SSD in the original HD bay, and the old HD into the optibay. When i turned on my computer, i think my laptop was still booting from the old HD. How do i set things so that i boot from the new SSD? I plan to use the old HD for music/movies/documents. OS X :: How To Use External DVD Drive With Boot Camp

Jan 11, 2009

Back on 10.5.5 and below, I was able to install Windows with Boot Camp and my External DVD Drive - My Internal SuperDrive is in the jelly and won't work. But on 10.5.6, Windows decided to give me licensing problems after I tried to use it with VMWare Fusion 2.0. So, in temper I deleted the partition in Boot Camp Assistant.

On the creation of a new, bigger partition for Windows 7 Public Beta, I found that I could no longer use my External DVD Drive to install Windows in Boot Camp.

So, now, Apple has pretty much forced me to come and get the SuperDrive fixed ($65 for a QUOTE, and Over $150 to get the thing fixed) if I want to install Windows onto my Mac.

OS X :: Slow Boot After Installing Windows Vista Using Boot Camp ?

Dec 25, 2008

This is the 1st time i got a Mac , i bought a black Macbook 2.4GHz some days ago .

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp , and all went smoothly .

Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.

And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .

So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.

And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )

OS X :: How To Make Boot Camp OS Selection Default Boot Screen?

Sep 17, 2009

Is there a way to make the Boot Camp menu the default boot screen, as opposed to holding Alt? This is the latest SL release, if that matters.

I know this is possible in some manner, our networked iMacs all do it; they start up and give the option to boot OS X or Windows, with a countdown to boot the default OS. I'd just like the same thing to happen on my MBP.

Windows On Mac :: I7 MBP Won't Load Boot Drivers After Boot Camp

Jul 6, 2010

Have the new 15" MBP with i7 Processor. I had another MBP with a 7200RPM drive and installed drive in the new i7 Mac. Computer was working fine until I installed Windows via Boot Camp. I can't boot to the Mac Partition any more, the partition is there but when you try to boot to it you just see the Apple logo and NO circle. I cannot boot to the install CDs or a bootable external drive. I target disk mode the computer and used another computer to boot using the drive in the i7 unit and it's fine and I can see all the information. I tried booting the i7 into single user mode and saw the following message:

OS X :: Deleted Boot Camp Partition In Disk Utility - No External HD

Jul 18, 2010

I deleted my Boot Camp partition in Disk Utility (as usual, Windows wasn't working and wouldn't fix). I resized my Macintosh HD partition to cover the whole drive and repartitioned. Now Disk Utility says that the partition's capacity is 160 GB and that I've used 40 GB and that 70 GB is available. My Boot Camp partition was 50 GB. I've read that to fix it I have to boot from my install DVD, go to Disk Utility, set the number of partitions to one, and delete the entire drive so that there's zero data left. Then I'd reinstall OS X and restore from a Time Machine backup. As of now, I have no external hard drive.

Windows On Mac :: Want To Boot Through Both Boot Camp Or Parallels?

Jul 20, 2009

I just installed Windows XP to a Boot Camp Partition on my MBP. However, rebooting is a hassle and naturally I want to avoid doing such as often as possible. I think running Parallels Desktop would suit my needs quite well. But here's the catch: I want to be able to use one partition to serve both of those needs. In other words I want have the option of booting through both Boot Camp or Parallels.

How would I go about doing this? I already have a XP installed via Boot Camp. So if there is a method where I don't have to reinstall, great, but I am fine with deleting stuff.

Windows On Mac :: HDD Optibay - Un Mounting Drive On Boot

Jan 14, 2010

I installed a x25-m, of course, transfering the HDD to the optibay. Here is my problem: Whenever I shutdown, restart or hibernate, I hear, right as the fans shutoff, a loud, almost sharp click. It is obviously the HDD. As many of us know,(that have this set up, or have read the optibay thread) this "hard shutdown" is probably due to the lack of sudden motion sensor for the HDD in the optibay setup. What to do, what to do...especially considering the fact that I boot frequently between Win 7 and OS X. Well, after some research on the interwebs, I have come to the conclusion that ejecting the poor thing prior to shutdown, much like any external device, nets a happy HDD. In the process I came to the conclusion that there should be some automation to this, and sure enough, in terminal, you can augment the volume to not mount on boot. It is a beautifully simple process as noted in this post: [URL] This is all very good news, except that I've only found a solution for OSX. I was expecting to find an equally elegant process in windows. Lo and behold, the process, script and/or command are/is evading me. If anyone out there is on a similar path, could they be so bold as to link their findings? Possibly we could collaborate to right this terrible wrong. To specify, I am hoping to make it so that the drive in question is never "mounted" until chosen to do so, hopefully something similar to the approach in OSX.
