How to get the sound back on a computer?
For some reason, the volume and sound has stopped on my macbook pro. When I hit the volume key, a circle appears with a line across it, but still no sound.

I have a MacBook Air and one day I lost the sound all together. I had tried to bring it back from the keyboard but it seems to be locked and cannot unlock it. Then I went to check on the sound in the system preferences and it is not showing anything either.

I have just purchased a set of logitech x-530 speakers to go with my 2010 MBP. It was a bit of a rushed buy without much research and as such I have realised that the computer doesn't seem to have the appropriate soundcard to produce 5.1 sound (is this correct). this has happened a few times in recent weeks. I lock the screen on my MBP (mid 2009) and go do something for a few minutes. When I come back, the computer won't come back on. I have to hold down the power button for ~10 seconds and shut the computer down hard and then power it back on. What the heck is going on here?

My question is i want to restart the computer back to factory defauls as it still has old users info and userid. they did not give me any back up disk or anything to restore the machine with. This is my first mac computer and i bought it to sync with my ipad and use for entertainment. Right now it won't let me open itunes because i need to download quicktime 7.7. I feel like im lost and i just want to start from scratch.

When I try to adjust the volume a no entry sign appears (a circle with the line through it), but when I turn my computer on it still makes the bong noise so obviously the sound isn't totally broken. Then foolishly I decided to rename the little house icon folder from the previous owner's name to mine. Now when I use my log-in a clean desktop comes up. In the user's folder is the house icon folder with the previous owner's name, and a folder with my name. All my documents are in that folder, so I haven't lost anything.
