PowerPC :: Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz - Sound Card Needed For 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers?

Jul 24, 2008

I'm pretty new here, though I posted over a year ago here with a few questions as a beginning switcher. My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.

OS X :: All Fonts Deactivated But Available In Applications

Mar 22, 2010

I'm currently running snow leopard and I use Fontagent Pro 4 to manage my fonts. For some reason, even though all of my fonts are deactivated in FA, they are all available in Microsoft Office and CS4 applications! With ~3000 fonts, you can imagine that these applications take a while to start up (especially office - CS4 apps tend to be a bit speedier). I've tried everything I can find on - cleaning font caches, etc.

Software :: Pages Deactivated After 90 Seconds

May 21, 2009

For the past 3-4 days what ever program I am using has the same problem. After 90 seconds or so, all the icons on the desktop disappear, then reappear. At the same time I find I am in the Finder and have to select the page I was working on. This occurs when I am online or disconnected from the web, and applies to all programs. I am operating a 17" G4 iMac with OS 10.4.11 and Firefox. I have rebooted cpu and modem, run usual diagnostics including TechTool and disconnected printer, scanner and tablet with no change. My guess is that my power supply is "flickering" though I get no error messages or other clues. I use a UPS/surge protector. Could this be a sortware glitch? or should I give up, get someone to pull the hard drive and buy a new imac? This deactivation has occurred at least 6 times while I composed this message.

OS X :: PowerMac Wont Restart / USB Ports Deactivated

Sep 23, 2008

My G4 PowerMac QS 733 running 10.5 wont restart. My daughter says it was going when she used it, but that a message came up that the USB port which had the mouse in it was being deactivated because it was drawing too much power. I think the mouses cord was damaged. She moved the mouse around the ports, and the computer deactivated them all and then shut it self down!

I have tried plugging in other keyboards and another mouse, but to no avail. I have unplugged everything, including power. Now the when I try to restart, the start up light on both the screen and tower just flash as if the Mac is asleep, but the Mac doesnt start up and I get no start up tone.

Windows On Mac :: Monitor / Keyboard Deactivated While Gaming

Jun 15, 2009

I'm running a Mac Pro with 4GB RAM, 512MB of Video RAM, 2 dual core 2.66GHz processors (or more, not completely sure but I know it's at least 2.66GHz). I recently installed Windows 7 using bootcamp, and so far it has disappointed me by actually being good.... something I'm not used to when dealing with windows. Anyway, the OS runs fine for almost everything with the exception of video games. I've only installed one game on it (Oblivion) but for whatever reason at seemingly random time intervals (only when playing the game) the monitor turns off and can't be turned on without a restart, and the keyboard and mouse can no longer input. I can hear the sound playing fine (in fact on multiple occasions I heard myself being killed), but no video and no input.

I have to restart the computer by forcing a shutdown (holding the power button) in order to get input back. I'm not sure if this issue is strictly windows, as it sometimes happens whenever I play EVE when booted into Mac. I'm fairly confident that it's not my graphics card, because if it were, why would mouse and keyboard functions be disabled? I've tried playing around with the games settings (highest possible settings, disabling HDR/Bloom, low settings, ini tweaks, etc) but it makes no difference on the result. Every time, without fail, the monitor turns off, keyboard and mouse stop working, and I am forced to restart. Again, I'm not sure this is strictly a Windows 7 issue as it has happened before when gaming on my Mac. But on the Mac it's a very rare occurrence, it's happening consistently on the Windows partition.

System Specs:
Mac OS X 10.5.7
Windows 7 Build 7100
2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT

All drivers up to date on both operating systems.

OS X :: USB Port Drawing Too Much Power - The Device That Is Plugged Into It Will Be Deactivated

I get this strange message every so often, sometimes more often than other times. It says:

USB port drawing too much power. The device that is plugged into it will be deactivated.

There are only two things plugged into the USB-The keyboard and mouse. When I get this message, the mouse freezes. If I jiggle the mouse cable where it is plugged into the USB, it comes back and everything is fine until this message comes up again.

Software :: Spilled Water On Mac - Broken Sound / Get It Back?

I recently spilled water on my mac. It seemed to recover but then I realized the sound has stopped working. When I try to adjust the volume a no entry sign appears (a circle with the line through it), but when I turn my computer on it still makes the bong noise so obviously the sound isn't totally broken. Any advice as to how I could get my sound back? I've tried going to sound through system preferences but had no success.

PowerPC :: No Sound On Powerbook G4?

Oct 21, 2008

A friend of mine is having trouble with her 13" Powerbook G4 running Leopard. When you click the volume and mute buttons the volume overlay appears and all the bars are off and there is a "cancel" (circle with a slash) icon under it. In the sound preferences there doesn't appear to be any options under "output" It's empty. Any takers? I've never seen anything like this before. It's like the computer thinks there's no sound card on it. I haven't tried repairing permissions yet, I'll tell her to try that tomorrow.

I check in sounds in the System Preferences and it states that there is not an output device. The system profiles shows the sound card.

PowerPC :: 2 Sound Outputs On Powermac G5

Apr 24, 2010

So quick backstory my father is the owner of a club and i'm the dj and we are trying to replace our ancient and now broken dj computers with a not so ancient (but still old) dual PM G5 that ive had lying around for a couple years not doing much. We have a couple reasons for doing this and sadly most are for aesthetics because i must admit putting this case in the front booth just adds a bit of class to the whole thing.Well now to my problem/question.Is there anyway to make two different channels come out of the outputs, cause right now if i hook it up one digital and one analog it plays the same sound out of both which well, i can't do. So if thats not possible i guess i could use the pci slots to put a sound card in, but i was also was wondering if anyone knew of a good sound card that worked in this computer.

PowerPC :: Recovering Data Back?

Feb 10, 2010

I have an ibook 10.4. Its my girlfriends she gave it to me to use since my PC broke. She has one of the newer ones. But a lot of her photos were saved in iphoto. So I'm not sure what happened but I restarted the computer and now itunes is reset and iphoto is reset, microsoft word isnt on the computer anymore. Most other files are still there. But I know she is going to kill me for losing all these photos! I bought this digitial picture frame from Brookstones I'm going to put pictures of us on it and send it to her for V-day. It came with a CD to load the software on it. It works with both mac and PC. It was working fine then I went out to the bar for a little bit. I had used the software fine and already uploaded a few photos before the bar. So I come home to reopen the software and its taking forever, the icon is just bouncing up and down. So I restart the computer. When it comes back the dock is larger, itunes and iphoto is reset. WTF happened?! and how can i change it back? I know PC's have that option where you can revert back to an earlier time.

PowerPC :: G4 Screen Goes Blank And Sound Cease

Aug 23, 2006

I've got an 800Mhz iBook G4 (640MB RAM, latest update for Tiger 10.4) which has worked without a hitch for the last 2 years. Suddenly it has started going dead while in use - the screen goes completely blank (although the backlights are still on) and all sounds cease. It doesn't matter if the machine is idle, or playing World of Warcraft, or encoding a DVD in DVD Studio Pro. It is completely random. The only way to get out of it is to hold down the power button to force it to shut down. Powering up is also becoming difficult - 9 times out of 10 the machine boots but I get no startup sound. Instead the screen stays dark and the fan goes on full throttle, and nothing happens. Sometimes I can force it to shut down by holding down the power button, sometimes I need to take the battery out. When the machine does boot and I get back into OS X, sometimes it displays a message saying my clock and time/date are set before 2001 and I may have problems.

I understand this message comes up if you reset the power management unit, but on checking the time/date it is set correct. I have tried resetting the power management unit, but it doesn't make any difference. I have run the hardware test CD, and all items pass on the extended test. The iBook's battery is almost dead - this I know! But would that make any difference? With the time/date error that sometimes comes up on restart, it's almost like the internal battery that stores data like the time has run flat. Is this charged by the big battery? I haven't booted into open firmware, but I've read I can run the reset -nvram and reset-all commands from there (not sure what they do). It's not hardware, as the hardware test CD works. It doesn't seem to be a software error (although I haven't reinstalled OS X). Has my RAM gone bad or become unseated?
