May 13, 2010
I want to change my short name in my Mac. Since I bought it 2nd hand. I have 2 dvd installer. Is it possible to change short name if I will use these DVD installer? I tried changing it but I think I done wrong, so it actually messed up. I do also transferring previous home in my 2nd HDD and renamed it and I did it correctly but still I saw the name under User so I want totally to remove it.

I know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?

I am thinking of buy a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 (E) SSD for my 13" MBP, when I was doing research, I found in OCZ's technology forum that people complaining its lifespan drops a percent for every 3-4 days, so I am worried that if this is true, then it can last only a little bit more than a year, although I can get replacement under 3-years warranty, the time spend for re-installing system and migrate all my files is another problem. Also, I do programming, VM and Photoshop, plus web surfing and music, so there is lots of "writes" involved, I'm afraid it won't last a year.
Furthermore, keep watching its health status while using it is a painful experience as you see it dying slowly, similar to checking Load_Cycle_Count of HDD which is the reason I want to switch to SSD.
Anyone using OCZ SSD or other brands, can you share your experience and advice?

As I was passing around a shop where they sold MBP's of all sizes, I tried them out. Amazingly, every single one of them seemed to freeze when I opened iPhoto, for not a short time. Am I not understanding something about it or is it just freezing?

Background: Air i7 Mid 2011 4gb RAM, 256 SSD, purchased in Aug 2011. Battery life is normally 5.5hours with wifi on, blue tooth off. I charge the battery until status says charged then I unplug until I get the reserve power message at 9%, most days I charge 2 times, sometimes 3 times. When I plug in an external monitor using my thunderbolt to dvi or thunderbolt to hdmi my battery life drops to 2.5-3.5hours (extra work, less battery, makes sense), back left is hot and fan is running. When I have apache web server, mysql, php, netbeans, firefox with over 30 tabs, safari with over 10 tabs, thunderbird, avast antivirus, adium, skype and other random pgms loaded my battery life stayed over 4.5 hours, activity monitor at about 80% idle. The back left corner of the keyboard stays cool during this time.Â
I have read the CPU power and cores are adjusted automatically based on usage, and this is what I have found to be true with great consistancy. About 1-2 months ago my battery life dropped to about 2.5 hours. I have been trying to figure the cause. At the same time my back left corner of the keyboard is getting hot like I have the external monitor plugged in. The fan is running all the time. I look at the activity monitor and it shows 80%-90% idle. I have been on the phone with support and we tried the SMC reset, but the fan is just doing it's job of cooling the cpu. Apple phone support seemed to feel this was normal, even though I told them the back left of the keyboard was not normally this way. I have narrowed it down to.... the cpu is being told to run harder than before, so where is the mixedup signal? I began this morning reading all the messages here in the disscussions this am (and there are many with the same description), many references to activity monitor.Â
[URL]- the activity monitor in this will show the process that is using the cpu the most. In my case I had installed HP scanner software 2 months ago, which is badly written and very misbehaved, see the following link. This process would go to 100% cpu every few seconds (not all the time, so I could not see it in the summary, ), shown when I sorted by cpu % usage.Â
[URL]I have removed my scanner drivers. My battery life is back to 5.5hr, back left of keyboard is cool to touch, and the fan is off. My findings, when the back left of the keyboard is hot, the CPU is running hard. External monitors heat up the cpu. Activity monitor can tell you what is using the cpu, by sorting by %cpu usage (don't trust the summary, look at the individual processes, as shown in the link TS1473) and watching for 10-30 seconds, a misbehaved app may not be at the top all the time.

I just got a new MBP i7, and whenever the graphics switch from the Nvidia 330m chip to the Intel chip, the screen "flickers" black for a short moment before reappearing. Can anyone with a new MBP comment on this behavior? It doesn't happen on the switch from Intel->Nvidia, just the other way around.

I recently clean installed 10.5. I setup iChat with both AIM and Google Talk. Everything was running fine until now. When I start up iChat, the program logs in and out really fast until I receive this error message. "Could not connect to AIM... You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again." This happens over and over again.

My short user name was "nic"I wanted it to be a capital. So "Nic"I'm OCD on things like this >.<" I couldn't help myself.[I'm one of those people that hasn't go a single file out of place and whose iTunes library is perfect]I Went to System Prefs > Accounts > Right Click on the account in questionAnd changed short name to "Nic"HOWEVER, I left the home directory as /users/nic thinking it wouldn't matter as it was only a case change.

My iTunes used to work fine, but today it started doing this. Whenever I'll play a song (this affects probably 1/5 songs), it'll start normally. Then, when there are about 30 seconds left, it'll skip to the next song without playing the last 30 seconds.Â

I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.
