OS X :: Changed Short Name In 10.6, Password Rejected?
Sep 19, 2009
My short user name was "nic"I wanted it to be a capital. So "Nic"I'm OCD on things like this >.<" I couldn't help myself.[I'm one of those people that hasn't go a single file out of place and whose iTunes library is perfect]I Went to System Prefs > Accounts > Right Click on the account in questionAnd changed short name to "Nic"HOWEVER, I left the home directory as /users/nic thinking it wouldn't matter as it was only a case change.
I changed the short name of my home directory oblivious to the consequences. I have searched the internet high and low and have found a few threads already posted (including an Apple support article) that relate directly to this issue. However, although the root of the problem is the same in that I changed the short name, the outcome is slightly different and I can't restore all my preferences in the manner detailed in these articles. I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11. Here is exactly what I did and what is going on:
1. I went into Get Info. in the home directory icon in Finder. Say the original name was john, I changed it to Fred.
2. Since then, when I open any applications such as Skype, iTunes, iCalendar etc. all of the settings have been reverted to default making it appear as if I've only bought the Mac. However all my documents and music files are still there and can be accessed normally in the newly named directory. My desktop and widgets are also fine.
3. Now when I go to Macintosh HD and click into users there are 3 things: - The newly named home directory Fred with the house icon. - A folder with the old home directory's name, that being john. Inside there are Documents, Library, Music and Pictures folders but only the Library folder seems to contain anything important, which I hope are all my preferences. The other three are effectively empty. Like I said I can access my music files etc. normally. - Lastly the shared folder.
I haven't turned off or restarted my laptop because reading on threads it appears as if I can cause damage or end up not being able to access my mac. The two solutions I've found online are these: [URL]. The problem with this one for me is that I can't rename the new directory with the old name - it just won't let me. [URL]. The problem with this solution and another I found is that I think they are assuming the old directory - john - is in fact still a directory but in my case it is a folder.
I changed my short name and rebooted, and when I logged back in, all of my preferences and settings were gone. I have found my old library, which I'm assuming has all of my settings (it has all of the files from my old user account), but don't know how to transfer that to the new account name.
I'm currently locked out of my Power Mac G5. While trying to install the latest Java for Mac OS x 10.5 Update 6 from Software Update, my admin. password was rejected as invalid. When I try to change my password in Accounts, my old password is rejected. I've entered this password a thousand times, and, yeah, I'm slightly senile, but caps lock isn't on.
Ok I've just bought a lovely new Macbook pro, this afternoon. I'm trying toy download some software. The new Mac is rejecting my password. Can I look up what the password is on my old mac or my i-phone.In fact to log in here I had to put in my password which has been accepted so how come it won't accept it when I try and down load some software (Adobe flash player)
So the mail on my macbook just suddenly stopped being able to receive or send anything, everytime I open mail I get a pop up box saying:
The SMTP server [URL]rejected the password for user schreiber16
re-enter your password, or cancel.
So I enter my password but the box keeps popping up.
when it comes to this sort of stuff, and Google tells me that it may be something to do with my ISP.. but I'm at a loss how to fix it. I did a search and there have been others with the same problem as me, but most of them said the problem fixed itself, whereas mine hasn't after a couple of weeks.
Out of the blue my wifes mac mail password was asked and everytime it is rejectedI have searched but couldnt find anything online to assist in fixing this
Every few minutes, my Mail rejects my Hotmail password and says "The Hotmail POP serverrejected the password for user ______". I looked it up on google and apparently hotmail may be set up to reject passwords or deny POP access if the polling rate is too fast... I'm not sure what's going on. I click "remember password in keychain" every time but it pops up every hour at least.
I changed my password in iCloud & now Mail in Snow Leopard rejects the new one (including old ones I have used). All other products (iPad2, iPhone4 & iCloud) are fine. I restored using Time Machine, Backup & even reinstalled Snow Leopard using original DVD. Even deleted mobile me account in preferences then restored from older backup.

I can't access my iCloud email on my Mac mail, Get it on iphone but not Mac mail on computers, The iCloud IMAP server “p02-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for use
Why do i keep getting the following on my imac 27" when it does not happen on my ipad or macbook air? "The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user " Getting very frustrated with it. I have tried removing the account and repacing and also changing the password. It is not the password entry that is the problem. Any solutions? All software up to date.
I am getting this message "The iCloud IMAP server "p99-imap.mail.me.com" rejected the password for user ...". I am getting mail fine on my iphone and Ipad, just not thru MAIL.
I canceled by mobile.me account and now I am getting this message when I open my mail. Enter password for account "smtp.me.com:xxx". SMTP server "smtp.me.com" rejected the password for user "xxx". I try to put my mobile.me password, but that does not seem to work. I am fairly new to Mac OS and cant seem to figure out what is going on.
The MobileMe IMAP server "mail.me.com" rejected the password for user "yanperdrau". This is the message that keep on coming every time I try to retrieve my email, the password is well inserted, and my settings are good.
In order to make my wireless internet network secure, I added a password to it today. Every other computer in the house, as well as my XBox 360, is able to connect to the internet using the password that I set up. For some reason, when I try to connect to my Macbook, it tells me that the password is wrong, yet it works with the other 3 computers in my house. What am I missing? Do I need to change my settings on Airport? My wireless router is obviously working so what do I need to do?
I am using Macbook Pro (OS Lion), unable to send/receive emails. I have reset all settings (no help). Problem is temporarily resolved by logging into webmail but then issue returns once Apple Mail app is shut down and then re-opened. Server tech support (Rogers/Yahoo) says that the mail client keeps sending the wrong password so the account gets locked out. I have changed the password and re-entered all the mail settings?
So this morning I changed my OS X password and didn't write it down anywhere. It was something pretty random, and I don't know if I'd even recognize it if I thought of it. I know, I know, I'm an idiot and didn't do anything right here. I'm the only user on this computer, don't have a master password set up, and don't have my install disc for another month and a half (due to my AmeriCorps program I'm moving around a lot and didn't bring it traveling with me). Is there anything I can do short of taking it to an Apple Store?
I just got my Mac back from the shop. I left my login password with them so they could go in, fix it, and do what they have to do. Now that I have it back, the following things have changed:
- My account, started by me protected by that password, now AUTOMATICALLY logs in at startup. - They created a new account, known as 'Other...' - The login password, which I've always used, no longer works when I need to unlock settings changes.
Is there a circumstance under which a 'login' keychain would be missing? I thought it was created by default using the user's login password and was unlocked when they logged in. I'm working (long distance) with a friend who's having Keychain problems and can't seem to work this one out. He's got an iMac running 10.4.11. He recently changed his admin password (I don't know why) and Keychain stopped working. Easy enough, run Keychain First Aid. He says that this reports no problems, but the only keychains he has are 'system', 'microsoft_intermediate_certificates', and 'x509 anchors'. This is where I get lost.
I cannot log into my account after having changed my password on the internet. I tried entering that same password on my computer mail account, but it won't work.
