Aug 31, 2010I was talking on skype. I attempted to open microsoft messenger for mac. It froze up the video on skype, but I could still hear the person I was talking to. Microsoft messenger failed to open, so I clicked okay on the error box.
A few minutes later skype froze up and I could no longer hear or see the person I was talking to. My mac was unresponsive and I could not get anything to close so I held the power button and shut it down. I waited for a few minutes and tried to re-boot. It took a few minutes and was still trying to boot, so I went and took a shower. I came back and it was fully booted, yet running very slow. Every application I tried to open would not open fully, I had to force quit anything I tried to open. Even "Finder" wasn't responding and had to be re-launched. As it stands now, I can't stand to try to even use my Mac because it runs so slow, and will not open any applications.

Mar 28, 2012MBP/Lion - I'm using my MBP in dual monitor mode with an external monitor and power supply connected. If I close the lid and then disconnect the monitor, my MBP won't wake after opening the lid. I know that with Lion a change was made and the power stays on with an external monitor attached and the lid closed (with the adapter plugged in), but if you unplug the display, there doesn't seem a way out of this state. Even plugging the monitor back in, the display wont refresh In this state the power managment is confused. When closed, the power light is on, with the lid opened the power light goes off, the display remains blank and I can't wake the device. The only solution is to re-boot. as I just want to close the lid, unplug power and the monitor and leave work to go home. I end up running the battery down if I don't catch it before putting the MBP in my bag, and I always have to reboot.

May 29, 2012I have a macbook air and everything was working fine until all of a sudden my computer froze. I then rebooted my computer by holding down the power key because it would not allow me to open or close any programs. After i rebooted whenever i open safari, itunes, or ichat the computer freezes. i don't know what is going on because firefox and other programs seem to be working fine but certrain programs i open freezes up the computer. the dock stops working and the clock does not even run. i am able to move the mouse around but i can not click and open or close anything.

typing 'mac-boot' gets me to a white screen with black lines all down it. It just hangs there.
I tried zapping the PRAM but it didn't help. The hard drive has been making those *click click* 'I'm about to die' sounds for a while. I'm assuming its the hard disk . I have another iBook with a failed logic board I can take the HD out of but in case its not I don't want to take it apart just yet.

Sep 2, 2009Is there a way to disable the �pinch open and close� feature on a MBP trackpad? I swear, it�s going to put me in therapy. Every time I need to scroll through massive spreadsheets for work, if my fingers separate by even a hair, the trackpad reads it as a pinch, then the document suddenly balloons to massive proportion or shrinks to infinitesimally tiny print. Seems there ought to be a simple way to turn the thing off, but for the life of me, I can�t find it.

Aug 2, 2010I have an iBook G4 which was working fine. A week ago my little sister used the laptop and now I have the following problem:
a) The laptop boots because I get the boot chime, but the screen keeps black.
b) I connected an external monitor to check if the problem was the laptop monitor. When I start the computer, I get a gray screen (in the external monitor), but no apple icon () and cannot pass from this gray screen.
c) I noticed that the caps lock light was not turning on, so I accessed the open firmware (keeping hold the power button - getting a weird chime and a light flashing near the case button - power chime ) and I got the open firmware screen (still in the external monitor) and I noticed that the keyboard was not working also! I connected an external keyboard (usb) and I am able to type.
I know I won't be able to use it as a normal computer because of this weird problem. I was thinking to keep it as a "desktop" with the external monitor and the external keyboard. My questions in this case are:
a) Is it there any way I can boot from cd from open firmware? (I cannot do the "keep the 'C' key hold during start up" because my laptop keyboard does not work.
b) Because I get the open firmware console, could this be a OS problem? What I mean is that if I reinstall the OS, could I at least keep using this computer as a desktop?

Mar 6, 2009Most programs in OS X stay open when you close them (when you click the red X button) unless you specifically close them from the dock. I think Safari 3 used to have this functionality but now when I close Safari, it "quits" as in all my open tabs are closed. However Safari stays open.

For example I have been working on my music files lately and I often want to get information about the size of the selected music files or music folders. But when I select them I don't get one screen telling me how big the selected files all together are, but a screen will open for every single file or folder. So you need to calculate it by yourself in order to get the total sum. Is there a way to avoid this? Then another thing: I can't find a function for closing all the open screens at once. Is there a way how I could close them all at once, because now I need to close them all separately. Like a couple of days ago I accidentally opened something which contains like 100 folders or more even. When I found it out, I couldn't stop it anymore and all the screens started to open. I had to close all the more than 100 screens one by one.

Mar 23, 2009Apple thinks there is no need for a button on the tower. Now I can't open or close the CD tray without the mouse. Via right click I can open it at least but to close it, I have to push the drawer, which I'm not a big fan of, as the machine is brand new and cost me 4k.

May 25, 2009Due to my fingers tripping over themselves I accidentally double clicked and opened a bunch of stuff, about 50 files in all. Annoying but doable to manually close them. However, suppose I had accidentally opened 500 or 5,000 or 50,000? Hopefully I wont ever do this , but if I did Is there a way to get back to a 'clean' screen by killing these, perhaps even 'kill everything that opened in the last 5 minutes', or is logoff or even a restart the only realistic way

Oct 8, 2009First, I am fully aware of the two plug-ins that have both of these features. SafariStand and Glims. I'd prefer not to use SafariStand, and I don't want to use Glims (buggy). I'm not here to debate their merits. The features I want are for Safari's download manager to close automatically, and for all links to automatically open in new tabs.
What I'm wondering is: are there any other plug-ins that offer these features for Safari 4 running Snow Leopard? Are there any tweaks to the system that don't involve plug-ins? As in, are there some terminal commands that can emulate these settings somehow?

MacBook :: Boots Fine But Not From CD
Jun 2, 2014I have a white macbook that has been starting to act a little slow. I put avast on it and found some old files that were windows files received in emails that had never been deleted (i.e. so these weren't issues and so viruses were not the problem).
I did a repair disk permissions and it gave the usual long list of java changes. I did a verify disk, and it found errors. So I put the CD that came with the macbook into the drive in order to start from it and run disk utility.
The macbook will not boot from the cd. The drive is fine and the computer boots up fine using the HDD. I did try running the hardware test but it said the version is not compatible (maybe these aren't the disks that came with the macbook??) So I booted up normally and tried even to run disk utility from the CD and it said it was the wrong version as well.
I researched the internet and saw target disk mode but this old white macbook doesn't have a firewire port. So I just hooked up a carbon copy clone of my desktop from a USB harddrive and was able to boot from that and run disk utility to fix the errors. So the disk errors are fixed and disk verify shows no errors.
However, my only outstanding issue is that I cannot boot from the CD drive. If I'm on the road and don't have the usb drive and have trouble with regular boot I will not be able to boot until I get home. I have upgraded the OS since I purchased the macbook but only to 10.6. Do I need a 10.6 startup CD as opposed to the one that originally came with the mac?

Sep 6, 2009I have an older style MBP, 2.2, running 10.4.3, and the other day after using it about an hour I put it to sleep. After another hour or so I opened it to use it again. Usually just opening it will wake it from sleep. It didnt so I tried pressing any buttons, no luck. Held the power button til it turned off. Tried to boot up but the screen stayed black and the sleep light went on, but did not pulsate. Tried that a few times with the same result. I also tried hooking up an external monitor, just got "no signal".

Jul 1, 2010A few days ago my macbook froze, when I did a hard reboot it boots to bluescreen. I've even left it up overnight just in case it was talking awhile.
Here is what I've tried so far:
-boot into safemode, holding in shift does nothing.
-Tried to run disk utility, it said something like it couldn't be done (forgot the exact message)
-reinstall the OS from cd, but holding in c causes it to reboot.
-holding option and clicking the cd to boot from causes a reboot also
-command-option-shift-delete does nothing
-Gone into single user mode done the fsck thing, also tried this [URL]
Starting to think the HDD is shot. Just noticed an error when I type in /sbin/fsck -fy it says "Incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub it should be 16 instead of 17. Not sure if that means anything. Was able to run disk utility now, no errors were found however it still will only boot to blue screen.
OS X :: Macbook Pro Boots With A Black Screen?
Aug 8, 2010Just about 2 hour ago I put my mac on standby because I had to do some homework, but after I finished my work and opened up my computer, the screen was black. I then resetted the computer by holding the power button down but still nothing.
The computer makes all the sounds like it normally does, it does the chime aswell. However, when I close the computer up the front light isn't pulsating, its just glowing. While my computer's screen is black I can adjust the sound (it makes the noises) and I can adjust the backlit keyboard brightness, but it doesnt respond to trying to light up the desktop. I've tried to shine a light to the desktop but can't see anything.
I've tried looking at some similar posts, tried to reset it up by holding cmd+opt+p+r.. nothing works. I can't understand this... it was working just fine only hours ago
EDIT: after leaving it for 10 minutes, the front light started pulsating as normal again, but when I open it up, black screen still.
