Dec 16, 2009I am getting a 2008 Mac Pro and i need a wifi card for it. Should i just get one from OWC or does anyone know of one better or a better option?

Nov 12, 2009ven an everyday user may consider such a card if the price is within budget which currently isn't. It isn't targeted at gamers who need every ounce of performance though.
It appears to be geared towards Apple since it debuted with onboard DisplayPorts. However, it should be noted on their specs page that the system requirements currently do not list any version of Mac OSes. Matrox do list Linux support though. IMac :: Interference Between Airport Card / Wifi - Graphic Card
Apr 24, 2009How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.

Oct 8, 2008I want to ask about spec-ing a Pro with a decent graphics card for games. While it's not the only thing I will use the computer for, it will be one of it's main uses. Is it better to get one with the default 2600 and then buy a more recent Windows graphics card like an ATI 4870 and use boot camp? If I do this can I buy any PC/Windows card and keep both in so that Vista will use the PC one and OSX will use the 2600? I don't want to have to switch things around internally every time I boot to a different OS. Or should I just BTO the Nvidia 8800GT and keep things simple? As far as I can tell the 8800GT should give decent performance, at least for another few months..

Aug 10, 2010I have an original, stock Mac Pro (August 2006), which has performed flawlessly until yesterday. It seems to start up fine (I can hear the usual hard drive spinning sounds, but my display (Apple 23" LCD) is now totally blank (black). The power light on the display is lit (and I've verified that the display still works by connecting it to my MacBook Pro), so I can only assume that the graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 7300GT) has died. What are my options as far as replacing this card nowadays? I don't play games on my Mac Pro, but I do use it for Photoshop and iMovie and also to watch QT videos and DVDs (as well as browsing the internet, of course). I should add that I have zero experience with installing graphics cards, but I'm comfortable with getting into the machine and doing simple things like adding memory and additional hard drives.

Apr 14, 2010I find the printing options are a little dry. Whenever I attempt to print something online or from Preview the only options that are available to me is selecting the number of copies, the page ranges, etc. (after clicking the blue arrow).

The network does show up, then I enter the password and it keeps saying "password is incorrect". Hardware :: Finding 2TB External Hdd Options - Which Is Best
Jul 14, 2009As I only have a MacBook I am looking at Firewire 400 solutions, at least for the main drive, and have narrowed it down to these options:
1) MyBook Home II 2TB - This is the 2TB version of what I have now, so it would become my main drive. My Current one will then become the backup drive, along with the pair of 500GB drives onto which it is currently backed up. [Cost: �196.59]
2) MyBook Studio II 2TB - The same as the above option, except it contains 2x 1TB drives in a RAID 0 configuration. Although stripping offers no resiliency, it is no worse than the single drive solution. [Cost: �195.09]
3) A pair of MyBook Home II 1TB - One would just simply be the backup for the other. [Cost: �185.28]
4) MyBook Home II 1TB plus WD Elements 1TB - As a backup drive the Elements would only be connected when syncing, so I can accept it being USB only. It would be faster to sync than connecting it over the same firewire connection anyway. [Cost: �161.60]
The last option is simply being considered because it is the cheapest. It, along with option 3, is also a 'collect in store' option so I could get it today without waiting on shipping
Otherwise though there is not much price difference between the first three options, I am just not sure which is best way of going: single drive, stripped drives, or physically separate drives?
Option 3 should be more resilient as one drive failure will not affect the other half. But it means another device to plug in, both to the mains and my single firewire connection, and will take up more space.
Incidentally, although I could set the Studio to work in RAID 1 and essentially act as its own backup, I want to be able to keep the backups in a different location to the main drive so this is not an option.
MacBook Pro :: Finding Options For 500 GB - 7200 Rpm Hdd?
Aug 20, 2009Is the Seagate (with built-in drop protection) the only option for a 500 Gb, 7200 rpm drive? I bought a 15" MBP a few weeks ago and opted for the 5400 rpm drive since I heard there were lots of problems with the 7200 rpm drive. I see Apple released a patch recently for the 7200 rpm drive, but it sounds as if it's not a 100% solution (Apple says it "reduces" the problem). Are there any 500 Gb, 7200 rpm drives that are recommended (and don't have redundant built-in drop protection)? I can tell my drive is a bottleneck.

After I got it I noticed the system requirements only list Windows.For the **** of it I installed it in my Power Mac. The system seems to recognize it in "About This Mac..." as a "Serial Controller". There appear to be serial ports assigned to it: /dev/cu.pci-serial3a.When I try to run a serial terminal program over this port (connected to some known working hardware) I get gibberish. I've checked out the cable and remote hardware on another machine and it works fine.

OS X :: Video Card Options - Green Corruption And Fail To Boot The System?
Oct 24, 2009Normally I build my own machines, but this time around I needed final cut for some projects so I went all out and bought a nice mac pro about a year ago to use primarily as a gaming machine, with final-cut-pro video editing on the side. I've only done a couple FCP edits on the machine and as a result, have mostly used the PC side of things (via bootcamp) and play a game a few times a week on average (Team fortress 2 and FFXI etc). It's run beautifully, easily the best purchase I've ever made.Today is the first day I've had any serious issue with the machine. Having grown up building gaming computers, I am familiar with the corruption (most notably the 'green' corruption that stands out) associated with video cards. Last night I popped on a game called Dragonica that my fiance is into, she needed a hand with some boss thing, so even though I'm not super into it I hopped on. Before I knew it, the screen flickered green-colored-corruption for a second, then locked up. I restarted, thinking its probably a fluke, and before I could get all the way back in, it did it again. I turned off the machine and went to bed (had work in the morning).

Mar 30, 2010I'm running a PowerBook G4 15" FW800 (running 10.4.11) which has only ever connected to the internet via an Orinoco WiFi card, and I'm trying to upgrade it to a better card whose signals aren't stopped by a couple inches of walls. So I bought an AirPort Extreme card on Ebay and hooked it up, but it's not working right. I'm hoping for some advice. Note that I don't have an AirPort base station; I have a Linksys router, which the Orinoco card was able to communicate with fine. Anyway, I got the AirPort Extreme card (no software CD included), and hooked it up as demonstrated in this video. My laptop already had some AirPort software on it, which refused to acknowledge the existence of the card.
I then I installed the software available here, which seemed to overwrite the previous set of software; I also ran Software Update. No matter what, the laptop refused to acknowledge the existence of the card. Applications->AirPort Utility, AirPort Admin Utility, and AirPort Disk Utility all turn up blanks. AirPort Utility, for example, just says it's "unable to find any Apple wireless devices". The software that was there before I installed the software linked to above gave a different message. if I do get the laptop to recognize the card, will I even be able to connect to the Linksys without an AirPort base station or something?
