If I bought the cheapest iMac at base model right now, in a month or two could I buy more RAM for it? Then could I later buy a better video/graphics card and get that put in And could I have these things done by official Apple peoples. Not that I care much - I'd just like to know if official people do this.

Its hard to explain, what it looks like so I was able to capture a video of it on my iPhone, it happens near the end of the boot cycle; Here's a link to the video; [URL:...] I've tried clearing the PRAM etc and no luck. The iMac will be two years old this August, I don't have AppleCare. Do you think the video card is dying?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to ask about spec-ing a Pro with a decent graphics card for games. While it's not the only thing I will use the computer for, it will be one of it's main uses. Is it better to get one with the default 2600 and then buy a more recent Windows graphics card like an ATI 4870 and use boot camp? If I do this can I buy any PC/Windows card and keep both in so that Vista will use the PC one and OSX will use the 2600? I don't want to have to switch things around internally every time I boot to a different OS. Or should I just BTO the Nvidia 8800GT and keep things simple? As far as I can tell the 8800GT should give decent performance, at least for another few months..
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have an original, stock Mac Pro (August 2006), which has performed flawlessly until yesterday. It seems to start up fine (I can hear the usual hard drive spinning sounds, but my display (Apple 23" LCD) is now totally blank (black). The power light on the display is lit (and I've verified that the display still works by connecting it to my MacBook Pro), so I can only assume that the graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 7300GT) has died. What are my options as far as replacing this card nowadays? I don't play games on my Mac Pro, but I do use it for Photoshop and iMovie and also to watch QT videos and DVDs (as well as browsing the internet, of course). I should add that I have zero experience with installing graphics cards, but I'm comfortable with getting into the machine and doing simple things like adding memory and additional hard drives.

ven an everyday user may consider such a card if the price is within budget which currently isn't. It isn't targeted at gamers who need every ounce of performance though.
It appears to be geared towards Apple since it debuted with onboard DisplayPorts. However, it should be noted on their specs page that the system requirements currently do not list any version of Mac OSes. Matrox do list Linux support though. Do note that they didn't leave out regular DVI users. Direct Link for more details on the specs.
I have a year old MacBook Pro with an Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT card.
I recently bought Unity but it turns out the Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT graphics card isn't fully supported because of a memory leak which is a problem with the drivers.
Unity Support have told me to update my drivers. I understood Mac drivers were always built in to the OS and no drivers were available from Nvidea but I see they now have one Mac driver for another card.
What is the actual state of affairs with this graphics card does anyone know? There have been a lot of reports of faulty ones and now this.
This is a just about year old top of the range MacBook Pro and it doesn't support graphics??

I got my early 2008 2.8 Octo mainly for photoshop and photo editing. I added 8gb ram and a couple of 1TB hd's.
Now I want to do some video editing in Final Cut Pro in the near future. Is my stock 2600 card good enough or should I get a better card?
Normally I build my own machines, but this time around I needed final cut for some projects so I went all out and bought a nice mac pro about a year ago to use primarily as a gaming machine, with final-cut-pro video editing on the side. I've only done a couple FCP edits on the machine and as a result, have mostly used the PC side of things (via bootcamp) and play a game a few times a week on average (Team fortress 2 and FFXI etc). It's run beautifully, easily the best purchase I've ever made.Today is the first day I've had any serious issue with the machine. Having grown up building gaming computers, I am familiar with the corruption (most notably the 'green' corruption that stands out) associated with video cards. Last night I popped on a game called Dragonica that my fiance is into, she needed a hand with some boss thing, so even though I'm not super into it I hopped on. Before I knew it, the screen flickered green-colored-corruption for a second, then locked up. I restarted, thinking its probably a fluke, and before I could get all the way back in, it did it again. I turned off the machine and went to bed (had work in the morning).

The card I have in my 2.16GHz 24" iMac (purchased Sep '06), NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, is indeed ready to die. I found some articles that said the graphics card is easily upgradable in my iMac. I will be editing photos using aperture or some other photo editor, running Vuze nonstop, 12 tab browsing, and also probably watching a movie. My G5 ALS imac did that with about 3 tab browsing pretty easy. Also it wasnt editing photos. ANYWAYS. Amazon has the i5 for 1972.98 and applecare for 135.99 for a total of 2108.97

It appears to have moderate yellowing on the bottom 1/3 of the screen so thinking about returning it today when I go to the Apple Store for my broken iphone. I installed USB Overdrive (a program), I clicked on restart and my iMac never got up. When I start it, the HDD and fans do work. But there is no boot sound, and when I change sound levels, I cannot hear it. I think, it never makes it to OSX. It does not load the OS. I dont think it is Graphics card (HD2600) failure.
When I try to reset PRAM, nothing happens. Usually I must hear it restart again with loud boot sound but it never happens. Also my keyboard does not seem to work, as the CAPSLOCK button does not light up, when pressed. I changed RAM to different moduls, still the same. I checked the iMac RAM on a different computer, it works. Maybe USB Overdrive killed the USB slots? As my USB keyboard does not seem to work

Now here's a question for the pros: now that the graphics have been updated for the 27inch (from Radeon HD 4850 to 5750) are some of these problems solved?
I'm planning on doing a lot of work in Avid, Final Cut, and Pro Tools, and I want to get to know After Effects well.
Will 8GB of Ram be enough for me?
Most of my editing will be off of footage from my 5D Mark ii.
