Hardware :: Finding 2TB External Hdd Options - Which Is Best

Jul 14, 2009

As I only have a MacBook I am looking at Firewire 400 solutions, at least for the main drive, and have narrowed it down to these options:

1) MyBook Home II 2TB - This is the 2TB version of what I have now, so it would become my main drive. My Current one will then become the backup drive, along with the pair of 500GB drives onto which it is currently backed up. [Cost: 196.59]

2) MyBook Studio II 2TB - The same as the above option, except it contains 2x 1TB drives in a RAID 0 configuration. Although stripping offers no resiliency, it is no worse than the single drive solution. [Cost: 195.09]

3) A pair of MyBook Home II 1TB - One would just simply be the backup for the other. [Cost: 185.28]

4) MyBook Home II 1TB plus WD Elements 1TB - As a backup drive the Elements would only be connected when syncing, so I can accept it being USB only. It would be faster to sync than connecting it over the same firewire connection anyway. [Cost: 161.60]

The last option is simply being considered because it is the cheapest. It, along with option 3, is also a 'collect in store' option so I could get it today without waiting on shipping

Otherwise though there is not much price difference between the first three options, I am just not sure which is best way of going: single drive, stripped drives, or physically separate drives?

Option 3 should be more resilient as one drive failure will not affect the other half. But it means another device to plug in, both to the mains and my single firewire connection, and will take up more space.

Incidentally, although I could set the Studio to work in RAID 1 and essentially act as its own backup, I want to be able to keep the backups in a different location to the main drive so this is not an option.

OS X :: Finding More Printing Options

Apr 14, 2010

I find the printing options are a little dry. Whenever I attempt to print something online or from Preview the only options that are available to me is selecting the number of copies, the page ranges, etc. (after clicking the blue arrow).

how to easily select specific pages to print or even just selecting options like "Even pages only" or "Odd pages only"?

MacBook Pro :: External HDD Dock Options - Internal HDD For External Use

Jul 16, 2009

A few months ago I bought the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive adapter. I was going to purchase my first laptop and knew there would be drives I could take from my G4. This was my first real experience with USB 2.0 and boy do I hate it. I do mostly video editing and I very regularly transfer huge amounts of data from drive to drive. USB 2.0 waaaaay too slow compared to what I was used to. Hours to transfer 40Gbs. I now regret not getting a FireWire enclosure. How does everyone feel about those HDD docks that take SATA drives? To me it seems very economical. I understand a smaller bus powered drive would be good for travel because a dock or larger drive needs a power source.

MacBook Pro :: Finding Options For 500 GB - 7200 Rpm Hdd?

Aug 20, 2009

Is the Seagate (with built-in drop protection) the only option for a 500 Gb, 7200 rpm drive? I bought a 15" MBP a few weeks ago and opted for the 5400 rpm drive since I heard there were lots of problems with the 7200 rpm drive. I see Apple released a patch recently for the 7200 rpm drive, but it sounds as if it's not a 100% solution (Apple says it "reduces" the problem). Are there any 500 Gb, 7200 rpm drives that are recommended (and don't have redundant built-in drop protection)? I can tell my drive is a bottleneck.

Mac Pro :: Finding Displays And Graphics Card Options For Matrox M9188

Nov 12, 2009

ven an everyday user may consider such a card if the price is within budget which currently isn't. It isn't targeted at gamers who need every ounce of performance though.

It appears to be geared towards Apple since it debuted with onboard DisplayPorts. However, it should be noted on their specs page that the system requirements currently do not list any version of Mac OSes. Matrox do list Linux support though. Do note that they didn't leave out regular DVI users. Direct Link for more details on the specs.

However, when I use the mini-DVI to VGA adapter and, obviously, a VGA cable into my tv I get some weird results. (I have tried using DVI-HDMI but I have nonstop compatibility issues with the tv, so thats out of the question, VGA works fine and is good enough quality for me) When using the tv as a second monitor, it works without fault, as long as my Macbook is open and awake.

IMac :: Won't Work With External Hard Drive Hook Up Options

Aug 24, 2010

After debating the need vs. want of the iMac and Mac Pro, I'm going to follow my brain and go with the iMac (27" i7) since I use it for work, though my work is in the business side of the music industry dealing more with email, spreadsheets and some minor music/photo/video editing (which is easily done for me via Apple`s iLife).

My real question is with the 3 external hard drives I want to buy - G Tech 1TB G Drives. I read about daisy chaining the drives, which sounds like a good idea. But am curious about it. Obviously if I have 3 external HDD's and want to use FW800 on all three of them, with only one FW800 on my computer, daisy chaining solves the problem. But in this set-up, what is the potential downside to this? Is there an upside or other reason(s) people daisy chain their drives, too?

I`ll use the iMac's HDD, of course. But I also need one HDD for work (important files, contracts, etc). One for personal (music, photo, video). And lastly, one as a back-up for the other HDD's.

What would my BEST and also cost effective option be? Buy 3 externals and daisy chain them? Use eSata (what would that entail)? Increased speed would be the only major plus I'm looking for with setting these HDD's up. Just not sure all my options...

But keep in mind I don`t need them to mirror each other. HDD 1 (iMac) has my minor importance stuff. HDD 2 has my work files and business stuff. HDD 3 is personal photos, videos and massive iTunes collection (300gb). And HDD 4 is a back-up of all the others. Raid seems to be not exactly what I need - perhaps overkill on cost, too. What do you think? Also, I know everyone has their taste in externals. I actually had great reliability in Western Digitals MyBook Studios, and My Passbooks. But some people I know had good time with the G Tech`s - aside from them looking cool.

Despite the cost i really want one, they look cool and im looking for 1TB of space. Ive read the reviews on the apple store website and there littered with stories of failure after 18 months, if this is the case im not spending ?230 for this to happen.

Applications :: Finding ITunes "import" Options?

Jan 29, 2009

What happened to iTunes? Recently it's just been getting on my nerves and I'm wanting to permanently uninstall it. I have found some wonderful free alternatives!

What happened to the Advanced Options that allowed me to change what I wanted all my music files to be stored as? It used to be I could convert all my library to mp3's (128 kbps). I want to do that know but there is no option.

I have a bunch of DRM'ed music I want to remove the DRM from and convert to mp3. I usually do this by burning it to a CD and ripping it. Now iTunes is giving me nonsense about "You don't have the right to burn due to copyright issues" or something like that. And, also, I have been trying to figure out how to get around iTunes nonsense, so I keep on making new library files and it tells me "You have authorized 4 out of 5 computers" when I only play my music on one computer.... (That is if iPods don't count)

So if anyone could help me with this DRM nonsense (please do not tell me to waste 70 bucks on music I already have) or converting all my music to mp3's that'd be great.

Hardware :: External HDD - Finding Guide

Dec 16, 2010

Having had a WD MyBook go bad after a couple of years, I am looking for a replacement. One priority is a longer warranty than the weak 1year offered by WD. However, since I fear that all data on this drive is lost, I also want to see if there is a better solution. Is there any advantage to FireWire over USB2.0?

One solution I am considering is an inexpensive NAS drive with two drives setup in a RAID (an example would be the Sabio Storage 2-Bay NAS Enclosure (CM200) - sold by MacMall.) Would this setup be more likely to safeguard my data?
