OS X :: MSI Wind - Install Onto U100 WITHOUT Replacing Wifi Built In Card?
Dec 9, 2008
Don't scorch me for asking, because I haven't seen this topic, so I'll ask. Is there anyway to install OS X onto the U100 WITHOUT replacing the wi-fi card built in? Isn't there a driver you can install or something?

How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.

For reasons I would rather not get into, let's say that I had to stop using my built-in wireless card and had to switch to a USB adapter. Let's also say that the driver for the Asus & Hawking adapters (both re-packaged versions of the same crap) are buggy as hell and cause system panics when large memory consumers + crappy network driver are both in use (iTunes or RSync over the wireless).

this isn't a should I get a macbook pro now or wait etc. I want to wait until January or even before next may to see what all the updates are to the laptops. In the meantime however I would like to have a notebook to go along with my PC that I built already. I'm torn between getting a used powerbook 12" and the new MSI wind. I like the bigger screen and can hopefully grab a good one off of ebay for around 500-600 but I am not sure about buying an used laptop.
The MSI wind also looks really neat as far as portability but I really want my first Mac. What should I go for? I plan on using these just for wordprocessing, internet surfing and just basic travel stuff. Also would the intel atom chip in the Wind be more powerful than the G4 chip in the powerbook?

I have a 1.25 ghz g4 powerbook along with a macbook. I only use the powerbook to watch movies on my tv and I'm thinking about selling it and getting an MSI wind. I know there are some differences like a lack of a graphics card but my main question is which processor is faster for everyday use (internet, video playback)? Is a 1.6 atom significantly faster than a 1.25ghz G4?

9to5 suggests that installing OS X on an MSI Wind is both legal and easy. Their links to instructions for this machine aren't too clear. If it is legal, seems like a great Xmas gift for the 3 year-old who only knows OS X, but whom we would prefer be on her own machine.

Does anyone know if the Software Instruments that GarageBand provides will be compatible with MIDI Wind Controllers such as the Yamaha WX5? These instruments use continuous breath control as opposed to the velocity/aftertouch and envelopes more appropriate to keyboardand percussion instruments.

I move into my new place next week and find that the only source of internet will have to be through a wireless router. So now I am need of a Airport card. I have a 2005 iMac G5 (the generation right before the built-in iSight). I know that I need a Airport Extreme Card and an antenna, but I was wondering if somebody could fill me in on the exact part numbers I need for iMac. I've seen lots of different airport cards and do not want to buy the wrong one. If anyone can help me, that would be great.

I'm running a PowerBook G4 15" FW800 (running 10.4.11) which has only ever connected to the internet via an Orinoco WiFi card, and I'm trying to upgrade it to a better card whose signals aren't stopped by a couple inches of walls. So I bought an AirPort Extreme card on Ebay and hooked it up, but it's not working right. I'm hoping for some advice. Note that I don't have an AirPort base station; I have a Linksys router, which the Orinoco card was able to communicate with fine. Anyway, I got the AirPort Extreme card (no software CD included), and hooked it up as demonstrated in this video. My laptop already had some AirPort software on it, which refused to acknowledge the existence of the card.
I then I installed the software available here, which seemed to overwrite the previous set of software; I also ran Software Update. No matter what, the laptop refused to acknowledge the existence of the card. Applications->AirPort Utility, AirPort Admin Utility, and AirPort Disk Utility all turn up blanks. AirPort Utility, for example, just says it's "unable to find any Apple wireless devices". The software that was there before I installed the software linked to above gave a different message. if I do get the laptop to recognize the card, will I even be able to connect to the Linksys without an AirPort base station or something?

I have the aluminum iMac from around 2007 and the WiFi card seems to not be functioning correctly. It seems to time out often and is non-responsive many times. When it is working, it only gets about 1/4 the speed of what my macbook is getting.

I have an old sawtooth and like many people find the prices of the original airport card to be a bit inflated.
I read that lucent Wavelan silver, bronze, gold cards are backwards compatible with the original Airport specs.
Does anyone know if this works for certain? If it does, I'd like to pick one up cheap from ebay and stick it in my Sawtooth.

I need a wifi card for my MacBook Pro (preferably N, but G is OK), and an ExpressCard version seems the best choice, however I'm having a really hard time finding one in stores, much less one that I know is Mac compatible. It seems the PC-world's reluctance to move on from PCMCIA is slowing down progress in this area.
There must be an expressCard wifi card out there that works with a MBP running leopard. Does anyone know of one?

So, I got the Polycarbonate Macbook , Parallels 5, and Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed windows on bootcamp and had parallels use the partition for windows and I got it all working, all the drivers on Windows are great, except the wifi. It's not even saying I've got a wireless card installed, it won't recognize that I have one in my Mac. But when I use parallels and when I boot it as a regular Mac, it works great. I've looked around and haven't found an answer to this? Anyone found a solution or could help?

I've had this computer for many years and it has been trouble free. Recently, however, it's been losing the wifi signal. It'll keep it for a while, but then I'll see it fluctuate and eventually die. I can't seem to bring it back to life. I have an iPhone, apple tv and a laptop that all seem to have no trouble pickng up the wifi signal. Would this be a software or hardware issue? Could my airport card be dying? If so, is it fixable?

I recently had WiFi installed on my MacPro 2006. It is not a PCI card, it is wired to the board (I had to take the box in to a registered dealer have this installed).
I have a very weak signal and can't even open a webpage. It's attempts to load, but fails intermittently.
I can connect to my NAS or other network shares, but they are very, very slow.
I am no more than about 15 meters from the Timecapsule, two rooms away.
My Macbook has a perfect signal (very strong) at the same spot and operates as if I were right next to wireless router (1TB Timecapsule). I also have a Dell laptop that has a very strong connection.
The WiFi in the MacPro is as good as useless. I cannot move the router as it runs off a cable modem and I only have one cable connection in the apartment. I also don't want to have ethernet cables running all over the place.

So tomorrow I'm going to be getting a Powerbook G4 from a friend. He says there are two problems with it.
1. The Graphics. I haven't seen it personally, but he says every time the laptop starts up, the display has a bunch of parallel vertical lines running down it. Is this a hardware issue, and is it easy to replace? Or can an update fix it? I wonder because isn't the integrated graphics mounted on the logic board?
2. The WiFi Card. I remember the day he got it, we both say the WiFi worked like a charm. One day, it pooped out on us. Now, the only way for internet is by ethernet. Did something possibly unhook from it, or is it a bad card? Once again, a possible update for it?
I won't know for certain until I get this laptop tomorrow. I will post updates when I can physically check it out. Also, this laptop is an older one, so no warranty or AppleCare on it. It is also running Leopard, but I doubt it is updated to the latest.

I was just running 'sudo port install git-core +bash_completion' on my new mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15". All dependencies where fetched perfectly until it was about to fetch the distfiles for "curl-ca-bundle". It tried to fetch "curl-7.26.0.tar.bz2" from 10 different locations, but failed on every. From then on, my WiFi dropped and I get connection timeouts for every WiFi I try to access.
