View 1 RepliesHow certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running a PowerBook G4 15" FW800 (running 10.4.11) which has only ever connected to the internet via an Orinoco WiFi card, and I'm trying to upgrade it to a better card whose signals aren't stopped by a couple inches of walls. So I bought an AirPort Extreme card on Ebay and hooked it up, but it's not working right. I'm hoping for some advice. Note that I don't have an AirPort base station; I have a Linksys router, which the Orinoco card was able to communicate with fine. Anyway, I got the AirPort Extreme card (no software CD included), and hooked it up as demonstrated in this video. My laptop already had some AirPort software on it, which refused to acknowledge the existence of the card.
I then I installed the software available here, which seemed to overwrite the previous set of software; I also ran Software Update. No matter what, the laptop refused to acknowledge the existence of the card. Applications->AirPort Utility, AirPort Admin Utility, and AirPort Disk Utility all turn up blanks. AirPort Utility, for example, just says it's "unable to find any Apple wireless devices". The software that was there before I installed the software linked to above gave a different message. if I do get the laptop to recognize the card, will I even be able to connect to the Linksys without an AirPort base station or something?
I have a 2008 Mac Pro. I am wondering whether its a better idea to go for a WiFi internal card,or is it better to get the airport extreme for wireless internet with router? My knowledge of WiFi/setup is quite limited.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had this computer for many years and it has been trouble free. Recently, however, it's been losing the wifi signal. It'll keep it for a while, but then I'll see it fluctuate and eventually die. I can't seem to bring it back to life. I have an iPhone, apple tv and a laptop that all seem to have no trouble pickng up the wifi signal. Would this be a software or hardware issue? Could my airport card be dying? If so, is it fixable?

I recently had WiFi installed on my MacPro 2006. It is not a PCI card, it is wired to the board (I had to take the box in to a registered dealer have this installed).
I have a very weak signal and can't even open a webpage. It's attempts to load, but fails intermittently.
I can connect to my NAS or other network shares, but they are very, very slow.
I am no more than about 15 meters from the Timecapsule, two rooms away.
My Macbook has a perfect signal (very strong) at the same spot and operates as if I were right next to wireless router (1TB Timecapsule). I also have a Dell laptop that has a very strong connection.
The WiFi in the MacPro is as good as useless. I cannot move the router as it runs off a cable modem and I only have one cable connection in the apartment. I also don't want to have ethernet cables running all over the place.
Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat is the quickest way to check my internet connection speed in Tiger? On a PC, I've always known it's as simple as hovering the cursor over the connection icon in the taskbar. It's been like that at least since XP if not earlier. In OSX though (Tiger at least) the Airport icon in the menubar doesn't give any of that information.

View 2 Replies View Relatedpretty set on getting a single processor Mac Pro, 2.8 in the standard configuration.my dual 1.8G5 died a few weeks back, and as patient as i'd like to be about waiting for a new Mac Pro, i don't think i can wait until June...of course, if i *knew* it were march, i might be able to, but who knows...it's all a matter of rolling the dice.my question is this: is it worth spending the extra $150 (or slightly discounted) on the 8880GT video card in terms of "future usage"?i am not a gamer nor need great video power for my things (i do photoshop but no video editing, etc.)
However, i note that a new 8800GT costs in the 230+ range and i wonder aloud if i'm better off buying it now and being set for the life of the machine.my plan/hope: i will keep this machine, just like i did my old Powermac, for hopefully 4-6 years (assuming it doesn't die...if my G5 hadn't died, i'd still be happily using it for another year or two).or should i wait...and maybe a couple of years down the road, buy a faster video card for about the same $150 (or will such a thing be available once new Mac Pros come out)?
Following the death of my dual G4 867mhz system, I have been left with an IBM T42 laptop for the last few months on which to work (feel free to Google if you're curious about the stats).
I can't honestly say that I care much for the iMacs and the Mac Pros are beyond my budget so it looks like I'll be going with the next revision of the Macbook Pro.
I've reviewed the Apple website and I'm interested in the high-end 15 inch with the dual video card setup with 512MB of VRAM. What I am not pleased with, however, is that it is also configured with additional RAM and HDD space; both of which Apple charges a premium for.
My line of thinking is that I'll purchase the other two components from third party vendors as add-ons for the base configuration and upgrade the video card either at the Apple store or elsewhere - assuming it's practical.
My question then, can the video card in the Macbook Pro be upgraded?

I have a white plastic late 2007 macbook running Snow Leopard. I've set it up to wake up during nights and download. Everything works fine but every now and then when my macbook wakes up from sleep it won't connect to my wifi and when I get up in the morning to check the downloads, I get disappointed. This happens at least twice a week.I need an app or an apple script which constantly monitors and ensures that Airport is always connected to wifi after macbook wakes up from sleep. Airport doesn't seem to do this automatically.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy ISP went belly up 2 days ago and once I hardwired my Macbook pro into my modem I was off and running again. However, I have been having trouble connecting to the Internet for the last couple of days wirelessly. I have shut everything down and rebooted, several times, but as soon as I turn on my wireless I loose my connection to the Internet. I have a technician coming to check my Optus modem tomorrow. To complicate the matter, when I arrived at work today the same thing happened with my computer and the connection to the Internet. My airport utility says I am not connected to the Internet where as every other computer at work is.
Now with an Ethernet cable connected I am able to connect to the Internet. From this I deduce there may be something wrong the wireless card in my own Macbook pro. How do I check this out and what steps can I take to remedy the situation?

I bought my Mac Pro as a refurb from Apple, but it didn't come with the wireless card built in. This didn't bother me because at my old apartment my computer was near the router so I just wired it up by ethernet. I just moved into a new place and my computer isn't within router distance and I don't want to run a bunch of cable. My boss gave me a card to plug into Apple wifi card spot and OSX found the card and showed some airport info, but it didn't find any networks and if I run the Airport Utility it says it can't find an airport card. So I assume it's not compatible. What are my options? Oh yeah, I found this on ebay. Sound reliable? [URL:....]

I could understand losing some speed going from wifi to internet sharing, but I also get 8-9 mbps download results on my netbook.
