Jun 29, 2009I have never ever seen a picture of a Mac Pro with any of the two drive bays open, when/how do they open ?

Mac Pro :: 09 Hard Drive Bays?
Feb 21, 2010I have a 08 MP and i love it except the drive bays. Removing a drive is a bitch and frankly ends up hurting my fingers by the time it lunges out of the plug. I am wondering if there is a way to use the larger drive bay holders on the 09 MP on my 08. Also how did they add the extra room for these larger drive bays for more finger room.

Dec 2, 2008Looking at blu-ray drives, I thought of an interesting question, and I just wanted to know if anyone knows the answer...why was an older standard used for the MacPro's optical bays, especially when the HDs use SATA? And I know the motherboard has sata ports, so that's not my issue. It's just kind of a pain having to use an adapter or run a cable to the motherboard if I want to use a sata blu-ray drive for example.

Nov 13, 2009I just placed an order for a 2.93 Quad core, a 640gb HD in bay 1, 6gb ram with a 4870 card(didn't want to buy and flash my own as this mac pro is a gift from a friend). I really want to get a 128 SSD as OS and app drive, but can't afford it. So I will just stick with the 640gb. I will most likely raid 0 two 1gb disks in bay 2 and 3 as a scratch disk for FCP, would it be a good idea to put my aperture library on there as well for faster speed? I have around 113gb of photos in my aperture library currently. Finally, I will use bay 4 as a back up for the OS and apps. I have a drobo for data storage.

Mar 20, 2009I have just got a refurbished 2.8 Octo from Apple. I was glad at the first minute as it comes with an expected 16M-cache 500G HD (instead of 8M-cache 320G), as well as airport extreme card installed without additional charge. But at the same time I find out that both hard drive bays 3 and 4 are not working when I connect another three 3rd-party HDs to the machine internally. While at the same time, the original HD in bay 1 and bay 2 (which is hosting one of the three 3rd-party HDs) are working properly. Is there anything I have ignored and I should perform now to enable bay 3 and 4. Or, should I call Apple now to claim a DOA and request a replacement?

I ran 2x750 F1s in Raid0 and was happy with performance; now I'm thinking of running 3 of these in Raid0 with the last reserve for backup but I also have an external FW for backups. Should I run all 4 of them in Raid0? I can keep my data on the external so no fear of a crash.

Sep 24, 2008does anyone know how to open the DVD drive manually. It won't open if I hold down the mouse button when I turn it on. I had problems trying to install XP in Boot Camp and had to turn off the machine. Now the windows disc is stuck inside that wants to install windows each time I turn it on. It is no good holding down the options key either.

Pressing the eject button on the kyb doesnt do it. The eject button on the actual drive is covered by the plastic tab of the mirror metal.
The new Itunes doesnt have an eject button that I can see, either.I dont see any "eject disk" button in any of the utilities.

Pressing the Eject key on the keyboard does not open the DVD tray. Usually the Eject symbol appears briefly on the screen and then the tray will extend. But, this is not working at all. I've reset the PRAM, but still the problem persists.
Going to About this Mac shows that the system "sees" the DVD drive, I just can't the the tray to extend. There is no DVD or CD in the drive at this time.

Power Mac G5 :: CD Drive Door Won't Open?
Dec 6, 2007I'm having a problem getting my CD drive door to open (the CD drive was empty when the problem started). Have tried pushing and holding down keyboard eject key, holding down mouse key while restarting, and typing "eject cd" in open format. When I do these things, the drive repeatedly makes a sort of "grunt" (effort noise) but doesn't pop open, so this appears to be a mechanical problem. I removed the drive faceplate and was finally able to open the drive by pushing the manual eject button and pulling on the tray, though it requires some finagling and doesn't always work. When the tray does open this way, it does not automatically roll all the way out or back in, but has to be pulled/pushed, and once it shuts, it once more can't open without manual intervention. However, I discovered that as long as there's a CD in the tray, it opens and closes fine. While always keeping a CD in the drive is a temporary fix.

Power Mac G5 :: Lookig For Another Way To Open The Drive Tray?
Nov 1, 2007I use a G5 Powermac at work that is hooked to a KVM switch that seems to render the eject key inoperable. Is there another way to open the drive tray so I don't have to unplug the KVM switch and hook the keyboard directly to the mac every time I need to insert a CD?

Nov 26, 2006I retrofitted a Toshiba dvd/cdrw 2512 in my indigo ibook, following instructions found online. Opens fine with f12 key, and drilled hole for paperclip eject if need. Plays dvds and burns cds great (patchburn installed to burn from itunes too). But, the drive also opens when the ibook is turned on and when it comes out of sleep. Is this a glitch that can be fixed. Not a big deal but would like to have it not open if possible.
