I have a Mac Pro that's kernel panicking upon boot. I was going to try seeing if I could repair it before just reinstalling the OS, but I can't get the DVD drive to open. I have a Logitech Wave keyboard, but pressing the eject key combo isn't working (presumably since drivers for it aren't loaded).
View 7 RepliesI've been hearing good things about the Spinpoint Drives and the 750GB ones are coming down in price.Here is my current setup1 - 500MB Drive - Leopard2 - 320MB Drive - Vista 643 - 500MB Drive - FAT32 (Shared, Irrelevant)I plan on replacing drives 1 and 2 with 750GB Spinpoint drives.My question is, can I boot off of the Leopard dvd and put in Drive 1 and NewDrive1 and just clone it, and do the same for Drive2 and NewDrive2 and clone it? And then go into Leopard and resize the HFS partition, and go into Vista and resize the NTFS partition?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

Last week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly. It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there.  However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore? Holding down the Option key is getting old.Â

I decided that I couldn't wait for Gainestown and ordered a 2.8x8 MP today. I'm going to get another 8GB of RAM (I assume 10GB in matched pairs will still perform at full speed). My real dilemma is a Boot/Storage solution-I'm moving from a Dual 867 G4, so all my current drives, both internal and external are IDE, which basically means I'm starting over as far as internal drives goes. The G4 power supply gave out so I'm getting this external enclosure to put my old drives into for file recovery. As far as new drives go, I can't figure out what to do. I'll spare you my million iterations of drive configs I've sketched over the past two days.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).
I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)
I have a iMac G3. I can't make it boot from the CD to install the OS. Keep pressing the C key, but no luck. How can I edit it in open firmware to make it boot from the CD? Or, is there another option to install the OS from a different Mac? I have Mac OS X installed on a PC.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two WD 640gigs and the stock WD 500, and I am having trouble deciding on the the optimum configuration. I am open to suggestions. I use my computer for general use as well as for my video editing and graphic design hobbies if that info helps.
I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?
My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it? Â

I thought I would ask in case this situation arises. I'm not using a Mac keyboard and there is no eject button on my keyboard. It's a G4 with mirrored doors but I don't see any buttons to eject the tray.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I'm still having trouble with the MacBook I posted about here. It kernel panics even more frequently now, a month later, about once every 30 minutes. I'm running 10.5.8 now (no Snow Leopard for me!).
Anyway, the problem I'm posting about is that I can't boot into Open Firmware. It works fine just booting straight through to OS X (except about a third of the time I start up it kernel panics right after the Apple logo appears) but it won't boot into Open Firmware. I hold down Command-Option-O-F to no avail and it just won't go. (I'm trying to do reset-all to see if that helps any.)
I tried booting into Open Firmware successfully on my other Mac so it's nothing I'm doing, this MacBook obviously has some serious issues.
I'd rather not have to take this computer to the Apple Store again - every time I do they just reinstall the system/replace the hard drive and don't take me seriously when I say the problem is not with software. (Plus the warranty on this machine is up now and I'm trying to avoid paying hundreds of dollars!)
Anyone know what the issue could be? i really need a new computer hahaha...
Oh! I also tried booting into Open Firmware by holding down the power button continuously as suggested here... the on/off light blinked 3-4 times, the computer made a really long beep (like I was trying to do a firmware update), then started as normally. So I don't think that worked either lol.
I have a dual 1.8 PPC G5 power mac that I bought used about a year ago. It came with OS 10.5 preloaded but the only discs I have for it are the original system disks(10.3). I've got it hooked up to a HP 19 LCD via DVI. The other day I tried to boot into open firmware using the command-option-O-F start up command. Well, something happened cause OS X never came up, but nothing else did either. The screen just stayed blank, the fans starting ramping up and just got gradually louder and louder. I tried entering mac-boot via the keyboard thinking that maybe I was in OF even though I couldn't see anything on screen, but nothing changed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some problems regarding my Hard Disk in a previous topic, I managed to fix the errors and format the drive. The disc seems ok but there is no OS on it.
And when I boot (in verbose or single user mode) it keeps freezing on:

Now this makes sense to me since the drive is empty but when I enter my Installation disc press ALT or C while booting it just freezes and does nothing.
I see the CD next to my hard drive and nothing happens, anybody had this problem before? What should I do, it's just a 5 months old iMac from the latest generation :/.
Here's another speculative question for if/when I get a Mac Pro:I don't forsee myself needing the multiple terrabytes of storage most of you guys seem to have , since I'm still doing OK with just the stock 250GB that came with my G5 Quad + an external 120GB. I'll probably get a 750GB drive for boot, apps, and most files (leaning toward SpinPoint F1 750; the new 640GB WD also seems enticing).So, here's my Q: which would be a better setup for apps like Photoshop as well as the OS (I've read you can relocate the swap file?), performance-wise (both in terms of app speed, and keeping the OS from hanging on a busy disk) - using the slow stock 320GB as a more dedicated scratch disk (possibly just a partition on it, with other partitions for Windows), or using the free space on the faster, but non-dedicated, boot and storage disk?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy iMac (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of Ram; 320 GB hard drive with 160 GB available) running OS 10.6.8 takes almost 10 minutes to boot up. Even opening a file folder can take almost a minute. I reset the PRam last week and that helped but now back to slow. I checked the Activity Monitor and I've got over 3 GB of ram free. Could my hard drive be dying? I have dual backup (external hard drive and Carbonite), so I'm not concerned about losing anything, but need this computer to work like it used too.

I'm still working out the details on purchasing a new MacPro. My Apple sales rep tells me that I can greatly increase the launch speed of applications and the system OS by purchasing 2 hard drives and using Disk Utility to stripe them together into a "software RAID". They claim it will be faster and more reliable than a single SSD. I know I've asked this question before, but the answers were over my head. I don't know anything about SATA raid cards, or SSD's except for their benefits. But I'm pretty sure I can stripe two drives together and make a software RAID.

In trying to add up to a wireless network at home (with a PC and a laptop Windows XP) I switched to "start from network" on System Preferences. On reboot, shows image of file with a ? or flashes a world clip. Usual command+S or C, Alt, attempt to reboot from CD fail. Before attempting anything else I don't want to lose my documents. When reboot with Alt, the padlock with space for password appears. I didn't set a password when I installed OS.
I own a new-generation MacBook Pro, and I'm a computer gamer. While there are some really good games out for the Mac OS (Enemy Engaged, anything by Blizzard), Windows is still where most computer gaming is centered. I don't want to drop $200+ on Windows just to play games (because that's all I'd use it for). So my question is: Is there any free, legal (i.e., open-source) option which can run in boot camp that will reliably play Windows games? I don't care how crude or sophisticated the user interface is, so long as Windows programs (especially IL-2 Sturmovik) run on it and it's free.

It will not boot from any DVD. I have tried to boot from the same disk on another computer and the disk works. Â

on the Mac Pro there is no eject button. You have to use the eject key on the keyboard.

I'm debating getting a 2010 mac pro (probably 3.2 quad) to upgrade from my 1,1 mac pro. I'd like a SSD for apps, and to boot from. But I'd also like the four bays to raid for larger capacity. I have tons of photos, and nearly a 2GB iTunes library.
Just trying to figure out how long I should let this pinwheel go for. It's been about 10 minutes or so. Before booting up for the 1st time I installed both my terabyte drives and 2x2 gigs of ram. Wondering if maybe those are conflicting with the initial set up sequence.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a difficult time finding a guide on how to do this, so I just tried to figure it out the best I could. I originally had a 320 gig standard drive called "Macintosh HD". I ordered one of those new 640 gig WD drives, and put it in slot 2.
I went into Disk Utility, went to "restore", and put my 320 gig as the source drive and the new partition on the 640 (which I also named "Macintosh HD") as the destination, and clicked "restore".
An hour or two goes by, and it says it's done. I turn off the mac, pull out the first drive (the 320) and it boots fine into the 640... I tested Mainstage, Safari, and basically everything seemed to be there. I changed the desktop background so I could tell them apart, put the 320 back in, and when I rebooted, it booted off the 320.
This time I went into System Preferences and changed the startup disk (I guess at this point I should have named the partition something different) and it booted up on the new 640 again.
I'd like to format the 320 but am terrified if I did this all correctly. I plan on using it for boot camp. None of the links I found suggested doing it this way, they all talked about third party utilities.
Anyone here care to help me out? Can I go and format that new drive safely? Is there something I can do to preserve the data (just in case) but take away the boot capability?
