As i am new to Macs I was googling a bit and came across [URL:..]it has a small part about backing up the mac regularly and mentions "Mac Pro users have extra internal drive bays which are even easier." I have a unibody Mac 13", does this have an extra drive bay that i can shove an extra HDD into? I was thinking of a 500gig.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 08 MP and i love it except the drive bays. Removing a drive is a bitch and frankly ends up hurting my fingers by the time it lunges out of the plug. I am wondering if there is a way to use the larger drive bay holders on the 09 MP on my 08. Also how did they add the extra room for these larger drive bays for more finger room.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLooking at blu-ray drives, I thought of an interesting question, and I just wanted to know if anyone knows the answer...why was an older standard used for the MacPro's optical bays, especially when the HDs use SATA? And I know the motherboard has sata ports, so that's not my issue. It's just kind of a pain having to use an adapter or run a cable to the motherboard if I want to use a sata blu-ray drive for example.
View 23 Replies View RelatedI just placed an order for a 2.93 Quad core, a 640gb HD in bay 1, 6gb ram with a 4870 card(didn't want to buy and flash my own as this mac pro is a gift from a friend). I really want to get a 128 SSD as OS and app drive, but can't afford it. So I will just stick with the 640gb. I will most likely raid 0 two 1gb disks in bay 2 and 3 as a scratch disk for FCP, would it be a good idea to put my aperture library on there as well for faster speed? I have around 113gb of photos in my aperture library currently. Finally, I will use bay 4 as a back up for the OS and apps. I have a drobo for data storage.

I was glad at the first minute as it comes with an expected 16M-cache 500G HD (instead of 8M-cache 320G), as well as airport extreme card installed without additional charge. But at the same time I find out that both hard drive bays 3 and 4 are not working when I connect another three 3rd-party HDs to the machine internally. While at the same time, the original HD in bay 1 and bay 2 (which is hosting one of the three 3rd-party HDs) are working properly. Is there anything I have ignored and I should perform now to enable bay 3 and 4. Or, should I call Apple now to claim a DOA and request a replacement?

I just dyed the top case and the bottom case (also the battery cover) all black and I changed the apple to red! It looks really sweet and it matches my backpack... Ok well I just read about a guy that wants to take out his optical drive out and put another hard drive in.
My question is... Would that be possible with my iBook? It is a early 2004 ibook g4 1.07 GHz, 768 MB RAM, and a small 30 gig hard drive! I would love to add more hard drive space without having to go through the hassle of finding a way to transfer all of my data on this hard drive to another!
I eventually opted to buy a new Mac Pro. I would like to install a 5th hard disk into it for windows. I assume this should be much easier than with the old model as I understand the optical drives are now SATA, so routing the cable shouldn't be difficult.
What I would like to know is what kind of brackets would be required to fix a 3.5" HD into a space normally used for a 5.25" optical disk space.
Somewhat new to Macs. Year old aluminum macbook (not pro) with 160 gb hard drive - "Startup disk full" message - Finder says 159 gb used, 1 gb available. I am sure I could delete some software or photos but will run into same problem later. What is the best solution - put a larger hard drive in or can I use an external hard drive for additional storage (how to do this, will this impact performance). I have a 500 gb external hd for backup - can I use this??
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I bought that LG HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drive for my Mac Pro. I used the extra SATA ports near the fan to install it, and it works great while using OSX, but it won't work in Windows.
I read somewhere about enabling AHCI or something like that in Windows so it can recognize the spare SATA port, and therefore recognize the Blu-Ray drive, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me.
It's awful confusing...
I want to be able to rip my Blu-Ray movies onto my computer to pop them onto the tv, but the only hurdle is having Windows recognize the drive. Any help at all would be very appreciated.
Im encountering space issues when erasing the HD free space! I get a popup message saying that i need to free up more space in order to get the job done. I cant remove any more data from the drive in order to make it more spacious for the free space erasing!
Is there a way i can hook up an external drive so that it will use that extra space?
What's the best setup with these parameters? I ran 2x750 F1s in Raid0 and was happy with performance; now I'm thinking of running 3 of these in Raid0 with the last reserve for backup but I also have an external FW for backups. Should I run all 4 of them in Raid0? I can keep my data on the external so no fear of a crash.

I have a Lacie Porsche 160 gb firewire drive, it worked well, I ve had it a couple of years. Now when I plug it in it won't show the disk image on the desktop. system profiler finds it and I have the Lacie upgrade tool and that checks it and says it is up to date. I have tried it on two other macbooks one older, one newer all Leopards, and one imac desktop. They all found it. so it appears to be a problem with my laptop only.
I did use it with time machine but it ran out of space, Using another laptop I have deleted all lot of stuff off it and tried changing its name.
I threw my external hard drive out of the Spotlight Privacy menu by accident, and now I can't get it to show anywhere. What do I do?

I tried plugging my flash drive in to my Macbook today and it won't show up. I've tred it on multiple computers and nothing. I opened it on another computer a couple days ago and it worked just fine I also opened it on my computer about a week ago and it worked perfectly. But now nothing.

How can I make the Hard Drive icon appear on my desktop?

when I went into the "get info" window for the G-Drive and switched the ownership/permissions dropdown from "read/write" to "no access". When I tried to switch it back to read/write, it would say read/write in the dropdown, but then I'd try to access the g-drive and I'd only get to the first set of folders--when I'd click on a folder, there would appear to be nothing in it. (Not sure if this is really related to my current problem.)
I then tried ejecting and remounting the drive, but it didn't show up on my desktop. Stupidly, I assumed my computer didn't recognize it at all and unplugged the firewire without ejecting thru disk utility. When I did this I got the device removal error.
I then plugged the firewire back in and tried repairing the disk in disk utility, but it said it didn't need repair. When I click on the G-Drive in disk utility the info at the bottom says:

0 Files! I'm worried about losing all my stuff! I then tried DiskWarrior (v4.0). When I first opened it I think the info at the bottom said "This disk is a Mac OS Extended disk. This disk does NOT appear on the desktop." I'm not quite sure about that "not" b/c after rebuilding the directory of the G-DRIVE I know it now says "This disk does appear on the desktop." Anyway, it's definitely not appearing on my desktop. After building the directory it said "All file and folder data was easily located. Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicate that there will be changes to the number, the contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders." And later: "19 files (and 2 folders) had a directory entry w/ an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired." And:

(etc)
I then clicked "Replace" whereupon it said it was successfully replace. But still it did not appear on the desktop even after ejecting, remounting, rebooting computer, etc.
If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty desperate here! Thanks!
(FYI I already tried going into the Finder permissions and unclicking and reclicking the box for showing disks on the desktop. Also, I plan on getting DataRescueII in case that's necessary, but i hope it isn't)
The HDD in my wife's black MacBook (2007, I think) won't boot up. I've run Disk Utility and have decided it's pretty much dead. I have a Carbon Copy backup, so the data is fine. I've tried replacing the drive twice now, and the MacBook simply won't "see" the new drives. When I install the drive, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (run either from the install disc or the Carbon Copy backup drive in a USB enclosure).
The new drives are formatted (I even copied the bootable backup to one of them), and the computer sees them just fine if I install them in a USB enclosure and hook them up that way. When I put them in the computer, though, no dice. Her old, corrupted HDD still showed up in Disk Utility when I reinstalled it, but the new drives don't.

The Issue is a duplicate icon of the hard drive appeared on the desktop this AM upon startup.
I don't know what caused it. It just appeared.
It seems to contain everything the start up icon contains when I open it.
I moved it to the trash, but did not erase the trash. I chickened out, so to speak. I removed back to the desktop.
I have the desktop view set to arrange by date modified. It appears approximately half way down the list of icons showing on the desktop. It seems to me that, if it is a duplicate, and by all appearances it is, then it should appear immediately after the real hard drive icon.

I borrowed a friends and switched mine with hers. My acted the same way in her macbook. I switched the cords on the external drives, no change.
Also, Is there a way to retrieve the information from my sick external hard drive?

I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.
Before when I used to view pictures they show up in (from what I can remember) Picture...im not sure what else is missing but after a while they started showing up in colorsync which i didnt like then i deleted it and the pictures started showing up in quicktime. Can someone please tell me what is the application i can download so my pictures start showing up in an application that starts with "Picture" because it takes up less room

Do i go with a 4GB setup 11.6 inch laptop or spend the extra 300 to get. better cpu, better battery life, SD reader and More screen re-estate.I don't want the macbook air to be too fast that it will replace my 2007 macbook (which will soon be a mac-mini 2.4GHZ). How are you guys liking your 13 inch vs the 11.6 inch? I see more people at the mac store going nuts over the 11.6 inch.

I started with 75 GB available before I synced and backed up my iPad and then checked it again after the sync completed and ended up with 67 GB available. I can't figure why I dropped so much storage after everything backed up. I checked my mobile sync folder and can only attribute 2.25 GB as my backup size for my ipad which means I lost an additional 5.75 GB and is being tied up somewhere on my flash drive. Could anyone please give me a suggestion or idea in how I can determine where the extra storage went?

Is there a way to enable a MBPro give more amperage to PSVita like iPad.. As you know when Mac detects and iPad connected to the USB port, it gives extra 1,5 A over 500mA standard USB port.
