Mac Pro :: Best Setup For Parameters - 4 Bays - 4 WD6400AAKS?
Jun 3, 2008
What's the best setup with these parameters? I ran 2x750 F1s in Raid0 and was happy with performance; now I'm thinking of running 3 of these in Raid0 with the last reserve for backup but I also have an external FW for backups. Should I run all 4 of them in Raid0? I can keep my data on the external so no fear of a crash.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the bluetooth parameters in OSX like the sample rate and such?I have Motorola DC800 that works perfectly fine for pairing and playing music from my iPhone but when I try to pair it from my mac it sounds tinny and quiet... I'm wondering if the A2DP settings need tweaked a bit because it's obviously just nowhere near the quality it should be.

I'm dumb and late last night decided to follow the directions in this article:(URL) Using Lingon, I modified the startup parameters of "syslog" from "/usr/sbin/syslogd" to "/usr/sbin/syslogd -c 3 a". Of course by fiddling around with things I shouldnt have, my computer wont boot past the gray apple screen or past "waiting for dsmos" in verbose mode. I would backup from Time Machine, but my most recent backup doesnt have several important large work files that wouldnt fit in my Dropbox. I realize it was stupid to mess around with this without backing up, but feel free to flog away! I've run diskutil, verified/repaired, run fsck -fy from single user mode, reset pram, wont boot to safe mode, etc.
My question: is it possible to edit the startup parameters of "syslog" from the command line in single user mode? If so, how? AND Is it possible to reinstall OS X system files from the boot disc without erasing my entire disk?
EDIT: mpb intel core2duo OSX 10.6.whatever-the-lastest-is

The "sharing' facility to create a DVD from FCPX has no parametrs I can adjust. namely, the poor sound quality and levels. In DVD Pro I could adjust the parametrs for optimum quality, and save that setting for all music video's.Now that DVD Pro is no longer available my only option is to use Compressor and to tweak my settings, but how do I burn the DVD from compressor? The files that Copmpressor and FXPX build will not be imported by iDVD, and I don't actually want to use iDVD and it's templates.

I have a 08 MP and i love it except the drive bays. Removing a drive is a bitch and frankly ends up hurting my fingers by the time it lunges out of the plug. I am wondering if there is a way to use the larger drive bay holders on the 09 MP on my 08. Also how did they add the extra room for these larger drive bays for more finger room.

Looking at blu-ray drives, I thought of an interesting question, and I just wanted to know if anyone knows the answer...why was an older standard used for the MacPro's optical bays, especially when the HDs use SATA? And I know the motherboard has sata ports, so that's not my issue. It's just kind of a pain having to use an adapter or run a cable to the motherboard if I want to use a sata blu-ray drive for example.

As i am new to Macs I was googling a bit and came across [URL:..]it has a small part about backing up the mac regularly and mentions "Mac Pro users have extra internal drive bays which are even easier." I have a unibody Mac 13", does this have an extra drive bay that i can shove an extra HDD into? I was thinking of a 500gig.

I just placed an order for a 2.93 Quad core, a 640gb HD in bay 1, 6gb ram with a 4870 card(didn't want to buy and flash my own as this mac pro is a gift from a friend). I really want to get a 128 SSD as OS and app drive, but can't afford it. So I will just stick with the 640gb. I will most likely raid 0 two 1gb disks in bay 2 and 3 as a scratch disk for FCP, would it be a good idea to put my aperture library on there as well for faster speed? I have around 113gb of photos in my aperture library currently. Finally, I will use bay 4 as a back up for the OS and apps. I have a drobo for data storage.

I have just got a refurbished 2.8 Octo from Apple. I was glad at the first minute as it comes with an expected 16M-cache 500G HD (instead of 8M-cache 320G), as well as airport extreme card installed without additional charge. But at the same time I find out that both hard drive bays 3 and 4 are not working when I connect another three 3rd-party HDs to the machine internally. While at the same time, the original HD in bay 1 and bay 2 (which is hosting one of the three 3rd-party HDs) are working properly. Is there anything I have ignored and I should perform now to enable bay 3 and 4. Or, should I call Apple now to claim a DOA and request a replacement?

My brother is going to start school in June for Film. He is all set to buy a Mac and knows the software side of things but not so much the Hardware side.
I have a few questions:
1. Should extra hard drives be bought third party?
2. Should he do a raid setup for backups?
3. How much memory should he buy for Final Cut operations? (third party)
4. Should he look into getting a Dell monitor instead of Apple? What is a comparable Dell monitor?
5. 4-Core or 8-Core?
6. Any other knowledgeable Mac Pro buying advice

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

I'm trying to connect to Leopard from my XP machine at work and I haven't been able to get it working thus far. Here's what I've tried:
1) Enabled Screen Sharing from the Sharing system panel.
2) Checked to make sure Screen Sharing is listed as being allowed to go through the Firewall.
3) Downloaded both the free version of RealVNC and UltraVNC.
RealVNC 4.1.2 gives me the following error: "No matching security types" UltraVNC 1.04 gives me the error: "Incompatible Version" Has anyone had any success connecting via VNC (w/o ARD installed) from XP? If so, what did they do and what XP VNC client?

I am a fairly new Mac user (2 months) and there is something I'd like to do that I haven't figured out how to do (or even if possible). I'd like to setup something on the Dock so that when I click on it a pop-up list displays that has all my applications and I can then click an application to start it. I have created an alias to my Application folder and have moved that folder to the Dock, but when I click on it, it opens a window that I then have to close after my application starts. I want it to work more like the Start menu in Windows (gasp).

I took the mac plunge this past week and so far I'm loving OS X. I would eventually like to upgrade the stock 250gb to a 640gb, and install the kingston 40gb ssd drive into an optibay as the dedicated boot/app drive. First, for a dual ssd/hdd system, putting the ssd in the optibay is the correct strategy right? What is the best way to attempt this switch?
If I replace both drives at once, I'm screwed because I need the optical drive to install os x, correct? So should I install a OS onto the 640 first, and then install the ssd? I'm also relatively new to time machine, so I'm not sure what its capabilities are--will i be able to only back up my applications? In the end, I'd like to be able to boot from the ssd and store videos/pics/etc in the HD.

I recently bought an express card ssd for my late 2008 Macbook Pro. I use the ssd to boot lion osx, and to boost the performance of apps like photoshop. Do to limited capacity (48gb) I need to leave some apps on the hdd. Is there a way to link to the hdd? p.s.I want the icons of the apps to show on the ssd desktop, but be stored on the hdd. Also, I found this link [url], and I had some complications with inputting the commands in terminal; the app was removed from the ssd, but did not point to the folder on the hdd.

I can find it when I go to Print & Scan but when I try to add I get the following error. Setting up 'Canon MG5300 series...' The software for this printer is currently unavailable. I'm trying to get Connect360 setup with my Mac and Box (I promise, I searched). When going through the setup on the Box it gives me a "Setup Key" that I'm supposed to enter when setting up the software on "My PC." I can't get past this screen on the Box. There's no where to enter this key in the Connect360 Preference Pane. When I go into settings on the Box there's an option to test the connection to the PC. This test sees my mac and the connection is successful. Just can't actually get it setup on the Mac.

Looking to put a 120 SSD in my Mac pro as a boot drive but not sure how best to set up along side my HDDs. This was my planned config, but open to advice:
SSD - system + apps
2x 1tb set up as 2tb RAID 0 - work files + home folder
1tb - Time Machine
This leaves one bay spare, but where would be the best place for my scratch disc, on the SSD? If so would a partition be the best option? Working in graphic design, mainly in Photoshop so performance is my main priority.

I have a Dlink dns-323 NAS that is also functioning as an ftp server. I have no problems writing to it from windows based machines (imagine that). My dad has a macbook pro and all of his business invoices etc. are on there and I want to setup an automated ftp backup that will run once a week. The program I am trying to work with is called Bonkey. It's fairly straightforward to setup but everytime I try to run the backup it acts like it is copying all the files but then it gives an error "unable to create directory".

I'm continually upgrading my drives to larger drives. While in the time being that is fine, but my disk space usage is also increasing. Rather than replacing my 2TB drives in a year for 4TB drives (or whatever size they may be), I'd love to add more drives.
Right now I have my 'backup' drives in an 8-bay SansDigital eSATA cage. This is fine for backups, but for simplicity and drive speed sake, I'd love to just add more drives to my machine. I'm using up all 5 available SATA ports on my 2010 MP. I don't use the Optical drive much, so got to thinking: what about putting my optical drive into an external firewire/USB housing and plug it in when I need to use it. This would free up one extra drive port, which would suffice for the next 2 years or so.
So, are they are good external casing's that will allow me to use my current MP SATA optical drive? Is this method bootable, what pitfalls might I run into?

This is my first post as the soon to be proud owner of a 2010 13" MBP. I'm looking to copy all tunes/photos/settings from my 2006 mini and of course I've got questions:
1- Anyone do a new setup via wireless? I'm going to use a Linksys wireless N and was curious on a time estimate (I know its gonna be slow...).
2- The mini has all settings under my wife's user account...if I just transfer everything as is then I'll end up with my new MBP info being under her name as well. How can I get the files and settings that are under her name to show up under mine on the new MBP?

Best way to set up my Mac pro. I have 3 Seagate 1tb drives and the stock 320gb drive installed in my system. I currently have Windows installed on the 320gb drive which I very rarely use. I have 1 1tb drive setup as my boot disk with all of my data on it. Another 1tb drive is currently used as a time machine backup of the boot disk. I just purchased and installed a 3rd 1tb drive but am trying to find out the best possible way to set things up. My intention is to slowly convert my DVDs in to digital format and store them on my mac pro. Aside from a media station I do a bit of gaming and tinker with final cut and photoshop. Any recommendations on the best way to set up these drive? I have read a bit about raid 0 and understand that improves performance and seems like a good option. If so, is it possible to set up raid 0 without redoing everything that I currently have on my first disk?
