I recently noticed that when I shutdown/restart my MBP, i get stuck in a gray screen with spining wheel. I can't remember if and what i instaled, but I know that this problem happens when I open up ITunes and keep showing up even when I close/force quit manually ITunes.

Today I upgraded a MacBook Pro from 10.6 to 10.7.3 and every time I try to shut it down or reboot it will go to the gray screen of death and ask to be powered down manually. On reboot it gives an error report.

I've tried to verify/fix permissions/disk but that didn't work. I even reinstalled Lion, but not from a fresh install. I'm trying to avoid a fresh install as this machine is used by many different people and it would be a pain to reinstall everything that is currently installed on it. This machine does have Deep Freeze installed. Could this be related to the issue? Even though the kernel panics on shutdown/reboot Deep Freeze is still able to save it's changes and boot thawed or frozen. Conversely, I have also tried to run a thunderbolt stability update and it can not complete due to the kernel panic.

My iMac is the latest model, however when I try to shut it down I get a grey screen with the apple loading spiral and it doesn't shutdown. I have version 10.7.4 OSX Lion, all updates have been downloaded. I have resorted to leaving it on. I do not want to hard shutdown because this could damage the system, my old iMac broke after the hard drive was damaged with the same style of issue.

I have had my macbook pro for just over 2 years. About a week ago it started randomly giving me a blue striped, grey, or black screen. The fan pins up and won't stop and either the laptop shuts itself off or I have to force it off. When it restarts it is very slow and sometimes the fan kicks on and won't stop and the screen just stays white after the initial apple and spinning wheel screen, so I have force shut it down and try again. Other times it eventually loads and lets me in but everything responds slowly and takes some time to open.

View 24 Replies View RelatedAfter installing updates, I restarted my Mac and it ends up with a matte gray (cloth-like appearance) with a gray Apple logo, but does not get to the desktop. I can open/close the DVD tray, and have cursor control, but nothing else seems to work. Short of reinstallation of Snow Leopard, what are my alternatives. I did the Lion update online but do not have a system disk, hence reversion to Snow Leopard is my only option.Â

I'm frequently getting the problem that: many times the screen goes grey and a message box appears telling me that I have to restart. Often this is preceded by the fans gradually increasing in speed until they are runing at maximum speed. BUT the fans behaving that way is NOT due to overheating. I have to use the restart button to make the Mac restart. I have used reset button to reset the motherboard but that did not cure the problem. Anyone have any ideas about how to cure this problem? I'm running 10.4.9. The mac is a dual 1.8 (June 2004). 1.5GB RAM, two SATA internal HD�s (Maxtor), two external firewire HD�s (Seagate). All the HD�s are less than a year old.

I have upgraded the RAM to 4GB, but only recently since ive been in Canada (1 month) experienced this problem. The screen goes grey once a day and the computer asks me to restart the system. I believe its called a Kernal Panic. Ive read on other places that it might be caused by recently installed apps. But i have got rid of these and now nothing has changed! I havnt got my Install CD on me therefore cannot run a reboot. Im not sure if the issues are related but the Mac also kicks me out and makes me log in again. this doesnt happen as frequently but is still concerning and rather frustrating.

My 2009 MBP would have problems shutting down or restarting. On a shutdown, it would appear to off, black screen and no lights, but if you tried pressing the power button nothing happened. I had to hold the power button to turn it completely, then press it again to startup.Restarts had the same behaviour, it would get to a black screen and I would have to hold the power button and then press it again to startup.I ended up taking this MBP back for another problem, and they replaced it with a 2011 MBP (since I had recurring logic board that failed a few times).Anyway, I swapped the SSD from my old mac into the new one, and I have the exact same behaviour!!Seems to be some corrupt settings or something. So I booted from a Mac installation disc, wiped my hard drive and reinstalled the OS, then I restored from Time Machine, and unticked the option to restore settings.I want to also add, that my backlit keyboard isn't working either.I tried resetting the SMC, but the power light on my charger didn't cycle orange/green, so I'm not sure if it worked. I tried multiple time, following Apple instructions.I also reset the PRAM, which did work.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy dual 2.3 ghz G5 power mac with 3.5 gig memory running 10.4.11 started crashing (grey screen "you must restart your computer...) and soon stopped booting. suspecting the hard drive as it had been noisy for some time I ran "repair disk" in disk utility from my mac book (connected by firewire, G5 booted as target) and it booted again but soon crashed again and after a couple more crashes it would not boot and attempts to repair failed. Whenever I install the update and restart my computer, I get the apple logo loading screen and then it locks up on the infamous blank gray screen. I have been able to get back to 10.6 with the install CD, and can then update all the way to 10.6.7 I have tried everything listed here:[URL]To no avail . including a clean install When I start up in verbose mode the last line of text I get is the following, after this it's the gray screen:

In fact I'm getting a grey screen when I just try to restart. Have run Disk Utility (which always finds Permissions errors - even though it appears to make repairs. Also, after erasing my hard disk and recovering my user data from Time Capsule). When I restart I don't get beyond a grey screen (with moving cursor). I can't install the update as obviously I need to restart in order to start the install process.

So last night, my Macbook started to show a folder icon with a question mark on it when I tried to boot it up. I tried to restart a couple different ways, using the Install disc, and when nothing worked, decided to reinstall OS X entirely.
Well, after the first disk finished installing, it said to restart the computer and be prepared with disc 2. Unfortunately, after the restart, I just get a blank gray screen, while my optical drive makes short repetitive noises.
Any advice on how to get the reinstall to work right?
Unfortunately I bumped the switch on the power strip that my Mac Mini (1.42ghz G4, OS X 10.3) is plugged into while it was running. Now it won't boot up. All I get is the gray screen with the gray apple logo and the spinning wheel but no OSX.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7. I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.
Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:.....................
When I click "shutdown" on my MacBook PRO, I get a popup saying "Safari Cancelled Shutdown" then if I try to close Safari the "Quit Safari" is gray and none functional. Even if I let it set for several hours and try again it has not resolved. If I hold down the power button and force shutdown, then when I reboot it works fine for awhile then repeats the whole cycle. All software is updated.

View 15 Replies View Relatedmy mac pro 8 core intermittently will not shut down or turn off. Happens about 20% time. When I tell it to shut down, the finder will quit, finder menu goes away, the dock will stay on the screen and the computer will not turn off. This happened right after I used bootcamp to install win 7 on a dedicated HHD. I was hoping upgrading to 10.6.3 will fix, but the problem still happens about 20% of times. I'm willing to re-format and re-install snow leopard if thats what it takes
