So my Mac Pro (2008, 2.8ghz quad core) won't restart or shut down. It powers up just fine and has no other issues. If I want to restart it, then my only option is to hold down the power button. Here's a console log any ideas where the problem is?
View 15 RepliesI have a MBP running Snow Leopard. The keyboard and trackpad became unresponsive, even though music was still streaming through Google Chrome. So I held down the power button to force shutdown. When something like this occurs, is there anything that should be done upon restarting the system again? Any general maintenance, system checks, etc? From my experience with Windows, not infrequently after similar scenarios, forced shutdown or crash, upon restart it'll automatically go into some type of disc scan. I wonder if anything similar occurs or is necessary with OSX. And lastly, when the system freezes like in my instance, if that's considered a freeze even though music was streaming all the while, is holding down the power button the only resolution? Are there no other safer alternatives to attempt first?

I was watching a movie on my iMac and this box popped up telling me to hard shutdown and restart my computer. Now I can't get it to turn on. When I press power it makes the start noise but the screen stays white. The apple doesn't pop up and it won't load. Trying to put in disks that came with my computer don't seem to work either.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy macbook pro's HD is in bad shape. S.M.A.R.T status is not ok. Sometimes the OS freezes, but so far this is the main problem I detected so far. Until now. I reinstalled the OS X - clean install - to see if things got better, but no luck. Although I think the system is more stable now, the machine is unable to restart or shut down as before. I have to hold the shut down button for a couple of seconds. With this in mind, is it dangerous for the machine to do frequent force shut-downs, or it just deteriorates the HD even more?

Every time I want to shut down my late 2011 MacBook Pro, Mac Mail cancels the shut down & I have to force quit mail. I was having this problem on my old 2008 MacBook before I upgraded to the Pro (but it only started after I upgraded to Lion OSX). So what's wrong w/ Mac Mail? And is there some setting I can change? This is an annoying time suck.

My dad has a problem with the force-shutdown operation in that when prompted for an admin account's credentials, it does not recognise/accept his credentials, even 'tho they are correct. It also doesn't accept my credentials. Like the account my dad is using, I am also an admin user. To get around this problem, we have to log out the user who is logged in and then shutdown.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI purchased the new 13-inch Macbook pro on the day of its launch and since the first 30 minutes of use it has constantly frozen intermidiatly for apperently no reason. I've tried re-installing the OS, taking it to the genius bar(They said everything looks ok and on the repair sheet it said "UNIT IS RFB"), and resetting the SMC. I checked the kernel log and it has a tendency to throw this: 7/4/12 12:02:42.000 AM kernel: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3. Read up on this and apperently it has to do with overheating issues, but this doesn't make sense condsidering it can happen even when just doing textbased web searching(I do not have adobe flash installed). I tried ressetting the SMC, changed nothing. Some days it may only happen once or twice, but sometimes it happens so frequently that the computer is barely usable. Apperently I am not the only one having this problem, some people are reporting the same thing but claiming it to be a problem with the Intel 4000 graphics card. The model is the baseline 13-inch Macbook pro running OSX 10.7.4.

Turning on now will only boot into OS X Utilities with options of:
1. Restore
2. Reinstall OSX
3. Get Support Online
4. Disk Utility
1. Trying to restore I found my backup but the next screen lists no hard drive at all??? Can't go on.
2. Can't reinstall OSX Mavericks as when I click on the "Recovery HD" it says, "This disk is locked"

I have had my macbook pro for just over 2 years. About a week ago it started randomly giving me a blue striped, grey, or black screen. The fan pins up and won't stop and either the laptop shuts itself off or I have to force it off. When it restarts it is very slow and sometimes the fan kicks on and won't stop and the screen just stays white after the initial apple and spinning wheel screen, so I have force shut it down and try again. Other times it eventually loads and lets me in but everything responds slowly and takes some time to open.

Sometimes while using computer, the entire keyboard and trackpad suddenly go completely unresponsive and I can't do anything. The only button that works is the power button. It's so annoying because I have to do an emergency shutdown and I hate doing that. Is there any relief?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSometime when some application hangs I try to force quit it and the process completely disappears from the Activity Monitor, but the little white marker under the icon on the dock remains and there is no way to restart the application. Does any one know of an easy way out without having the restart the machine? I have a 2008 MBP with Leopard 100% up-to-date on the machine. I tried restarting the application directly from the Application folder instead of double clicking on the dock, and I got "An unexpected error occurred (error code -600)" -- according to Apple, error code -600 means: procNotFound - No eligible process with specified process serial number.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7. I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.
Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:.....................
i am having some issues with my macbook these past 3days, and its just not the way i want it to be.. alright, let me describe what happened:
few days ago I was using my macbook as usual, then suddenly comes a terrible lag with my macbook(there's a delay for everything at about 30-45secs). it's impossible for me to restart it, so i did a "force restart(holding onto the power button".
After that, i couldn't turn on my macbook anymore, i kept getting stuck at the first screen(where the apple logo and a spinning wheel under it).. that was my first encounter with such a problem on my macbook. what i found out is that i got an error message saying "open error 5 input/output acard......", but couldn't repair it under disk utility. then went to search the internet and decided to restore from time machine backup. I didn't get any sleep for one whole night because of that!!
After the restoration, now my macbook is acting very very strangely.. like if i left my macbook restarting itself, and come back later it would hang at the login page, but the mouse pointer would still be working though(just can't key in my password or click on anything).. feels like the start up time is much slower, i get slow response at times and other minor minor stuff..
my mac pro 8 core intermittently will not shut down or turn off. Happens about 20% time. When I tell it to shut down, the finder will quit, finder menu goes away, the dock will stay on the screen and the computer will not turn off. This happened right after I used bootcamp to install win 7 on a dedicated HHD. I was hoping upgrading to 10.6.3 will fix, but the problem still happens about 20% of times. I'm willing to re-format and re-install snow leopard if thats what it takes

I have seen the beachball many times in safari 4 so I would just force quit the app. Well in doing that its still shown with the blue dot under it on the dock, aswell as in the force quit menu. I go to open another app (say iphoto or firefox) and I also get the beachball, and I try to forcequit the app, and it will not force quit. Only way to cure it is to manually restart my macbook pro. (I have a unibody 2.4 macbook pro btw_). I have repaired permissions. Deleted and reinstalled safari and ran weekly/monthly scripts via cocktail.

It is not unusual for 6-8 classes a day to do this. I have said putting the MacBooks to sleep would be better for them. Some of the laptops are taking 5 minutes to restart. Can't find data from Apple to support my concerns.

When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?
