Are Xserve servers useable for daily work with OS 10.5? (non-server)
For the G5, what graphics card is the best for it?
Has anyone ever tried to use a xserve as a workstation? What would be the limitations? I'm thinking that a decent video card might be hard to fit in, and possible noise.

I saw that MYOB 2010 Mac has a Xserve app out now. I tried MYOB trial 2010, but didn't like it. It doesn't auto grab your bank statements or have some other key features I want. I really wish there would be a enterprise version for Xserve also with contractor attachments. Anyone use QB mac 2010 on their Xserve with a hack?

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Apple on Friday added a new server option to its Mac Pro lineup Friday, with a $2,999 system that is designed to replace the Xserve hardware which will be discontinued in early 2011.
The Mac Pro Server comes with one 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives. It also has Mac OS X Server unlimited with a client license, and an ATI HD 5770 graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
The new configuration starts at $2,999 and ships in 2 to 4 weeks. Apple's previously available quad-core and 8-core Mac Pro systems ship within 24 hours, while the 12-core model takes 3 to 5 days to ship.
The new Mac Pro Server can also be upgraded, with custom build-to-order options offering up to two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon "Westmere" processors, for a total of 12 processing cores at an added cost of $3,475. Users looking for the best possible system can also add $3,400 to the price and get 32GB of RAM.
The new hardware became available Friday after Apple quietly announced on its website that it would no longer offer its Xserve rackmounted servers after Jan. 31, 2011. New Xserver orders will be accepted through that date, and the hardware will be backed by Apple's standard one-year warranty.
Apple also issued documentation aimed at helping customers transition from Xserve to Apple's remaining server options, the Mac mini Server and Mac Pro Server. Apple's guide notes that the 12-core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server meets or exceeds the performance of the baseline Xserve hardware.
However, while Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is much less powerful than Xserve, Apple's smallest desktop footprint has been the company's most popular server system since its introduction in the fall of 2009.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]
We have a Late 2006 xsrv which has always run fine. A while ago, it froze up and we rebooted, all still works fine however the Hard Drive no longer shows on the desktop, nor does it show up in the Finder or in Disk Utility. The server is running Raid 5 and when I look in Raid Utility everything shows as "Good", including the Volume, the Raid Set and the three drives. The strange thing is that everything is functioning fine on the server other than the above. The problem however is that the drive is not showing so backups cannot identify the source to run.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn LEM, in the description of this model, it says that these have a half length combination PCI/AGP 4x slot. Does this mean that I can use a half length AGP video card in this model Xserve? I have the chance to buy one for hundreds less than a comparable Powermac and was wondering if I was going to be stuck with PCI video.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to know what the best way would be to share movies on my xserve with other Macs and my TV. I want every device to show changes that are made on the server. (So not that I have to add the movies on every Mac to have them show up). If possible, I'd love this to work through iTunes (it should at least work easily; my mother has to understand you know).
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince I'm newly registered on this Forum I can not deal with on my own. We have about 20 intel- based Xserve (headless). Everything works fine except of serial console - there is no way to connect to it. There are only few random characters displayed on system start and thats all. I've tried all connection settings that are mentioned in Apple documentation (57600 8N1, 9600 8N1 etc.. ) with no success. I'm using ZTerm and PL2303 based USB RS232 adapter- no problem with serial console on sun, cisco, brocade and many more . Connection with older xserve's is also possible. I have to put all machines into production, but I can not do this without reinstalling Mac OS X - Raid 1 on OS slice is required. I can not start OS installation with no graphic card or serial console

My Xserver 10.5.7 has spontaneously lost its Administrator password so it will not let me in to give it a new one. I don't have the Server Installation disk any longer, is there anything I can do to get back on the Xserver computer?

I want upgrade our xserve from 2 x 250GB mirrored discs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on xserve to running 1 x 250GB system disc (keeping other as spare) and 2 x 500GB mirrored data discs. (Then upgrade to Tiger).
Can I break the software mirror with:
diskutil destroyRAID /dev/disk{x}
or does this destroy the data too? Would I be left with two working, bootable discs or just two RAID slices? If the latter, how can I convert them into 'normal' bootable discs?Would it be better to upgrade to Tiger first? Or not make much difference?
We have an Xserve (intel) with two ethernet ports running on OS X 10.6.8 server. It is connected to our network and sharing files with local users and authentication from our PDC (over an AD network). I need to setup a private network so that we can keep a few PCs off of our primary network (primarily to keep them from getting updates pushed or malware). Using the two ethernet ports, this should be do-able. It's practically automatic on a couple Windows boxes we have setup. However, when I plug a small router into the second ethernet port, I instantly lose the PDC communication on the other. I'm not sure if there are other issues at this point or not because there hasn't been a time when I can bring the system down (yet).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI haven't made many posts here, but I know this is an excellent site. I have a Power Mac G5, Dual 1.8 GHz PPC (June 2004). I found some (4x1GB sticks) PC3200 Samsung Ram for it. I put it in the computer, turned it on, and the power light flashed twice, waited a while, then flashed twice again and kept cycling. After looking around a while I saw that that probably means it is incompatible ram (?).
The ram that I have has an "R" after PC3200. Is this a problem? Anyways, back to my story, So I put the ram back in that I originally had running and it does the same thing (with the flashing lights). I had to go at this point so I said f-it and I will work on the problem on Sunday or Monday. It is just bothering me why it is not working. Can anyone provide any insight? It may just be that the ram isn't properly seated. I really hope that is the problem,

My old PPC G5 has the front LED (white) flahing three times - I've looked at the various notes about the poddibility of this being a RAM issue, I've checked out the slots, cleaned them and the RAM sticks too, all to no effect. After being switched on for a while, the fans come on and I have a Hovercraft under my desk!

The backgrounds is a soft green/yellow tone.
What ever I do with the lights, they create banding in the animation and the result is that it lookes like bad compression.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a G5 2 x 2.7 for a real cheap price (70 euros, yes its true) as the owner told me that the motherboard was bad and had the three lights problem and won´t boot Then I started reading about this problem (micro-fracture) and tried to find a solution for it. First I tried was the "hair-dryer", it worked but as soon as the motherboard got colder then it hanged as the ram problem came back. I was considering the "oven trick" but seemed too risky and also a lot of work to unassembly it, etc...
I bougth a heat gun for 16 euros (Leroy Merlin). It is able to heat up to 500 Celsius and had two modes. I assumed the low mode may be around 200 celsius or so. Then opened the powermac, and started heating the rectangle area between the two memory banks. Slowly, moving it around, heating (not over the ram, just in the middle area). A few times I turned the max power for the heat gun as my intention was to "melt' the micro-fracture.

When I was using Leopard and I hit "Print" I'd click the Preview button on the bottom left and Apple's "Preview.app" would open the document to be printed (with a Cancel & Print button at the bottom of the dialog box). Now in Snow Leopard, when I choose to see the finished product before I print, I click on "Preview" and Adobe Acrobat opens the item I want to print (which does not have a Cancel or Print button available).800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Mac OS X (10.6.1)
