On LEM, in the description of this model, it says that these have a half length combination PCI/AGP 4x slot. Does this mean that I can use a half length AGP video card in this model Xserve? I have the chance to buy one for hundreds less than a comparable Powermac and was wondering if I was going to be stuck with PCI video.

i have a g5 dual core 2.3ghz from late 05 modal with 4GB DDR533 certifed memory, recently i always had random KPs. i'd tried to reinstall a clean OS 10.5.8 right now still the same. Ran memtest everything seems fine. i didnt use any firewaire devices or usb, just the apple original alu keyboard and mighty mouse, 23inch Cinema HD lcd display monitor thats it!
View 4 Replies View Relatedi fell into an early powermac g5 2.0ghz. the processor runs fine for what i need but id like more memory than the 4gb allowed. ive found some reasonably priced 2.3 processors on ebay and such and was wondering if i can swap them out and put 2gb of memory in each slot to bump up to 8gb allowed with the stock 2.3ghz machine? or am i just stuck where im at? the processors on ebay are complete units, so i would just be swaping out the whole set, no soldering etc.

I have a Power Mac G5 2.3Ghz dual-core system (M9591LL/A) with 2.5GBs of RAM and an Nvidia 6600 PCIe graphics card with 256MBs of RAM.
I tried playing a full-screen HD episode of "The Office" on Hulu.com and it was extremely choppy (like 0.5fps). The sound was fine. It's still quite choppy (~2fps) in a normal browser window (not full-screen)
Is this normal? Does this video card not support it? What is the most powerful card that can be installed in this machine? I'm not opposed to buying a PC card and flashing the ROM if need-be.
I'm pretty new here, though I posted over a year ago here with a few questions as a beginning switcher. My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 2.0G G5 Power Mac here. When you plug the power into the machine, it automatically powers up. The fans come on low and the power light is on. There is no hard disk sound or video. There is no chime or sign of any intelligence. The LED #7 (Checkstop) is on and solid red. I have reseated the video card, and taken out both pairs of memory dimms, rotating the pairs in various slots to eliminate a single dimm or slot. I pressed the SMU reset. I suspect the system board or the power supply. Anyone have a guess on what could cause this and how to test it? Also, anyone know how to get the heatsinks out so I can reseat the processors?

I have heard that macbook pro 13" models might be able to use the new processers due to their lower energy useage. I presume that I will be able to take my mac to an apple store and have it installed. Is this information true?

I am having serious issues with my Apple PowerPC G5.. Its the 2.5 Dual Processor version of early 2005 running os x 10.5.8, i have installed; 2x500gb hds along with 4.5gb of ram... Ok now heres the problem, yesterday i came across an app called "CHUD" this apparantly was developed to help speed up an OS X system, so i downlaoded and began to install the parts to the app suite, after installing 1 or 2 of the CHUD apps i came to Reggie SE, i doubled clicked on the install then my G5 decided to freeze, completley! I tried Force Quit and nothing happended, the system would not respond what so ever, so i left it for 30mins or so to see if it would figure itself out and it didnt so i had no alternative but to cut the power and reboot....
Now, after reboot, my G5 will boot up to the User login dialogue, once i enter my password the dialogue accepts my password and dissapears (astho it is logging into my account) but then the screen turns Blue and the system returns to the Username & Password dialogue box..... Also the fans within my system begin to speed up and dont stop for a while, almost sounds like my G5 Tower is about to take off!
I move into my new place next week and find that the only source of internet will have to be through a wireless router. So now I am need of a Airport card. I have a 2005 iMac G5 (the generation right before the built-in iSight). I know that I need a Airport Extreme Card and an antenna, but I was wondering if somebody could fill me in on the exact part numbers I need for iMac. I've seen lots of different airport cards and do not want to buy the wrong one. If anyone can help me, that would be great.

After looking on ebay, it seems that the module goes for only $20 bucks, but the antenna alone goes for another $20. I plan on using it to sync with my Motorola Razr, so it won't be far from the computer. So, without an antenna, will it still work well enough? (or at all?)

View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.
Looking to buy a used G5. Dude said he upgraded a G5 1.8 to a Dual 2.0... Is that even possible and if so what limitations or problems could the machine have. Said he replaced the whole motherboard.

I did search on this but couldn't find anything specific, but I am considering adding a second 23" Apple Cinema Display to my set-up for a dual monitor workstation.
I have the ATI Radeon 9600 video card with two DVI ports. I have my 20" plugged in to port 1 and it's running at 1680x1050 resolution (the highest). When I add the second monitor, will BOTH monitors be able to run at their highest resolutions? Or do I need to add another video card?
I had heard rumor that resolutions are a trade-off: if your card is split between two monitors, then the resolution splits, true?
If I can run both at the highest res, then I'll pull the trigger and get the extra monitor. I'm assuming there's someone here who has done the exact same thing?
G4 won't boot. No startup chime. Power button light goes off right after I power it on. Fans go on and soon switch to high / fast mode.
Tried everything imaginable -- removing all cards, RAM swapping, PMU reset, bought a new 3.6v PMU battery... everything on this forum (I think) except buying a new power supply which I'm trying to avoid.
I listed my Dual 2GHz G5 on ebay and hope to sell it. In the event I can't, would it make a good server if I throw Mac OS X Server on it? Would a server be of any benefit since my network consists of my Mac Pro, Mac Book,a nd Xbox 360?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI did a thread search and could find lots of instances of an ibook not seeing or using the battery, but I seem to have the opposite problem. I have an ibook g3 700mhz (dual usb). It will only boot and run off the battery. It will not boot or run if it is only plugged in (dead battery or no battery = no running or booting). When plugged into a 45W white charger (that works on other ibooks of the same ilk), it will be green without battery and orange when the battery is in. It will not charge a battery. I've tried:
two other dc-in boards and cables known to work in other ibooks
two different batteries (that charge in another machine)
PMU reset (the light on the charger changes to green for 3 seconds, seemingly indicating the reset was done correctly)
for fun I put in a hard drive that worked in another machine and added ram that works in another machine all to no avail. What the heck is going on?

I would like to use the machine to do powerpoints at our church. I want to use the internal monitor and an external monitor (projector) to do the powerpoints. I want it to work like the my iBook with the screen spanning hack installed.
if not then i will probably end up using a g3 desktop instead.
I currently have a 17" G4 PowerBook which I LOVE. The only problem is that I'm a graphic designer and need more screen real estate. I've been considering purchasing a 30" ACD and waited for MacWorld hoping that an upgraded version with higher specs would be announced.
Sadly, it wasn't and I don't want to keep waiting indefinitely for Apple to update their displays. I've heard some good reports about HP's new 24" monitor (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en...-12401740.html) and on the surface, the specs seem to be a lot higher than Apple's 23" monitor and the price is cheaper.
Currently, I can purchase the HP for $999 CDN while the 23 ACD is $1,099. Also the HP comes with a three-year on-site warranty while the ACD only has a 1-year warranty. I'm considering purchasing 2 of HP displays, which would give me acres of screen space. Soooooo . . .
A couple of questions:
1. Is my 1.67 GHz, G4 PowerBook capable of driving 2 x 24" monitors simultaneously?
2. Does anyone have any experience with the HP monitors and if so, would you recommend them?
As a loyal Mac user for the last 12 years, it irks me to even consider purchasing a product from HP. However, I just cant justify spending more money for a product with lower specification.
I bought an iBook G3 (all white_ from someone and the charger if messed up and will not work. It will work once in a blue moon and turn orange for half an hour. As such, no iBook usage except for ten minutes X_X. I would really like to get a new charger so I can give to my mum. if those new things they sell in CompUSA for mac laptops will work?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a firewire 800 dual 1.42 GHz G4 power mac, which didn't have a hard drive or memory. I bought some memory from OWC and I threw a hard drive in it. When I press the power button I hear the startup sound however there is no video on the monitor. I'm trying to figure out whether it's a bad motherboard, video card, or if it could possibly be something else like the power supply. I have reset the PMU to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to figure out which component is bad?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently lost my G4 MDD 1.25 GHz tower to a power surge. I've replaced it with a G4 MDD dual 1 GHz. This is a dual boot machine. When booted up in 10.4.11 I can select the 9.2.2 disk but it will restart on 10.4.11 - Selecting Target Mode, it will boot on 10.4.11. The only way to boot 9.2.2 is with an Option start. When in 9.2.2 and using the Start up Disk control panel and choosing 9.2.2 - it boots up from the 10.4.11 disk. Additionally, when a Tiger DVD is inserted and the Install and Restart are clicked - it boots up the 10.4.11 disk.
I installed 10.4.11 and 9.2.2 on two partitions of another hard drive - same results. I Reset-all in Open Firmware. Pressed the PMU reset. I'm out of ideas.
I really hope I'm not the only one to experience this.
