Hardware :: Want To Know XServe Raid Performance?
Oct 19, 2010
i just set up xServe Raid at home, got the apple 4GB fibre card have the drive fully loaded with both ends configured as raid 5 and then stripped via Software Raid as Raid 0.
Now when i use the AJA disk speed tester, i only get a max of 180MB/s read performance. i am trying to set up an autodesk smoke system! But this is way to slow!

I want upgrade our xserve from 2 x 250GB mirrored discs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on xserve to running 1 x 250GB system disc (keeping other as spare) and 2 x 500GB mirrored data discs. (Then upgrade to Tiger).
Can I break the software mirror with:
diskutil destroyRAID /dev/disk{x}
or does this destroy the data too? Would I be left with two working, bootable discs or just two RAID slices? If the latter, how can I convert them into 'normal' bootable discs?Would it be better to upgrade to Tiger first? Or not make much difference?

I just ordered a new Mac Pro 2.8 with the primary purpose of doing video editing on Final Cut. (5-45 min. videos here and there). Because of my budget, I cannot afford the the $800 price tag on the apple raid card but I would like to optimize my rendering and writing times. A lot of the forums I have read do not distinguish between software raid and hardware raid.
So here's my 2 questions.
1. Will I benefit from using the software raid in Disc Utility or would I be better off just using a separate scratch/write disc?
2. With such a fast processor and 3 gig Sata HDs, will raid 0 improve speed enough to make a significant performance jump anyway?
I would use a separate hd for my programs and regular files.

Setting up raid 0 for my mac pro 3,1. Right now I have the stock 320GB drive that I use with Mac OS X, and an additional 500GB drive running Win XP through Bootcamp. I read on apple's site that you could stripe multiple drives to create a raid 0 to increase performance on the Mac Pro w/o the raid controller card. So my question is how do I do that? I'm in the process of picking a new 2TB drive to set up the raid with the 320GB OS drive. Since the 500GB one is dedicated for XP I don't think I could include it in the raid right?

I purchased a 128gb Patriot Torqx to run as the boot drive for my Mac Pro. I know that the new Intels are coming but I am happy with the Patriots and wanted some instant gratification. The machine is definetly snappier but doesn't quite have the pep as my MBP running a 256gb SSD as the sole HDD.
I have (3) 1 TB 5400 rpm drives in a striped RAID array. It seems sometimes when I start an application that lives on the SSD boot drive, the other drives begin to run as well (I can hear them spinning). Any thoughts on what could be done to speed up my system and also make sure that the SSD runs as independent from the traditional Hdd's as possible?I am running a early 2008 Intel 2.8ghz machine, 8 cores, 6gb RAM.

I just bought a Guardian Maximus RAID1 kit and I have two 1TB drives in it. I'm using it over Airport Extreme as an airdisk (mac osx 10.6.2)
My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

I have a Lacie ext hard drive with 2 x 250gb HD that were one RAIDed into a single 500gb HD. I ran this update Lacie firmware update: http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers...r.htm?id=10053 And now my HD will only show up as two separate HDs of 250gb instead of a single RAID HD of 500gb.

I have a macpro with 4 x 1tb drives
Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?
Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?

I have a new Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with the Mac RAID card installed with four 1TB drives setup in a RAID 5 array. When creating the volumes in the RAID utility, you can not edit them, resize, etc. If one large volume is created in the RAID utility, you can then partition that one volume using the Apple Disk Utility, which then allows you to resize if needed.

ive put 4 of the hitachi 1tbs in my new mac pro.. and i really want to do Raid on them eventually.. and buy the pricey apple raid card.. i'll do it.. but speed wise:
How fast is a Sata connection straight from HD>Motherboard... ~75mb/s?
Is the Raid 5 config with all those drives much faster... around ~110mb/s?
Do you know if there is anyway to get a 5th drive into the raid 5 array? using the ODD space.. or some externals too... i need as much as space as possible...
And boot camp wont work with raid card anymore? I was thinking to have the startup disc be a raptor to increase speed on the apps, how would it integrate with the raid card, etc

I have a RAID 0 set up with two 1.5TB HDs. I am doing some reorganizing and want to take all the data on the RAID 0 and move it to one of the hard drives in the RAID 0 and create to single drives. Is there any way of moving all the data from a RAID 0 onto one of the HDs?

I am planning on getting a 2010 MP when they come and have a question about it. I am 90% sure that with my budget, I will not be able to after a RAID card. I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.

I have never setup RAID before and this question may be totally stupid for that matter.
Can I setup RAID 1 (or call it mirroring) without the RAID card? I have two 1TB internal drives in my Mac Pro and I want to mirror them. I don't want to spend another 700 bucks just to setup a mirror.
Disk Utility shows some RAID options, but I am not sure how to use them, or if they will work at all without the RAID card.

On my 2009 Mac Pro, OS X's disk utility seems to allow the provision of making a mirror RAID or a stripe RAID.
Is it possible to shove in 2 drives, make a RAID 0 for two of them, and then add in 2 more drives to make a RAID 1 out of that RAID 0? (a RAID 0+1?)

I saw that MYOB 2010 Mac has a Xserve app out now. I tried MYOB trial 2010, but didn't like it. It doesn't auto grab your bank statements or have some other key features I want. I really wish there would be a enterprise version for Xserve also with contractor attachments. Anyone use QB mac 2010 on their Xserve with a hack?

Apple on Friday added a new server option to its Mac Pro lineup Friday, with a $2,999 system that is designed to replace the Xserve hardware which will be discontinued in early 2011.
The Mac Pro Server comes with one 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives. It also has Mac OS X Server unlimited with a client license, and an ATI HD 5770 graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
The new configuration starts at $2,999 and ships in 2 to 4 weeks. Apple's previously available quad-core and 8-core Mac Pro systems ship within 24 hours, while the 12-core model takes 3 to 5 days to ship.
The new Mac Pro Server can also be upgraded, with custom build-to-order options offering up to two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon "Westmere" processors, for a total of 12 processing cores at an added cost of $3,475. Users looking for the best possible system can also add $3,400 to the price and get 32GB of RAM.
The new hardware became available Friday after Apple quietly announced on its website that it would no longer offer its Xserve rackmounted servers after Jan. 31, 2011. New Xserver orders will be accepted through that date, and the hardware will be backed by Apple's standard one-year warranty.
Apple also issued documentation aimed at helping customers transition from Xserve to Apple's remaining server options, the Mac mini Server and Mac Pro Server. Apple's guide notes that the 12-core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server meets or exceeds the performance of the baseline Xserve hardware.
However, while Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is much less powerful than Xserve, Apple's smallest desktop footprint has been the company's most popular server system since its introduction in the fall of 2009.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

We have a Late 2006 xsrv which has always run fine. A while ago, it froze up and we rebooted, all still works fine however the Hard Drive no longer shows on the desktop, nor does it show up in the Finder or in Disk Utility. The server is running Raid 5 and when I look in Raid Utility everything shows as "Good", including the Volume, the Raid Set and the three drives. The strange thing is that everything is functioning fine on the server other than the above. The problem however is that the drive is not showing so backups cannot identify the source to run.

On LEM, in the description of this model, it says that these have a half length combination PCI/AGP 4x slot. Does this mean that I can use a half length AGP video card in this model Xserve? I have the chance to buy one for hundreds less than a comparable Powermac and was wondering if I was going to be stuck with PCI video.

I'd like to know what the best way would be to share movies on my xserve with other Macs and my TV. I want every device to show changes that are made on the server. (So not that I have to add the movies on every Mac to have them show up). If possible, I'd love this to work through iTunes (it should at least work easily; my mother has to understand you know).

Since I'm newly registered on this Forum I can not deal with on my own. We have about 20 intel- based Xserve (headless). Everything works fine except of serial console - there is no way to connect to it. There are only few random characters displayed on system start and thats all. I've tried all connection settings that are mentioned in Apple documentation (57600 8N1, 9600 8N1 etc.. ) with no success. I'm using ZTerm and PL2303 based USB RS232 adapter- no problem with serial console on sun, cisco, brocade and many more . Connection with older xserve's is also possible. I have to put all machines into production, but I can not do this without reinstalling Mac OS X - Raid 1 on OS slice is required. I can not start OS installation with no graphic card or serial console
