I would like to find out as i have a mac mini, g5 quad and a macbook.. just a fan of apple mac lol. I do alot of webdesigning for many clients, could the xserve be a way to i don't know host these clients or something if it is a webserver?

Feb 13, 2012I have configured Mac OS XServe 10.6.8. This Server is joined with Windows 2008 AD Server. I have done coming below:Â
1. Server Admin.app
2. File Sharing -> careated new share folder "test". This folder is located this path "/Volumes/Macintos HD/test"
3. Under Permisstion tab i have clicked + button, then i got new tab "Users & Groups". Their i can see all my windows AD users.
4. I have selacted my user name and two more users full access.
5. Then i have enabled AFP and SMB protocols.
6. Then i have saved the configrstion.
7. Then i went my mac book pro laptop i tryied connect to server afp://192.168.1.5/test
8. I can access the share Folder.
9. Then i have tried smb://192.168.1.5/test
10. User Name and Password not autendicating.Â

Nov 5, 2010Apple on Friday added a new server option to its Mac Pro lineup Friday, with a $2,999 system that is designed to replace the Xserve hardware which will be discontinued in early 2011.
The Mac Pro Server comes with one 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives. It also has Mac OS X Server unlimited with a client license, and an ATI HD 5770 graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
The new configuration starts at $2,999 and ships in 2 to 4 weeks. Apple's previously available quad-core and 8-core Mac Pro systems ship within 24 hours, while the 12-core model takes 3 to 5 days to ship.
The new Mac Pro Server can also be upgraded, with custom build-to-order options offering up to two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon "Westmere" processors, for a total of 12 processing cores at an added cost of $3,475. Users looking for the best possible system can also add $3,400 to the price and get 32GB of RAM.
The new hardware became available Friday after Apple quietly announced on its website that it would no longer offer its Xserve rackmounted servers after Jan. 31, 2011. New Xserver orders will be accepted through that date, and the hardware will be backed by Apple's standard one-year warranty.
Apple also issued documentation aimed at helping customers transition from Xserve to Apple's remaining server options, the Mac mini Server and Mac Pro Server. Apple's guide notes that the 12-core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server meets or exceeds the performance of the baseline Xserve hardware.
However, while Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is much less powerful than Xserve, Apple's smallest desktop footprint has been the company's most popular server system since its introduction in the fall of 2009.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]
OS X Server :: Intel Xserve - Serial Console
Nov 12, 2007Since I'm newly registered on this Forum I can not deal with on my own. We have about 20 intel- based Xserve (headless). Everything works fine except of serial console - there is no way to connect to it. There are only few random characters displayed on system start and thats all. I've tried all connection settings that are mentioned in Apple documentation (57600 8N1, 9600 8N1 etc.. ) with no success. I'm using ZTerm and PL2303 based USB RS232 adapter- no problem with serial console on sun, cisco, brocade and many more . Connection with older xserve's is also possible. I have to put all machines into production, but I can not do this without reinstalling Mac OS X - Raid 1 on OS slice is required. I can not start OS installation with no graphic card or serial console

OS X Server :: Breaking Xserve Software RAID Mirror?
Jul 28, 2006I want upgrade our xserve from 2 x 250GB mirrored discs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on xserve to running 1 x 250GB system disc (keeping other as spare) and 2 x 500GB mirrored data discs. (Then upgrade to Tiger).
Can I break the software mirror with:
diskutil destroyRAID /dev/disk{x}
or does this destroy the data too? Would I be left with two working, bootable discs or just two RAID slices? If the latter, how can I convert them into 'normal' bootable discs?Would it be better to upgrade to Tiger first? Or not make much difference?

Apr 13, 2012We have an Xserve (intel) with two ethernet ports running on OS X 10.6.8 server. It is connected to our network and sharing files with local users and authentication from our PDC (over an AD network). I need to setup a private network so that we can keep a few PCs off of our primary network (primarily to keep them from getting updates pushed or malware). Using the two ethernet ports, this should be do-able. It's practically automatic on a couple Windows boxes we have setup. However, when I plug a small router into the second ethernet port, I instantly lose the PDC communication on the other. I'm not sure if there are other issues at this point or not because there hasn't been a time when I can bring the system down (yet).Â

May 31, 2012I need to reinstall my server becouse it got some issues. The problem is there is a active apple mail server on it. And we need to migrate all the mails and accounts to a new 10.7 installed mac. But since there is problems with the settings in the old one (deep down somewhere), we dont want to clone the whole system, just move the mail database and user accounts.Â
So I can export the OD directory to the new system. That should take care of the accounts. But does the mail db follow the export? Can I just copy the db files to the new system or will they not work with the new accounts?Â

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can't Use 3TB Drive In Xserve Drive Caddy?
Jun 14, 2012I am using a 2006 Intel Xserve (10.6.8) at home for storing lots of multimedia. My 2 TB user drive, which is inside of one of the Xserve's drive caddies is nearly full. I purchased a $157 3 TB Seagate Barracuda (Model No. ST3000DM001) from Amazon and put it inside the caddy. It is not being recognized at all. Looking around for solutions I am getting a hint that trying to restrict the data rate to 1.5 GB/s might help, which is documented for some of Seagate's older SATA drives, where one puts a 2-mm jumper clip on a header next to the SATA connector. This 3 TB model has the same header, but the manual only speaks of data rate autonegotiation. I'll be able to try out the drive with the jumper clip in place tonight and will report back. Curiously, in my Thermaltake USB-2 interface (toaster style), Disk Utility shows the drive as "801.57 GB Generic External Media," which is being discussed in a Leopard Server discussion thread. Last I saw, there was no good explanation for this symptom.Â

Jul 2, 2012My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...Â
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...Â
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic... Â
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic... Â
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

OS :: Vine Server OS System Server Broken In Leopard?
Nov 8, 2007Anyone else use the System Server in OSXVnc to load the VNC server at start up before any users log in?This feature worked in Tiger but now in Leopard the process starts and at startup and quits right away. Anyone know how to work around this? I heard there will be a fix for it in the next release of Vine Server, but I was hoping someone knew a quick fix in the interim.

Feb 19, 2012I have a server in our DMZ that connects to Active Directory LDAP server (non-ssl over 389) but no objects actually show up in the directory editor. I get a green light in my Network Account Server, but queries against LDAP return no results. My end goal is to be able to dictate to Profile Manager what LDAP groups are allowed to enroll devices. I tested on our internal network on a test server and get the same results. Anyone have any luck connecting a Lion Server to LDAP and actually being able to view and utilize users and groups?

Feb 9, 2012I recently updated my Server running 10.7.0 to version 10.7.3 and single-sign-on no longer works for my users. The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message Â
I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.Â

Mar 12, 2012I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.
When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped).The common name and the DNS name are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)Â

May 21, 2012With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>

ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

May 23, 2012not quite so dire if you clicked this wondering ??? And why is this bing posted on Server forum? Well it happens to be on a server and I am trying to iron out what happens when you completely trash the system and start over. This problem occured in a subdirectory on one folder. It (the triangles ->) are there for all the other folders. However, there is one folder I had on a backup (backup, meaning still being a previous version of Lion) that at one point that any group of folders I place into it. there is no browsing triangle that lets you go down furthur. Yes you can open the folder and go further in, so its not prefs that I am aware of. Â
At this level...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. (Must say in Cookie Monster voice if you've watched the "Cookies done yet" bit you might giggle or at least be mildly annoyed.)
If you browse from this part of the hierarchy you get the expected behavior...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. however if you open the folder here is what you get...Triangles Here Still? (uh oh).

Jun 4, 2012I know this issue is kind of old, but there are so many flavors of it, that it is hard to find exact match. I've been having problems with single account, and it happens that this account has admin rights. Emails get pulled/deleted from user's mailbox within 10 secs after arrival. There are no other devices that may be pulling those emails, however, I've noticed something strange in the logs:

I don't know if this event is normal to run on server itself, but seems it runs only for this one account that I'm having problems with. There is no imap client setup on that server, and based on my time stamps observations I'm pretty much convinced that's what's deleting my emails.

Jun 5, 2012The girlfriend and I are consolidating machines and want to try a software based approach instead of a plug and swap approach. My goal is to have only a Desktop + iPad and she have her MacBook. The issue is that we also want to keep it limited to one monitor, etc. on the desk but she is in grad school and will have need for the larger screen and keyboard. My question is can I set up her laptop to use a Mobile Account and assuming she logs off on that before going onto the Server, can she then log in to the Server desktop and use that Mobile Account locally there? So sometimes use the Mobile Account on the laptop, Sometimes on the Desktop. From my days managing a small network, this seems plausible but could also be fraught with problems.

Feb 10, 2012iTunes sees calendars we have set up in the office (those being shared, coming from iCal Server - Lion), but it will not sync that data to our iphones. I tried this at home where I have my personal computer's client iCal app get calendar data from our work server. It won't sync that either, though iTunes does see (in the sync list) the calendars.
