I would like to find out as i have a mac mini, g5 quad and a macbook.. just a fan of apple mac lol. I do alot of webdesigning for many clients, could the xserve be a way to i don't know host these clients or something if it is a webserver?
I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Apple on Friday added a new server option to its Mac Pro lineup Friday, with a $2,999 system that is designed to replace the Xserve hardware which will be discontinued in early 2011.
The Mac Pro Server comes with one 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives. It also has Mac OS X Server unlimited with a client license, and an ATI HD 5770 graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
The new configuration starts at $2,999 and ships in 2 to 4 weeks. Apple's previously available quad-core and 8-core Mac Pro systems ship within 24 hours, while the 12-core model takes 3 to 5 days to ship.
The new Mac Pro Server can also be upgraded, with custom build-to-order options offering up to two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon "Westmere" processors, for a total of 12 processing cores at an added cost of $3,475. Users looking for the best possible system can also add $3,400 to the price and get 32GB of RAM.
The new hardware became available Friday after Apple quietly announced on its website that it would no longer offer its Xserve rackmounted servers after Jan. 31, 2011. New Xserver orders will be accepted through that date, and the hardware will be backed by Apple's standard one-year warranty.
Apple also issued documentation aimed at helping customers transition from Xserve to Apple's remaining server options, the Mac mini Server and Mac Pro Server. Apple's guide notes that the 12-core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server meets or exceeds the performance of the baseline Xserve hardware.
However, while Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is much less powerful than Xserve, Apple's smallest desktop footprint has been the company's most popular server system since its introduction in the fall of 2009.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]
Since I'm newly registered on this Forum I can not deal with on my own. We have about 20 intel- based Xserve (headless). Everything works fine except of serial console - there is no way to connect to it. There are only few random characters displayed on system start and thats all. I've tried all connection settings that are mentioned in Apple documentation (57600 8N1, 9600 8N1 etc.. ) with no success. I'm using ZTerm and PL2303 based USB RS232 adapter- no problem with serial console on sun, cisco, brocade and many more . Connection with older xserve's is also possible. I have to put all machines into production, but I can not do this without reinstalling Mac OS X - Raid 1 on OS slice is required. I can not start OS installation with no graphic card or serial console

My Xserver 10.5.7 has spontaneously lost its Administrator password so it will not let me in to give it a new one. I don't have the Server Installation disk any longer, is there anything I can do to get back on the Xserver computer?

I want upgrade our xserve from 2 x 250GB mirrored discs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on xserve to running 1 x 250GB system disc (keeping other as spare) and 2 x 500GB mirrored data discs. (Then upgrade to Tiger).
Can I break the software mirror with:
diskutil destroyRAID /dev/disk{x}
or does this destroy the data too? Would I be left with two working, bootable discs or just two RAID slices? If the latter, how can I convert them into 'normal' bootable discs?Would it be better to upgrade to Tiger first? Or not make much difference?
We have an Xserve (intel) with two ethernet ports running on OS X 10.6.8 server. It is connected to our network and sharing files with local users and authentication from our PDC (over an AD network). I need to setup a private network so that we can keep a few PCs off of our primary network (primarily to keep them from getting updates pushed or malware). Using the two ethernet ports, this should be do-able. It's practically automatic on a couple Windows boxes we have setup. However, when I plug a small router into the second ethernet port, I instantly lose the PDC communication on the other. I'm not sure if there are other issues at this point or not because there hasn't been a time when I can bring the system down (yet).

My volume control is gone from my computer.
I have no sound and even when I go into system preferences it is set on max and to show on desktop but it is in grey and unchangeable.
No sound comes out of any program and my itunes won't even play songs much less me being able to hear them. Isn't there some way for me to go back in time and have my computer reset everything as it was last week?
I found a way to control the volume through the system preferences, but I tried to do this with the top keys that have the volume labels on them, but when I press one of them to lower or increase the volume, it either brings a widget up to the screen or moves the current windows off to the side, & does nothing to the volume.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using a 2006 Intel Xserve (10.6.8) at home for storing lots of multimedia. My 2 TB user drive, which is inside of one of the Xserve's drive caddies is nearly full. I purchased a $157 3 TB Seagate Barracuda (Model No. ST3000DM001) from Amazon and put it inside the caddy. It is not being recognized at all. Looking around for solutions I am getting a hint that trying to restrict the data rate to 1.5 GB/s might help, which is documented for some of Seagate's older SATA drives, where one puts a 2-mm jumper clip on a header next to the SATA connector. This 3 TB model has the same header, but the manual only speaks of data rate autonegotiation. I'll be able to try out the drive with the jumper clip in place tonight and will report back. Curiously, in my Thermaltake USB-2 interface (toaster style), Disk Utility shows the drive as "801.57 GB Generic External Media," which is being discussed in a Leopard Server discussion thread. Last I saw, there was no good explanation for this symptom.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is anyway to change the default volume setting on my Mac Book Pro? When I plug my headset or earbuds into my Mac Book Pro, the volume automatically increases to half way. Which in some cases, actually most cases, its blasting. I've adjusted the volume in system preferences and nothing works. Is there a terminal command or a change to a Plist to control this before I?m forced to sue Apple for causing my deafness?
View 2 Replies View RelatedVista and 7 have built in functionality to allow the user to control the application volumes independently of each other. For example, if I'm watching a video, and also am browsing websites that randomly emit noise, it allows you to mute your web browser while still having sound from your video. Can this be done in Mac OS X? Or are there free programs?
I work online through a website that has annoying and non-essential sound, so I want to mute this in order to listen to music through iTunes.
Using Lion, latest and fully updated. At some point in the past week or so the volume control stopped having an effect. Using either the keyboard function keys or the item in the task bar, the graphics look good and the blocks/slider move around just fine, but there is no effect whatsoever on sound output. I can control the volume in whatever app I'm using, whether it's a Web app or local app with its own volume control. But the system volume controls no longer have an effect. This is true whether or not I'm using the display output or headphones.

I have recently purchased a macbook pro. I have added an aol email account to my mail, which is great but although i can receive emails, I am unable to send them. I get the message Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator. I have checked the settings and the connection doctor and everything is fine.If I need to send email i have to log ito my aol account via safari, but I would much rather use the mail that is set upon my mac.

I have a Mac Book Pro. The keyboard controller for my volume does not work. It is stuck on full blast and when I try to lower the white image comes up on the screen showing that it is fullblast with a white circle and and a line through it. Also, when I try to lower it on the top right of my screen it is on full blast and will not let me slide it down. I tried shutting down the computer and then holding command+option+p+r until the start up sound to reset the PRAM but nothing happened.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIt seems that the control keys for brightness (default F1 & F2 keys) and volume (default F3, F4 and F5 keys) have moved to another key combination. Don't ask me what I've done . I already tried Fn, but that did not help.

sometime this week the volume control on my pro keyboard stopped working. you can hear the "pip" noise when you hit the louder / softer buttons on the keyboard but the level doesn't change. i am still on good terms with my mute control, however.i have to resort to using the sound control in system preferences instead to increase or decrease the volume (sigh!)
i am running 10.2.8 and at about the same time as this problem occurred, I'd upgraded quicktime and think maybe it's the culprit, but before i waste a few hours playing sherlock holmes.

When my headphones are plugged in I can use the volume control keys on the keyboard to adjust the volume just fine. But when I unplug my headphones the volume display goes dim, my volume control keys no longer work, and my speakers will not play sound.
The problem started last week. The computer has never been dropped and I won't even bring liquid near it so I know neither of those caused this.
Has anyone else had this problem?
