Mac OS X Lion Server :: No Permissions, Locked Out And Want To Start A New Install?

Apr 8, 2012

I have a mini that had the latest Lion Server installed and was being configured, I know very little about servers and it would appear my friends who were helping set things up know even less. As I have now found out tomy cost. This was a refurbished MMserver direct from Apple - preinstalled with Lion Server. After it was almost configured with admin, users, filesharing, mail, ical etc and ssl authentication, a bunch of new users, groups etc suddenly appeared in the admin interface. All these were deleted to leave only the ones that had been set up.

Now the users we set up along with admin can log and use the machine as a user but cannot do anything that will affect the systemas they do not have permissions. Even the names with server permissions have been restricted access When logging into the server app I get the following message. Msg: This server is not supported. Server supports servers running Mac OS X 10.7.

If I go into Apple Software Update it wants an administrator's name and password...the one used to log into the system in the first place no longer works. Given there is no data / files of importance on this machine, I thought I would use Disk Utility to start again but hit the same issue of not having permissions. I have tried all the names and passwords I know and which were used and non have worked. If I then use cmd+r on boot up nothing happens it just continues to boot to the log in screen,

I looked in server admin and nothing is registered and when i add the server name..it just searches but does not do anything. How can I get this back to to the start - a virgin system....so I can start setting it up?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Permissions Is Not Inheriting

Jul 6, 2012

Looking for a bit of help with permissions on a lion server. We have a Transfer folder where files are exchanged on our network. All staff have the "general" group assaigned to their username. So on our Transfer folder, the permissions that i've set are

General - Read Write
root - Read Write
staff - Read Write
Others - None

When one user uploads a file its fine, but when another goes to overwrite the file it says they dont have permission. Looking at the file, the permissions don't revert back to the server. The file ends up with permissions like.

general - read write
(persons username) read write
staff - Read only
Others - Read only

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Unable To Edit Permissions

Feb 1, 2012

I'm trying to edit permissions on a folder via the Server App, and having some trouble. I can access all of the other folders on the shared volume and edit them just fine, but on one folder the OK button is always grayed out. Here's what I'm doing: In Server App, selecting the server under StorageChoosing the drive I want to editSelecting the folder I wantUnder the gear, choosing Edit Permissions. It shows me the list of users just fine and I can see that there's a problem, but no matter what changes I make it won't let me click OK. It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set SSH User-permissions Only To Specific Folders?

Mar 17, 2012

I'm aware of how enabling sFTP support in Lion Server by enabling SSH access in the Hardware settings.

Now, if I do log in using sFTP in Transmit client Software with a normal user account who should be able to access via SSH but got only permissions for the "Public" folder on the Server, that user via SSH/sFTP can see/access the root Directory of the server anyway!

how to set specific folder permissions to users using the enabled SSH/sFTP option?

Software :: Disk Permissions - Locked Out Of Some Apps

Feb 15, 2010

I inherited a 3+ year old MacBook (2GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM) that was working fine until I dropped it! After that, it was very slow to start up and wouldn't open some applications, so I bought a new hard drive and reinstalled the OS and now it's back on its proverbial feet. The problem is, since it was actually not my computer to begin with, when I booted up from the 10.6 SL DVD, I opted to do a full install from the disc and re-register it under my name. Then I used migration assistant to transfer all my applications and data from a Time Machine backup. Now all the disk permissions are off and I'm locked out of some applications and folders. I tried using DiskWarrior, OnyX, and the SL DVD to repair permissions, but they never actually repaired, just detected.

ITunes :: Locked Disk Or No Write Permissions?

Feb 21, 2012

I need serious help. I've tried just about everything I've read online. When I try to run iTunes, it claims that iTunes is on a locked disk or that I don't have write permissions.  I've went into the secutiry tab and such and gave myself full control, yet it still isn't working. It also won't let me unclick the "Read Only" box. I'm on Windows 7.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Unlock A Locked Folder On External Drive When Locked Checkbox Greyed Out

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos.  The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it.  I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section.  In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Preview Shows Files As Locked While They Are Not Locked?

Jul 1, 2012

I can't seem to edit any pictures with Preview anymore since I upgraded to Lion.  Every time I try to save an image after resizing or whatever, it says the file is locked.  If I check the info of the file the "locked" checkmark is unchecked.  And I have all the permissions to the file.  Tried everything, switched the "lock after 2 weeks" thing of in Time Machine (even though tha would probably not help: images I took today are still "locked" in Preview), tried copying them and then saving them, and tried to lock them and then unlock them, but I can't seem to edit and save them.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: App Store Server Won't Install

Apr 12, 2012

I bought the Lion Server and downloaded it.I ran the installer. A window appeared saying "Your Mac needs additional server software. Click Continue to download and install the software and finish configuration."It then shows a progress bar and proceeds to download, but stops with the error message:"Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." There is only an "OK" button that cancels the installer.I wasted hours with phone calls and support chat but they didn't know anything. it really seems like Apple has expanded to the point of incompetency.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Fresh Install Leaves Locked Folder At Top Level (Mac OS X Install Data)?

Jun 5, 2012

I jsut did a fresh install.  wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6.  However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed.  I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine.  however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data.  It contains 181 .pkg files. Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process.  Can I move them to a file where they belong?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set Hostname During Post Install?

Feb 8, 2012

I am building a 10.7 Lion NetInstall image. What I want to setup at some point during the imaging process be it before the install or post configuration it prompts me to set a hostname for a system and then it auto binds the system to our AD domain using that hostname. Is this possible to setup on a Custom NetInstall image on System Image Utility? If so how would I go about setting that up.

I saw how you can create a predefined list of hostnames or have it auto set a hostname using a prefix and the mac address. However I want to be able to define a completely custom hostname during the image process.

OS X Server :: How To Disable File Permissions In Mac

Dec 31, 2008

I recently started working for a web design company, we use a Mac G5 Tower with Leopard Server installed. What I need to do is, if at all possible, disable file permissions so that anyone on the network can make changes to a file without having to change the permissions first. Right now, after a file is created the permissions have to be changed to allow everyone else to make changes if needed. Is there a way to disable file permissions in order to avoid this problem altogether? I personally run Linux, as such I am not a Mac guru so any help will most likely need to be in basic terms so I don't get lost.
