OS X :: Setting Permissions On Home Server?
Mar 4, 2010
I've recently bought a Mac Mini to use as a network file & print server for my home network. Up until that time, I used an AirPort Extreme for that purpose, but ran into some issues with using multiple external drives connected via a hub to the AirPort Extreme's USB port.

I have a Mac pro that I use at home. I want to set it up as a server. Like a hosting server that I can log on to anywhere in the world, not just on my local network. I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? I've tried searching but I keep find local home servers. Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing the first thing I need is a static IP, where do I get that?

I am thinking of getting a mac mini for a home theater. I want to set it up in the home theater to hold my dvd's. Is there any way to get front row to view video_ts folders? I know there is another program that will, but I really like front row. Also anyone out there that has done the same thing that can give me some pointers? I want surround sound (optical out) and it would be connected to a projector.

I am using my time capsule also as external hard drive. Recently i copied a series of files from my powerbook to the time capsule and tried to open them directly from the remote drive. It told me that access was denied (Permission denied). I checked the info and it said that I have "custom access". 3 Users groups were present, one (unknown), another group called staff, and a group called everyone; all with read and write priveleges. Only I wasn't present. When I dragged the file to the desktop, the unknown user disappeared and (Me) appeared. I could open the file normally from the desktop.

I'm in the process of picking out a new imac for myself and will pass on my old one to my six year old daughter as soon as I upgrade the ram and install snow leopard. Now that she can read and get on the computer on her own, can someone give me a few quick pointers on making my computer a little more safe for her. Meaning: are there parental controls in snow leopard or safari that would block adult websites. I don't even know if they rate sites like tv shows and if its even possible to block any part of the internet.

This maybe posted in the wrong area, apologies if it is. I've been asked by people where I work to setup a Wiki. Now my initial thoughts would be that it has to go on a Windows server but looking around it can be installed/configured on OSX server. My question is, has anyone got a decent idiots guide on how to set this up. I'm waiting for a copy of Leopard server to come in which I believe has a Wiki function built in, does anyone have any experience on this?

I have three macbooks, one of them is a MacBook pro. I can connect by using a computer to computer network no problem but problems arise when I want to connect them through my home network. I have set up file sharing on all of the laptops. I have tried using Go => Connect to server, then afp://ip address, nothing. When I click on network in finder, nothing turns up. Do I need to open up ports on my router? What is stopping the macs seeing each other?

All of the permissions are setup as they were on my local computer. I need to reset the permissions so the server can manage them correctly. I have tried to do this via "get info" on the containing folder, via the server tools and via disk utility, but I have still not managed to correct the problem.

I have a PowerMac G4 MDD that I would like to turn into a home server (file server, mail, DNS, Web, Webmail). I don't really need the "network login" features unless necessary. I've looked around the net and have been unable to find a guide that suites my limited knowledge... (I'm a software engineer by trade and home administrator by hobby!) The articles I've found assume a knowledge base greater then I have. I don't have any formal IT training but my current server is a FreeBSD box that I've used and upgraded over the past ~10 years.) I would like to move my home server to OS X.

I recently started working for a web design company, we use a Mac G5 Tower with Leopard Server installed. What I need to do is, if at all possible, disable file permissions so that anyone on the network can make changes to a file without having to change the permissions first. Right now, after a file is created the permissions have to be changed to allow everyone else to make changes if needed. Is there a way to disable file permissions in order to avoid this problem altogether? I personally run Linux, as such I am not a Mac guru so any help will most likely need to be in basic terms so I don't get lost.

Looking for a bit of help with permissions on a lion server. We have a Transfer folder where files are exchanged on our network. All staff have the "general" group assaigned to their username. So on our Transfer folder, the permissions that i've set areÂ
General - Read Write
root - Read Write
staff - Read Write
Others - None
When one user uploads a file its fine, but when another goes to overwrite the file it says they dont have permission. Looking at the file, the permissions don't revert back to the server. The file ends up with permissions like.
general - read write
(persons username) read write
staff - Read only
Others - Read only

I'm trying to edit permissions on a folder via the Server App, and having some trouble. I can access all of the other folders on the shared volume and edit them just fine, but on one folder the OK button is always grayed out. Here's what I'm doing:Â In Server App, selecting the server under StorageChoosing the drive I want to editSelecting the folder I wantUnder the gear, choosing Edit Permissions. It shows me the list of users just fine and I can see that there's a problem, but no matter what changes I make it won't let me click OK. It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

I have an old 2x 1Ghz G4 Mac Pro. I'd like to set it up as a server, if that is even worth the time. But, before I do that, I have a couple of questions:
1) Would it be superior in any way to my linux box running netatalk?
2) Would it allow me to do networked Time Machine backups?
3) Can I do it with my family pack of Lepoard or Tiger?

I'm aware of how enabling sFTP support in Lion Server by enabling SSH access in the Hardware settings.
Now, if I do log in using sFTP in Transmit client Software with a normal user account who should be able to access via SSH but got only permissions for the "Public" folder on the Server, that user via SSH/sFTP can see/access the root Directory of the server anyway!
how to set specific folder permissions to users using the enabled SSH/sFTP option?

I have a mini that had the latest Lion Server installed and was being configured, I know very little about servers and it would appear my friends who were helping set things up know even less. As I have now found out tomy cost. This was a refurbished MMserver direct from Apple - preinstalled with Lion Server. After it was almost configured with admin, users, filesharing, mail, ical etc and ssl authentication, a bunch of new users, groups etc suddenly appeared in the admin interface. All these were deleted to leave only the ones that had been set up.Â
Now the users we set up along with admin can log and use the machine as a user but cannot do anything that will affect the systemas they do not have permissions. Even the names with server permissions have been restricted access When logging into the server app I get the following message. Msg: This server is not supported. Server supports servers running Mac OS X 10.7.Â
If I go into Apple Software Update it wants an administrator's name and password...the one used to log into the system in the first place no longer works. Given there is no data / files of importance on this machine, I thought I would use Disk Utility to start again but hit the same issue of not having permissions. I have tried all the names and passwords I know and which were used and non have worked. If I then use cmd+r on boot up nothing happens it just continues to boot to the log in screen,Â
I looked in server admin and nothing is registered and when i add the server name..it just searches but does not do anything. How can I get this back to to the start - a virgin system....so I can start setting it up?

I have a group of designers that are connected to X Server running Snow Leopard. I have placed them in a group, "MarComm" I have granted everyone full read/write access. ( I can trust them all) I have tried to propagate these permissions..I saved the changes and restarted server. For some reason there are 2 sets of permissions.
1) full access (desired configuration)
2) "custom" access Â
This "custom" access does erratic things..for ex:Â
Allows the designer to pull off a job folder containing 12 items. He has permission to use 8 items, but not the remaining 4.Â
Perhaps I need a step by step tutorial on how to create a proper "group" and to propagate permissions. I understand that the ACL should take precedence over the POSIX. I am not well-versed in using the terminal, but I am a careful person, and willing to try it.Â

I'd like to get them properly set up and organized. My first goal is to work from ONE main computer, I've juggled too many computers and I want to simplify my set up. My 15" MBP will be my work/pleasure, use everywhere computer.I'd like to set up my Mac Pro to work similar to the HP Media Center. I want an 'always on' computer/server for working files, downloads, back up etc. Some suggest I buy an HP media server, it's ready to go out of the box, comes with a url for web access etc. But, I'd rather set up my Mac Pro to for this purpose.I have two video cards in the Mac Pro so I'm going to hook one up to my 24" ACD and get an adapter to HDMI so I can run directly to my 65" Panasonic TV as well.
* Or can I do this wirelessly, I realize I can, but am confused on the best way to go about it.

we had an older xserve die on us recently, a g5 system running 10.5. we were able to recover most of the file content we needed off of the server, but not all of it (yet), and not any of the system files itself (the main drive was toast)Â the problem im having is this... we've been migrating this content over to a newer server running 10.6.8 server. Several of the files we need to get at and modify however were locked via the finder right before the original server went down (we do this to prevent others from editing a live file on the server). now, because the user data for these files was lost (terminal & finder show them as being owned by "unknown") we cannot change ownership of the files to unlock them.so basically, its a permissions loop that we cannot escape from:Â terminal will not let us chown or chmod the file, because its owner is unknown because the file is locked via finder, it will not let us change the owner.

As you probably noticed from looking at my sig, I have a new G4. It has been pretty heavily upgraded, with a 1.4GHz CPU, 1.3GB RAM, two 160GB drives in RAID, a dual-layer DVD burner, a Geforce 6200LE 256MB, an Airport card, and Leopard. I bought it because:
a) Didn't have a Mac
b) wanted to set up a file server
So, how would this work? What I want it to do is serve music, pictures, movies, and documents throughout my house, and I actually need it to work with a few operating systems:
- Jaguar
- Tiger
- Leopard
- XP
- Vista
I don't have to go out and get 10.5 Server, do I?

This problem is on a Xserv G4.
The problem happened on the server installed with x.3.9 runnig for over a year, giving AFP, FTP, NFS, services and runnig OPEN DIRECTORY in REPLICA. The DHCP service is provided by a Xserv g5 giving Netboot service on the same subnet.
In Server Admin, Netboot lost the setting menu as I was accessing it. So no ports to see, no images can be added. The only menus available are
Overview
Log
Clients
The start button is shadded, so not avaiable.
Through TERMINAL, with sudo serveradmin start netboot I get
serveradmin[1076} Exeption in docommand: *** -[NSCFArray addObject:}: attempt to insert nil netboot:error = "NIL_RESPONSE_ERR (*** -[NSCFArray addObject:}: attempt to insert nil)"
I have undated to TIGER X.4.3, but of couse, it is the same. Everything else works.
After reinstalling a NEW system a reconfiguring EVERYTHING, I again lost the menus of NetBoot as I accessed them !!
Booting witn and external FireWire drive with a clone of my working SYSTEM in x.3.9 has the menus but the ports can't be seen.
A hardware problem ?
