Mac Mini :: Install OS X Lion On Its Server?

Apr 1, 2012

I have purchased mac mini (the server version because of quad-core performance), but I don't need any server features. All I've found regarding this question is simply removing the server app, but as I can say all the processes still work — emails about IP address changes are generated and sent, you name it.

Mac Mini :: Server (mid 2010) 10.7.2 And 10.7.3 Won't  Install?

Mar 25, 2012

My Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.1 will not accept the update to 10.7.2 or 10.7.3. I know that there have been some MacBook Pro's that wont accept the install. I have run disk utility and repaired disk permissions and verified the disk. I cant boot off a disk as Lion is a direct download from the App store. I have read that 10.7.2 was very buggy and some people were restorong back to 10.7.1. Can I update to 10.7.3 from 10.7.1. I have also tried the stand alone installers. The same problem the .dmg downloads and opens I run the install package which validates and runs. When I am prompted to restart a message comes up same unexpected error ocurred unable to install and a restart option. Its driving me nuts.

Mac Mini :: Server With Snow Leopard Install

Apr 30, 2010

I've been lurking for a while and on the fence about a new Mac Mini. Since I've given up on a Media Center PC with Blu Ray, I'm back to the Mac Mini. I've got two blu ray players and PS3, so I think we've got that covered! One of the things that I'd really like to have is maximum storage for the Mac Mini, since it will have the video and audio on there. The question is this. Is anyone out there running a Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard installed as a regular desktop machine? How does that work out? Is it worth it? I already have a very nice external Lacie double layer DVD burner, so the optical drive isn't necessary for me. Does the Mini Server with its 1TB of storage make sense? At $849 for a refurb at Apple.com, it seems pretty reasonable. Would love to hear thoughts from this crowd.

OS X :: Can't Install Standard Snow Leopard On Mac Mini Server

Jul 14, 2010

I purchased a top of the line Mac Mini Server and I'd like to install the standard version of Snow Leopard on it. I tried to the following: I inserted my retail snow leopard DVD in my macbook pro and I launched "Remote Install Mac OS X" (in /applications/utilities) and I followed the instructions. Then I booted the mac mini holding the "alt" key down and selected the snow leopard dvd as startup disk. What I see next is the Apple logo with the activity indicator spinning and after several seconds I see a "no entry" sign and nothing more it stays like this forever. Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a Mac mini server?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: App Store Server Won't Install

Apr 12, 2012

I bought the Lion Server and downloaded it.I ran the installer. A window appeared saying "Your Mac needs additional server software. Click Continue to download and install the software and finish configuration."It then shows a progress bar and proceeds to download, but stops with the error message: "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." There is only an "OK" button that cancels the installer.I wasted hours with phone calls and support chat but they didn't know anything. it really seems like Apple has expanded to the point of incompetency.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mini Server Won't Connect To Network

Mar 5, 2012

I have just purchased my first mac (Mini Server w/ quad i7) the other week. I am having serious troubles connecting it to the internet at my work or uni networks. The mini works just fine at home with a simple connection to the modem/router. But at uni there is a small infrastructure and proxy, and at work there is a more complicated setup also (although the firewall isn't blocking any ports or normal internet traffic. There also isn't any MAC address filtering on any of the networks). I have tried both ethernet and WiFi, with no success.

Mac mini obtains local IP, can successfully contact the DNS. Pinging locally to the gateway fails (so so does pinging google, or external addresses). traceroute also fails internally. But that's about as far as I can go on either work or uni networks.

I've fiddled around with all settings i can find under 'Advanced' in the network options. But again nothing.

It is a completely fresh install of OSX 10.7.3, no 3rd part apps or software have been installed yet (this is due to not having an internet connection).

I am COMPLETELY new to mac software - other than knowing the dashboard is down the bottom, the taskbar is up the top and the minimizing/closing is in the top left corner.  I am in the 3rd year of my IT degree at uni, so I know some generic networking troubleshooting, but that's about all.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set Hostname During Post Install?

Feb 8, 2012

I am building a 10.7 Lion NetInstall image. What I want to setup at some point during the imaging process be it before the install or post configuration it prompts me to set a hostname for a system and then it auto binds the system to our AD domain using that hostname. Is this possible to setup on a Custom NetInstall image on System Image Utility? If so how would I go about setting that up.

I saw how you can create a predefined list of hostnames or have it auto set a hostname using a prefix and the mac address. However I want to be able to define a completely custom hostname during the image process.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Automatic Switch Off Mac Mini Server When Another User Is Still Connected?

Mar 9, 2012

I have a dozen of macs connected to a mac mini server. This one is programmed to automatically switch on at 8:00 am and switch off at 8:00 pm. However, if a user is still connected at time of switchng off (8:00 pm) it cannot switch off automatically and a window appears saying another user is still connected, do you still wish to disconnect. If administrator is no more there to click yes, server does not switch off and still runs all night long. On former versions (10.4 or 10.5 ?) it worked the other way, ie other users were informed that server would be disconnected in the next one minute and that they had to save their work.

Is there a solution to come back to a similar way of proceeding?

But when I try to drag a file to the desktop of the mini-server, I get asked for a password. I type in the password; it gets accepted. Then I get a dialog: "A newer version of do you want to replace...?"  When I click "yes," I get another dialog:

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Average Number Of Users On A Mini Running?

May 2, 2012

I'm in IT at a shop that is 98% Mac based.  At this point in time, we would like to use Lion Server to provide Time Machine backups and software updates to our users.  The environment is as follows:  We are all using laptops, connecting to our network and the internet using wireless only.  The mini has an ethernet cable attached and wireless will not be enabled for it.  All Time Machine backups and software updates will be done wirelessly.  The backups will be mostly text files, although in some instances there will be large amounts of said files.  Of course I will limit and exclude certain folders and file types from backup and I would like to have the user do their first backup via firewire/thunderbolt so the largest amount of data will not be pushed over the air.  I'm currently running tests with a few users doing just Time Machine backups to the Mini and all is going well, but I'm curious as to how many people I will be able to place on one Mini before it becomes too much.  We have about 70 users now and could be close to 100 by the end of the year.  We are a company that will continue to grow too.  Anyone have thoughts or experience with a large user base doing backups to a Mini like this?  How many users could I fit on each Mini? Would I be better off just going for the Mac Pro?

Mac Mini :: Mac Mini Server As A Staging Server Running?

Feb 5, 2010

I am a web developer using Mac to develop and Ubuntu Server to deploy. It's a pretty standard setup nowadays. The time came to replace my staging server ( which I keep at my home on a dedicated IP ) and I could not resist the allure of the new Mac Mini Server. So I bought one and tried to do a Ubuntu install and thought I could sell my OSX server license as I have no need of it.I imagine a lot of people not used to Apple's policies might think like this. So how did it go? Bad and then good.As far as I have been able to ascertain, it's impossible to install Ubuntu on a Mac Mini Server ( at least without the additional DVD-ROM drive which I refuse to buy ).What's more, the OSX Server license I bought is not transferable to non-Mac Mini Server computers so I can't really sell it anyway.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: No Permissions, Locked Out And Want To Start A New Install?

Apr 8, 2012

I have a mini that had the latest Lion Server installed and was being configured, I know very little about servers and it would appear my friends who were helping set things up know even less. As I have now found out tomy cost. This was a refurbished MMserver direct from Apple - preinstalled with Lion Server. After it was almost configured with admin, users, filesharing, mail, ical etc and ssl authentication, a bunch of new users, groups etc suddenly appeared in the admin interface. All these were deleted to leave only the ones that had been set up.

Now the users we set up along with admin can log and use the machine as a user but cannot do anything that will affect the systemas they do not have permissions. Even the names with server permissions have been restricted access When logging into the server app I get the following message. Msg: This server is not supported. Server supports servers running Mac OS X 10.7.

If I go into Apple Software Update it wants an administrator's name and password...the one used to log into the system in the first place no longer works. Given there is no data / files of importance on this machine, I thought I would use Disk Utility to start again but hit the same issue of not having permissions. I have tried all the names and passwords I know and which were used and non have worked. If I then use cmd+r on boot up nothing happens it just continues to boot to the log in screen,

I looked in server admin and nothing is registered and when i add the server name..it just searches but does not do anything. How can I get this back to to the start - a virgin system....so I can start setting it up?

Mac Mini :: Good High Resolution LCD Monitor Compatible With 2010 Mini Server?

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 10.6 Server Install Won't Get Beyond Welcome Screen?

Jun 20, 2012

I have a clean install of 10.6.3 Server (retail) and every time, after the post-installation reboot, I get to the Welcome screen and I can't use the local mouse/display to go any further (the "Continue" button is dimmed out). And there's the spinning progress wheel in the bottom, left corner. From past headless server installations, I think what's happening is the server is waiting for a remote connection to continue with the installation (via Server Admin or Apple Remote Desktop). Because I've had the logic board (just) replaced, I can't do a remote install as it's not accepting the "new" serial number associated with the logic board (ie. first 8 charachters), nor is it accepting the 12345678 password. So, I'm forced to do a local install — but, I can't even do that now because I'm stuck on the Welcome screen.

I've tried reinstalling the OS several times now, let the machine sit on the welcome screen for an hour, tried doing it with out and without network cables attached (including different ports on the Mac Pro, different cables, etc.), but I just can't get passed the Welcome screen.
