OS X V10.7 Lion :: Clean Install On A Second Boot Drive Refuses To Start

Mar 2, 2012

I followed instructions from Apple and reformated a second boot drive with GUID partitions, loaded my Snow Leopard OS and updated to the last version. Downloaded Lion and installed, set this second HDD as the new boot drive and waited - one monitor came up but then nothing happened for so long I went away. This has happened three times now and while I'm not watching my MacPro Xenon 8 core reboots from the Snow Leopard drive..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Simply Clean Install On A Fresh Hard Drive?

Apr 21, 2012

This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.

So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???

Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?

I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?

The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-

MacBook Air :: Refuses To Boot From 3rd Party DVD Drive?

May 9, 2008

Ok I connected my Air to a LG drive GSA-E50L USB DVD drive. It seems to work fine in Windows and OS X. For booting it does work with the OS X dvd's.

However, it refuses to boot from a Windows XP installation disk.

I've tried different boot disks aswell. No luck.

When I boot pressing the option key, the DVD drive is one of the options. It says "Windows CD". I then choose it. It starts reading the CD and then the apple sign is displayed. The apple sign changes into a stop sign and goes back to the apple sign again.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Has anyone been able to boot from a Windows disk with a non Apple USB drive?

IMac :: OSX Boot Drive Corrupted - Trash Refuses To Empty?

Nov 9, 2010

1. I do occasional maintenance with onyx and have been getting a few startup disk errors in recent months. These seem to get repaired and the computer still functions as normal. I have never had these before in 8 years of using osx so they do worry me. Is the osx boot drive just a bit corrupted? Would a simple reinstall help or is the hd showing signs of failure?

2. The trash simply refuses to empty. The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items.

I've tried to bring the items back to the desktop and the folder they came from but they simply make a copy of them. I've tried the option key method and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash + sudo rm -rf /Users/user_name/.Trash in the terminal but get no change

IMac :: Unable To Install Clean Snow Leopard / Instructions To Install On Internal Drive?

Dec 20, 2009

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 iMac is being replaced but I have to reinstall Snow Leopard myself.I did search in MRoogle and at Apple and cannot seem to find instructions on how to perform a clean Snow Leopard install on an iMac internal HD.

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

MacBook Air :: Clean Install Of Vista Without USB Drive?

I have a Windows PC with Vista and I am trying to install Vista on the MBA through Remote Disc. I booted from the Leopard Disc 1 and deleted the partitions and also chose MBR (for windows) in the advanced options while doing so. But I am unable to boot from the Vista CD thru the Wifi Network. On reboot (while holding Atl) it only recognizes the Mac OS CD, when in the drive shared drive of the PC.

I just want a clean vista install with no Mac. It was too much for me to start learning now.

Software :: PowerBook Refuses To Boot And Ignores Boot Keys?

Sep 13, 2009

I have OSX installed on a very old Powerbook. Well it was working and then I left it for awhile and now it is giving me the good old folder to question mark screen (maybe someone dropped it?). Well I'm not much of a mac user so I looked up all of the different boot key commands and tried to boot from my OSX CD. Holding down C did nothing, and neither did ANY of the other commands except holding down option and that key command that restarts the computer (apple, option, shift, esc?). Anyway, I got into the screen that shows your hard drive and all other devices and it actually listed the CD drive so I clicked it and clicked the next arrow. I waited for awhile and then the screen reloaded (as if it was rescanning for removable devices) and then stopped and only displayed the local disk. What is going on?! It only sometimes displays the CD in this screen and the next arrow never does anything regardless!!

I really don't know any of the computers stats but if I were to guess they're pretty bad. All I know is it used to run OSX just fine and then other people used it and now it doesn't do anything.

I am doing a clean install on my Mac Pro and want to bring in my user directory onto a 2nd drive (where it was originally).During the install, should I point to an external drive where I know have my user directory cloned and allow OS X to restore it?Should I just copy my user directory to the 2nd drive after doing the install?

Other caveats? I can foresee all sorts of potential problems. Anybody have any experience with this?I know that I will lose my apps in the process.

IMac :: Clone Vs Clean Install When Going From Hard Drive To Sdd?

Nov 1, 2010

I'm drop shipping my 27" imac refurb to OWC for them to install the sdd, ram, etc. Someone here said OWC will clone the hd to the ssd and then the end user went back and did a clean install. Wouldn't it be better if OWC just installed the SSD, left it clean, and I did the install from the disks myself? I mean I assume it's a time issue why they would clone, not fresh install. I have plenty of time to do it. Is it not that simple? Is there something more fangled to it, or is it just running the disks and doing what they say?

Mac Mini :: Cannot Format Hard Drive And Do A Clean Install?

Apr 27, 2012

I'm in a pretty big mess right now.  I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions.  It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems.  Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error.  When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to.  I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already.  When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with.  I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recovery HD Does Not Work - How To Do Clean Install

Jun 28, 2012

I have a problem with the recovery partition on my SSD. There is a recovery partition. I can se it in the disk utility but it's seems like it's not working. When I boot the system with the option key I can select the recovery hd but when I do I just get a grey screen with a "forbidden" sign and the computer turns it self off a minute later. I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13". I swapped the internal drive to a Samsung 830 SSD but the only way i could get it to boot was to clone the original disk to my new SSD, otherwise the computer couldn't find the drive.

It just booted up with the same grey screen with the "forbidden" sign just like when i now try to boot into the recovery HD. I made a bootstick with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0 but it can't boot from that one either. I even made it on a different computer running Lion with a working Recovery HD. I also tried to boot from a Lion dvd (and usb) I made from the image I got from the appstore but of course, the same grey sceen appears. The question now is; how do I get a working Recovery HD in Lion so I can make a clean install? The system is running fine with the clone from the original disk but I want that Recovery HD.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recently Performed Clean Install Of 10.7, Crashes Often?

Mar 18, 2012

I recently did a clean install of OS X Lion 10.7 on my Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (13" Late 2006 model).  Since then I have experiencing significant instability with the OS.  It has crashed several times now, and crashes every time I try to update the OS software or use Time Machine.  Also, the fan is running at a high speed at all times. I've read that there is some preliminary stuff the OS has to do once installed that may take a while.  Could this be the source of this instability?  I'm confident that updating the OS would be beneficial, but it crashes every time I try to do so.
