Laptops :: External G Drive Volume Disappear From Macbookpro Devices List?
May 13, 2009
I have a 500GB g-drive that I use with my macbook Pro(running Leopard O/S, current version). Because I just about maxed out the hard drive on the mac, most of my Aperture photo libraries reside on the g-drive, in a volume labeled "Aperture Photos." Something very weird happened a couple days ago that really spooked me. The G drive is configured in 4 volumes, and upon ejecting one of the volumes from the Finder window (by dragging it to the Trash which normally doubles as an Eject mechanism) my volume disappeared without the usual prompt that says something like: do you want to eject all So here I am, looking at my Finder screen, and 3 out of 4 of the G drive volumes remain listed in my Devices list, but the one with the photos on it is gone. With fear in my belly, I looked in the trash, and it looks like the contents of the entire volume ended up in there!!! So panic mode set it what do I do?!? How do I restore it? Whats weird is that the missing volume and its icon shows up on the desktop, but not in Finder, making it all but useless.
I have one of those external memory drives, nothing fancy just a 250gig deal that I have ALL of my music on. Well I usually keep it plugged into my laptop here at school, but today I accidently unplugged it without doing the proper eject procedure. So it disappeared from my Drives list and now when I plug it in, it still doesn't show up. How the hell can I get this thing to show up and let me listen to my music again.
I have MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Penryn 15". OS X Leopard, 6 months old.
In trying to add up to a wireless network at home (with a PC and a laptop Windows XP) I switched to "start from network" on System Preferences. On reboot, shows image of file with a ? or flashes a world clip. Usual command+S or C, Alt, attempt to reboot from CD fail. Before attempting anything else I don't want to lose my documents. When reboot with Alt, the padlock with space for password appears. I didn't set a password when I installed OS.
I don't want my MBP to show up in the shared list when I'm connected to my work network. I've unchecked everything in the shared list in system preferences but it still show up on other computers.
I just noticed that my external drive used for Time Machine has disappeared from the Finder "Devices" section. Thankfully it continues to work fine and Time Machine can access it, but it makes me nervous!
Disk Utility sees the drive and partition just fine. I've run Disk Utility Repair disk both from the startup drive and the install DVD and there are no errors. Repair permissions is greyed out/disabled under both conditions. All the rest of my internal and external drives are visible in Devices.
How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. I can't lose the data because I have everything I did during film school on there. That stuff is basically what you pay for when you go to film school, you pay to show what you can do and what equipment you have used.

I have two desktop macs, a macbook air, two iPads, and two iPhones. I have one Apple account that I use for all music - including music my college aged kids download. My problem is that I would like to get all the music into one library, delete the duplicates, then have the external drive store all the music. Is there a practical way to do this? This way I can set up my devices so that they all have the same music and playlists.Â
I got an external drive (NTFS). I want to use it for mac. Do I just partition it into 2 partitions? Or do I need to Erase it into one Mac Journalled volume first? I am erasing it now, it says its gonna take 12 hours. Or is erasing the first step. And then partitioning is the second step. Two distinct processes/operations, right? (I basically want two partitions on it, both OSX journalled. One for super super, and the other to maybe try sandbox or just storage or maybe time machine.
Belkin 4 usb hub does not show up on list of peripheral devices. Will run printer & keyboard but not icube or logtech mic. Why does the hub not show as external device like nano, etc?
OS 10.5.8 on MacBook Pro I burnt a DVD this morning - two actually as the first copy had a 'verification' error. When I was finished, I dragged the burn folder (folder icon with the radioactive symbol on it) from the desktop to the trash. Later in the day, I emptied the trash.Same as I do about once a week. Despite emptying the trash and restarting the computer, the folder still shows up in the list of places in the left column of an open finder window.
The folder is not on my desktop and is not in my trash, just in the list of places. When I try to click on the folder in the list, I get a message "The Volume for ..... cannot be found". In the past, dragging the folder from the desktop to the trash, emptying the trash and then restarting has always removed it from the list of places (and I believe similarly when I have software updates via .dmg files). So the questions are: (1) how do I get rid of it now and (2) what could have caused it to happen.
I have 3 internal drives in my macpro, a 1TB devoted to time machine for the macpro's drives. Is it it possible to use the same time machine drive for a macbookpro? (obviously over the network)
Is there any way to get a list of all inode numbers on a volume? I have a "find -x /Volumes/thedisk/* -exec stat {} ;" going but requires lots of CPU time. Seems like I should be able to look directly at the file allocation table...oh wait, that is DOS. This is on an HFS disk: /dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)Â
I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
I am new to Mac and like it so far. However, I am having some difficulty in one area. Whenever I connect an external device such as a mp3 stick or my psp via usb the device will autorun like crazy either uploading or downloading something. I cannot tell. When I hook it up to my PC I will find hidden files like .fseventsd and .spotlight . And if i delete something on the device it will create a trash bin and just move it to the hidden trash bin IT WON'T DELETE IT. Is there malicious software on my OS causing this or is this a simple fix I can disable in the control panel?
APPLE has posted a knowledge base article recently, saying that the 27 inches iMac could be used as an external display for other devices, using a third party converter to convert the signal to DisplayPort compliant signals.

At least we have some official words that it does work and can expect those converter to be available soon
I've got a 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, and there seems to be some problems with my USB "system". When I eject an external hard drive, my usb mouse and keyboard will stop working for a short while, sometimes requiring that I unplug and plug them back in. Also, when I try to set my default audio input/output device to my USB interface, it resets every single time I turn the computer on and off. Not sure if these are related, but it seemed relevant.
As the title states: How do I make external devices connected to my Mac appear on my desktop?Â
Cos the thing is that my Mac's hard drive got corrupted for whatever reason I don't know so I had to re-install my OS (Lion). Now the thing is that unlike before if I connected my phone, flash drive or wanted to install a new applicatiion it would appear on my desktop as an icon, now it doesn't.Â
I recently RE-Imaged my MacBook Air because of other software issues. Well that fixed those problems, now I am having other problems! When I plug a Pendrive, or my External HD into the MBA it doesn't appear on the desktop but it does show up in the Finder Window.
I don't play comp. Games, don't store pictures on my comp., and I don't need a lot of software. So how much memory and hard drive do I really need for a Mac laptop?
I just put a Maxmedia 640 GB SATA HDD in my 2009 Macbook Pro and since then it's been acting wierd. From initial start-up it's really slow but gets faster over time, still there is a persistant lag that kicks in every now and then, mostly when Firefox is involved. I don't think the hard drive is acting up. I can hear the disk spinning and can hear it read and write. Like I said most of the lag is around Firefox but after a while of heavier use the whole system returns to normal.
I have a Early 2008 White Macbook with a 160GB 5400RPM Fujitsu drive that is driving me mad. it is far too small and i have nowhere to store my RSS feeds and podcasts from iTunes anymore. also, it boots really slowly because of all the applications and HD podcasts on the drive. I am considering getting the Seagate Momentus ST9500420AS ( the one without G-Force Protection ) because it is a 7400RPM drive with a 500GB capacity. Has anybody had any problems with this drive in their macbooks or in general? Would the vibration/noise be an issue? I'm also considering the Scorpio Blue and Toshiba MK5055GSX because they're very power efficient, but at 5400RPM, they are slower. I'd love to see boot times in particular improve. There is already 2GB of RAM in the machine, so that isn't the problem.
I have a MacBook Pro 15 (2006) 2 ghz core duo, 2 gigs ram, & 100 gig 7200 RPM hard drive. I would like to change the the hard drive out to a larger one, but I'm seeing all kind of reviews & I'm not sure which ones to put more weight on. I have been looking at a 320 Gig or the 500 Gig. Looked at the Seagate, WD, & the Hitachi. I want to stay with the 7200 RPM. I also know there can be an issue with the, shock or drop sensor on the hard drives not being compatible with the laptops shock sensor, as well as heat & noise issues. I will state that this is my first Mac since the late 80s. But that I have a several very good friends that are long time Mac users and that have done this type of switch out, so while I know that the switch out is more complicated than some I have good tech support on that side of this switch out.
