Intel Mac :: Rename An External Drive That Appears Under "Devices" In Finder

Jun 27, 2012

I have to rename an external drive that appears under "Devices" in Finder.

But when the drive is highlighted and I go to "Info," what comes up is whatever is highlighted WITHIN the drive.

How do I rename the drive itself?

OS X :: External Drive Does Not Appear In Finder Devices?

Apr 30, 2010

I just noticed that my external drive used for Time Machine has disappeared from the Finder "Devices" section. Thankfully it continues to work fine and Time Machine can access it, but it makes me nervous!

Disk Utility sees the drive and partition just fine. I've run Disk Utility Repair disk both from the startup drive and the install DVD and there are no errors. Repair permissions is greyed out/disabled under both conditions. All the rest of my internal and external drives are visible in Devices.

IMac Intel :: Lacie External Hard Drive Doesn't Show Up - Sporadically Appears In Disk

Feb 19, 2009

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...

I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.

I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.

I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...

I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.

But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

Intel Mac :: Finder Is Not Recognizing External Drive?

Mar 29, 2012

Yesterday, (Mar 28,2012) Finder was listing my external drive but when I went to eject the drive, it no longer showed in Finder. I cannot eject the drive properly. It is showing on my Desktop. I've done a disk utility verfy disk and it is recognized and no problem was found. I tried a new USB cable and the old Fire Wire (which doesn't work??). I used a different USB port but nothing seems to work. I've also tried restarting. I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.6.8.

MacBook Pro :: How To Rename External Hard Drive With Two Partitions

Jun 6, 2012

I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

Final Cut Pro X :: Rename External Hard Drive Without Losing Links To Media?

Dec 1, 2014

I have a new Mac Pro, OS X version 10.9.5, running FCPX version 10.1.3. I have copied all of my data from a 1T external hard drive to a new 4T external hard drive, but FCPX doesn't recognize my media files unless I rename the new drive to that of the old one. The problem is I want to continue using the old one. Is there an easy way to relink my files and keep the original name of the new drive?

Jul 19, 2009

I've got OSX on a MacBook Pro and a bunch of programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator etc. and I'd like them to be accessible in my dock like iPhoto or iMovie.

How do I do this?

BTW, currently, I have Firefox in the dock but when I click on it a box pops up and I have to again click on the Firefox logo for the app to actually open. Then something that looks like an external hard drive with the Firefox logo appears on my Desktop. Why is this happening?

Laptops :: External G Drive Volume Disappear From Macbookpro Devices List?

May 13, 2009

I have a 500GB g-drive that I use with my macbook Pro(running Leopard O/S, current version). Because I just about maxed out the hard drive on the mac, most of my Aperture photo libraries reside on the g-drive, in a volume labeled "Aperture Photos." Something very weird happened a couple days ago that really spooked me. The G drive is configured in 4 volumes, and upon ejecting one of the volumes from the Finder window (by dragging it to the Trash which normally doubles as an Eject mechanism) my volume disappeared without the usual prompt that says something like: do you want to eject all So here I am, looking at my Finder screen, and 3 out of 4 of the G drive volumes remain listed in my Devices list, but the one with the photos on it is gone. With fear in my belly, I looked in the trash, and it looks like the contents of the entire volume ended up in there!!! So panic mode set it what do I do?!? How do I restore it? Whats weird is that the missing volume and its icon shows up on the desktop, but not in Finder, making it all but useless.

Mac Pro :: Backup / Retrieve Files From An External Hard Drive That Doesn't Appear In Devices?

May 13, 2012

How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. OS X :: Unable To Use Finder / Doesn't Rename Immediately

Nov 27, 2008

I'm having a slight problem with Finder, and it's quite annoying. When I right-click and select new folder, it doesn't let me rename it immediately. I have to press enter first.

The strange thing is, it only does this in List view.

All of the other views let me rename the folder immediately after I select 'new folder' on the context menu.

Is there a way to fix this?

MacBook Pro :: Why Won't External Hard Drive Appear In Finder

Sep 2, 2014

I have an Iomega 320GB SPHDU external hard drive which I was using as my backup disk for Time Machine and also to store other files (documents, photos, etc.). I have been using for some time now and never had any problems, however this morning, I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro, which is from early 2011 and on operating system OS X 10.9.4, using the USB ports and the hard drive did not appear in Finder. I checked to see if it had appeared in Disk Utility which it does, but Disk Utility is telling me that the hard drive needs repairing. When I try to repair the hard drive, I get the message 'Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.'

It would just show the little blue "light" flashing on and off, as if Finder were launching, crashing, launching, crashing. After some deduction, I found the problem to be my USB WD hard drive. Instead of having an eject button next to it, like an actual cd would have, this has a black and yellow wheel next to it. This is of particular annoyance to me, as i am now unable to burn any CD's. Instead a message pops up saying burn is currently in use by another program. I have tried everything to delete it, but it just wont go!
