I just noticed that my external drive used for Time Machine has disappeared from the Finder "Devices" section. Thankfully it continues to work fine and Time Machine can access it, but it makes me nervous!
Disk Utility sees the drive and partition just fine. I've run Disk Utility Repair disk both from the startup drive and the install DVD and there are no errors. Repair permissions is greyed out/disabled under both conditions. All the rest of my internal and external drives are visible in Devices.
My intel super drive died. Before I can get it repaired..I've got some work that needs to be done.Mac's External Superdrive appears to work only with Mini & Air.
Yesterday, (Mar 28,2012) Finder was listing my external drive but when I went to eject the drive, it no longer showed in Finder. I cannot eject the drive properly. It is showing on my Desktop. I've done a disk utility verfy disk and it is recognized and no problem was found. I tried a new USB cable and the old Fire Wire (which doesn't work??). I used a different USB port but nothing seems to work. I've also tried restarting. I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.6.8.
I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.
I have a new Mac Pro, OS X version 10.9.5, running FCPX version 10.1.3. I have copied all of my data from a 1T external hard drive to a new 4T external hard drive, but FCPX doesn't recognize my media files unless I rename the new drive to that of the old one. The problem is I want to continue using the old one. Is there an easy way to relink my files and keep the original name of the new drive?

New hard drive installed via Apple store to iMac ( MacOS X Lion ) and restored via Time Capsule now start up disk is named "untitled 1", unable to change name via "get info" or desktop or disk tools.
I've got OSX on a MacBook Pro and a bunch of programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator etc. and I'd like them to be accessible in my dock like iPhoto or iMovie.
How do I do this?
BTW, currently, I have Firefox in the dock but when I click on it a box pops up and I have to again click on the Firefox logo for the app to actually open. Then something that looks like an external hard drive with the Firefox logo appears on my Desktop. Why is this happening?
As the title states: How do I make external devices connected to my Mac appear on my desktop?Â
Cos the thing is that my Mac's hard drive got corrupted for whatever reason I don't know so I had to re-install my OS (Lion). Now the thing is that unlike before if I connected my phone, flash drive or wanted to install a new applicatiion it would appear on my desktop as an icon, now it doesn't.Â
I have a 500GB g-drive that I use with my macbook Pro(running Leopard O/S, current version). Because I just about maxed out the hard drive on the mac, most of my Aperture photo libraries reside on the g-drive, in a volume labeled "Aperture Photos." Something very weird happened a couple days ago that really spooked me. The G drive is configured in 4 volumes, and upon ejecting one of the volumes from the Finder window (by dragging it to the Trash which normally doubles as an Eject mechanism) my volume disappeared without the usual prompt that says something like: do you want to eject all So here I am, looking at my Finder screen, and 3 out of 4 of the G drive volumes remain listed in my Devices list, but the one with the photos on it is gone. With fear in my belly, I looked in the trash, and it looks like the contents of the entire volume ended up in there!!! So panic mode set it what do I do?!? How do I restore it? Whats weird is that the missing volume and its icon shows up on the desktop, but not in Finder, making it all but useless.
How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. I have two desktop macs, a macbook air, two iPads, and two iPhones. I have one Apple account that I use for all music - including music my college aged kids download. My problem is that I would like to get all the music into one library, delete the duplicates, then have the external drive store all the music. Is there a practical way to do this? This way I can set up my devices so that they all have the same music and playlists.Â
I'm having a slight problem with Finder, and it's quite annoying. When I right-click and select new folder, it doesn't let me rename it immediately. I have to press enter first.
The strange thing is, it only does this in List view.
All of the other views let me rename the folder immediately after I select 'new folder' on the context menu.
The Rename feature on the Finder Context menu has been very useful to me.Got an error message while trying to rename several folders. Now the Rename feature is missing from the Finder context menu.
OS 10.10 Yosemite, 27" iMacÂ
Just recently purchased at Thunderbolt hard drive enclosure (Akitio Thunder2 Quad enclosure) and the error happened while renaming files on the Thunderbolt drive. Now the rename feature is missing from all drives.Â
I've tried:
-rebooting -ejecting the Thunder2 quad and rebooting -power down the Thunder2 and rebooting

I recently purchased my first mac and I wanted to get more information about mobile me. I visited mobile me website and it asked for my apple id and password. Now I just noticed that "iDisk" is listed in Finder under DEVICES although I do not have a mobile me account. How can I remove it and remove any other configurations/settings that Mobile Me has made on my mac?
I have an Iomega 320GB SPHDU external hard drive which I was using as my backup disk for Time Machine and also to store other files (documents, photos, etc.). I have been using for some time now and never had any problems, however this morning, I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro, which is from early 2011 and on operating system OS X 10.9.4, using the USB ports and the hard drive did not appear in Finder. I checked to see if it had appeared in Disk Utility which it does, but Disk Utility is telling me that the hard drive needs repairing. When I try to repair the hard drive, I get the message 'Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.'
iDisk no longer appears on finder. Need to back it up before end of the month. Cant seem to do it from the web application where I can still see idisk. I'd like to select all (including the folder structure) and drop it /copy it to a new location locally on a disk I can see on my imac finder for instance. iDisk we application lets me select all, I just cant drop it anywhere. iDisk had gotten turned off in the sidebar and could be turned on using finder > preferences > sidebar and clicking idisk. When the transfer was made finder to finder all the files started coping over.
wouldn't even load. It would just show the little blue "light" flashing on and off, as if Finder were launching, crashing, launching, crashing. After some deduction, I found the problem to be my USB WD hard drive. It used to previously work fine. It has only one partition on it, which is HFS+ formatted. Disk utility verify/repair reports that the drive is fine.
1. I plug in my 2.5" external hard drive. It appears in Finder. I can see the contents of the main directory. 2. The moment I CLICK on any folder/file, I get the beach ball and Finder crashes. This is the only time Finder crashes.I've searched the forums but all the results are old and no solutions have been found.
I have 2 usb drives attached to my iMac which is running snow leopard. I am trying to share the hard drives so i can install some software on my Macbook but i cant see the drives in my finder on the macbook. I have checked all the settings on my imac and everything is shared properly but i still get nothing.
finder application stopped finding certain types of files on an external drive. The external drive (WD 80GB) is recognised and I have access to all files, however, when I search for specific files in the finder window it wont find pdf, txt, doc files. It does find picture files such as jpg. I have tried using the drive on my laptop (snow leopard) and macmini (leopard)
I am trying to pull up my Western Digital External Hard drive after connecting it via USB. I used to be able to open it through Finder and there is nothing showing up.
all About 20mins ago a shortcut appeared in my Finder sidebar, for something called Untitled CD. Instead of having an eject button next to it, like an actual cd would have, this has a black and yellow wheel next to it. This is of particular annoyance to me, as i am now unable to burn any CD's. Instead a message pops up saying burn is currently in use by another program. I have tried everything to delete it, but it just wont go! Whats more interesting is that I have a macbook air, and the icon appears even when my external dvd drive isn't plugged in.
I recently purchased a 500gb LaCie hard drive to use as as extra storage for media, not necessarily for back up purposes. I cannot seem to find it either under disc utilities or in the finder window. Has anyone had this issue with a hard drive and if so any suggestions?
My external WD 320GB hard drive wont show up on Finder when I connect it up. Ive been having this problem ever since I pulled it out without ejecting it - I know thats bad but my macbook froze and I had no choice.Â
Now my external hard drive wont show up on Finder, I even tried disk utility and I was able to verify the disk & then repair it, but its like I cant use the hard drive anymore. Every time I try to add files to it or remove files my laptop freezes and I cant do anything.Â
Its got to the point where all I want to do now is get all my files off this external hard drive somewhow, Is there a way to get my files off this hard drive before its too late if isnt already so.Â
