Intel Mac :: Make External Devices Appear On Desktop?

Mar 17, 2012

As the title states: How do I make external devices connected to my Mac appear on my desktop?

Cos the thing is that my Mac's hard drive got corrupted for whatever reason I don't know so I had to re-install my OS (Lion). Now the thing is that unlike before if I connected my phone, flash drive or wanted to install a new applicatiion it would appear on my desktop as an icon, now it doesn't.

Intel Mac :: Why Do Devices Not Show On Desktop

Apr 27, 2012

I use a Western Digital Passport as my external drive.  When I link the USB I get no icon on my desktop and the device is not recognised unless I activate the WD Smartware to unlock it.  That's not a lot of use when I want to download some files from a computer (like my wifes's) (also an iMac) which doesn't have the Smartware installed. why my desktop won't register the drive and why my wife's computer won't recognise the thing at all?

Intel Mac :: Make Icons On Desktop With Links To Often Visited Websites?

May 16, 2012

I'm a new Mac-user having used PC:s for 25 years. On my Windows Desktop it was easy to place new icons with shortcuts to websites I often visit. I have tried to do this on my Mac, creating Bookmarks, exporting them to Desktop. Iicons appear. But when clicked they don't connect with the webaddresses I have given.

I have read Q&A from someone who tried to give similar shortcuts to customers, but I did not understand the answers. I'm Swedish and Mac Keyboard and Desktop menues etc are in Swedish so the exact terms in English may be difficult to translate. My problem is different since it's only on my Mac I need the shortcuts/icons/links.

OS X :: Desktop Icon Missing Under Devices?

Oct 26, 2010

I am helping a friend out with her mac. She by accidentally removed her desktop icon under devices and needs to get it back. The best way for me to elaborate is to explain, you know when you are in a program...and you want to open a document on your desktop, so you use that programs open function and you look on the left for your desktop icon which falls under Devices at the top left...well that desktop icon is missing.

I tried searching for devices folder on the mac but was unable to find it, I was just going to drag a desktop shortcut into this folder...

Intel Mac :: Why Do External Hard Drives No Longer Show Up On Desktop

Jun 22, 2012

I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

IMac (Intel) :: Time Machine / External HD And Copying Backup To Desktop

Jun 5, 2014

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting?

Software :: Can Virtual PC Recognize Input Devices On Desktop

Sep 14, 2008

I have Virtual PC for Mac (version 7.0.2) and I'm running the home edition of Windows XP on it. I also have the Mac G5 (OS 10.4.11, Tiger edition).

I have a universal remote control that can be edited in the Windows platform only, but when I connect the remote to the Mac it does not appear within the Windows desktop or remote control software on the Windows side.

Is there a software patch that allows third party plug-ins to appear on the Windows XP desktop within Virtual PC for Mac?

OS X :: Macbook Cluttering Up External Devices

Jul 13, 2009

I am new to Mac and like it so far. However, I am having some difficulty in one area. Whenever I connect an external device such as a mp3 stick or my psp via usb the device will autorun like crazy either uploading or downloading something. I cannot tell. When I hook it up to my PC I will find hidden files like .fseventsd and .spotlight . And if i delete something on the device it will create a trash bin and just move it to the hidden trash bin IT WON'T DELETE IT. Is there malicious software on my OS causing this or is this a simple fix I can disable in the control panel?

OS X :: External Drive Does Not Appear In Finder Devices?

Apr 30, 2010

I just noticed that my external drive used for Time Machine has disappeared from the Finder "Devices" section. Thankfully it continues to work fine and Time Machine can access it, but it makes me nervous!

Disk Utility sees the drive and partition just fine. I've run Disk Utility Repair disk both from the startup drive and the install DVD and there are no errors. Repair permissions is greyed out/disabled under both conditions. All the rest of my internal and external drives are visible in Devices.

Mac Pro :: Ejected External HD And All USB Devices Stopped Working

Mar 15, 2012

I've got a 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, and there seems to be some problems with my USB "system". When I eject an external hard drive, my usb mouse and keyboard will stop working for a short while, sometimes requiring that I unplug and plug them back in. Also, when I try to set my default audio input/output device to my USB interface, it resets every single time I turn the computer on and off. Not sure if these are related, but it seemed relevant.

Laptops :: External G Drive Volume Disappear From Macbookpro Devices List?

May 13, 2009

I have a 500GB g-drive that I use with my macbook Pro(running Leopard O/S, current version). Because I just about maxed out the hard drive on the mac, most of my Aperture photo libraries reside on the g-drive, in a volume labeled "Aperture Photos." Something very weird happened a couple days ago that really spooked me. The G drive is configured in 4 volumes, and upon ejecting one of the volumes from the Finder window (by dragging it to the Trash which normally doubles as an Eject mechanism) my volume disappeared without the usual prompt that says something like: do you want to eject all So here I am, looking at my Finder screen, and 3 out of 4 of the G drive volumes remain listed in my Devices list, but the one with the photos on it is gone. With fear in my belly, I looked in the trash, and it looks like the contents of the entire volume ended up in there!!! So panic mode set it what do I do?!? How do I restore it? Whats weird is that the missing volume and its icon shows up on the desktop, but not in Finder, making it all but useless.

Mac Pro :: Backup / Retrieve Files From An External Hard Drive That Doesn't Appear In Devices?

May 13, 2012

How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. Here is my equipment: 8-Core MacPro 16GB-Mem RAIDMacOSX 10.6.8 | 2 X 1TB Internal HDD&Aug-2008 15" MacBookPro(That I used the Maxtor-External with mostly) DEVICE IN QUESTION500GB Maxtor One-Touch PlusFireWire 400 6-pin Connection Bus (2 Ports)Purchased in Early 2008 from Staples I can fit the back-up on my 2nd HDD in my MacPro or in my other External: 2 TB G-Technology G-RAID External1 x eSATA |  2 x FireWire 800 9-pin |  1 x USB 2.0Self Powered DC-IN  I have had a nightmare searching for answers, so any options you might have would be tremendously helpful. Mac Pro :: SSD As Boot Drive - Make Desktop In Bay 2?

Jul 5, 2010

So I am contemplating getting an SSD as my boot drive. I read a huge article on anandtech talking about how SSD degradation works. So I would only want the OS and Applications I have to be on the SSD. I know how to change my downloads to go to a different drive and set up my iTunes music folder somewhere else too. However, how could I make the desktop be on a drive in bay 2? Or photo booth pictures to go to the drive in bay 2? Or an iPhone backup? Basically, how can I get everything to not go on the SSD besides just the necessary files for the OS and my applications? I just don't want a bunch of random files being written to the SSD.
