Intel Mac :: Moving From Leopard To Lion And Only 1 GB Of Memory
Feb 26, 2012
Just finished installing Snow Leopard in preparation to download Lion on our desktop.
I purchased the Snow Leopard DVD and installed with success. I went to purchase Lion through the App store and received a message.
"Lion needs at least 2 BG of memory to download" There is only 1GB of memory left. Can I "trash/dump" something? If so, HOW??

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro that is running a little slow lately.I've done four years of work on it and since it's time for me to upgrade for Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Lion I thought I'd blow everything away and then restore.I always hear Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy) recommend starting from scratch and then restoring about once a year.I'd like to install Lion as a new installation onto my MacBook Pro and then use Time Machine to do a complete system restore.I have Time Machine backing up my system every day on a 500G external drive via firewire. It's completely up to date.
1)Will I see improvement from blowing everything away, installing the new OS (Lion) and then restoring? It seems to me that if I do that I'm just putting all the same garbage that I've built up over the past four years right back where it was. Might as well just do the full Lion install and let it restore everythign on it's own.
2)Say I load Lion fresh; isn't it going to run through that whole "new user" 30 minute script where I have to input all kinds of information? Then I connect my external drive and make it do a complete restore?

I'm picking up Snow Leopard and a new iPod classic on the 19th. I have currently got Leopard 10.5.8 and a precious song collection, which i backed up onto my external hd along with my photos. I want to move it back into SL with no issues - is a simple copy-back good enough?

I just ordered a new MBP 13.3' and I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to move my existing Leopard installation (White Core Duo Macbook), along with all my files.
Instead of migrating however, I want to swap my existing hard drive to the one of my new Macbook Pro since it's a 320Gb 7200rpm drive.
Is this going to work if I just drop in my old hard drive to my new MBP?

get my mail from my Local Storage in the On My Mac section of Mail to my Google GMail account? I have been trying to do this by moving this folder by folder by folder and I have not been having luck with this. It appears to go very slow and oftentimes it simply does not work so this mail is stuck in a local folder somewhere and i have no ability to put it in with my other mail (stored on GMail) and I cannot sort it the way I would like to.

I have a mid-2010 27" iMac, which I've just installed a new 256 Gb SSD (blazingly fast!!!) which I want to use as my primary hard drive. The 1Tb Hard drive which I'm now using will continue to be in the machine, but will serve as the document storage drive. I am using Lion and have everything backed up via Time Machine. The SSD has a clean install of Lion.Â
What I want to know is how can I move all of my applications over to the SSD while still keeping the documents on the 1Tb Hard Drive. Should I use my Time Machine with the Migration Assistant to do this? If I do, how do I then delete all applications off the 1Tb Hard Drive while keeping my documents? Although I have everything backed up, I'm worried that as has happened before when migrating over to a new computer, the Time Machine backup drive will not let me access previous backups once I migrate everything.Â

I know there are some other threads on this, but none seem to have a definitive answer. So this issue happened on my previous MacBook Pro with Leopard and then again with Snow Leopard. Now, it's happening again on my brand new 27" iMac. Every time I restart and bring up the dashboard, my weather widget loads and then jumps down a quarter of an inch or so on the screen. How can I stop this from happening and why hasn't Apple fixed this after 2 years?

My macbook pro started acting funny yesterday. The mouse became unresponsive, then started moving by itself, closing windows, and creating new folders on my desktop. It's like someone is remote controlling it. Google tells me this might be a trojan horse? It sounds similar to the problem discussed in this thread [url]...

I'm on 10.6.8, I've just moved my mobileme email to iCloud and I've always been using the @mac.com address. After my move, and updating my desktop mailbox to IMAP, I don't receive any mails sent to @mac.com, only those sent to @me.com. (And any mails sent to aliases are not receieved either.) The mails are not received online on the web app either.

My wife has a 2009 27" iMac that has been perfectly fine since we purchased it. I had upgraded my old Macbook Pro to 8GB of ram and had the old 2GB sitting around. It was DD3 1066 just what hers took so decided to put the ram in her machine. Shut it down, unplugged all the cables, flipped it over on a towel and inserted the ram. Booted it up and now I get this same effect as the pictures in this thread: [URL]..
We took our own pics but they did not come out well. Both the upper corners have this. Never had an issue before and we are in a climate and humidity controlled room. Obviously the machine is out of warranty but I know this was a problem before on 27" models.  Literally it was fine, turned it off, put in the ram, flipped it back over, and turned it back on then the spots were there.Â
Has a real root cause ever been found for this? Worth it to pull the glass and check the screen itself?

When I am doing an update software for my OSX 10.6.8 the looking for update bar only goes about 1/3 across the bar then stops and idles with the blue lines still moving. This happens on both Firefox and Safari. Is the apple server busy or is this a sign of the flashback trojan horse?

I have a 4 yr old macBook Air with solid state disk capacity 120 GB. It has loads of music and about 12000 photos on it and the disk is getting full.I also have an iPhone 4s.I am treating myself to a new iMac with 1 Tb drive.I guess it would be sensible to move most photos and music to the new iMac.(I have a 500Gb hard drive I use to back up the macAir)
Re photostream - does it store photos on the Macbook itself? Can I set up my phone to send photos to the iMac instead of the current macbook air? How?How do I keep duplicates of some of the photos on the macbook?

I recently tried to use my final cut express program and it would not open.I called Apple and I was told that it ran in my older iMac because I had Snow Leopard installed in it and I upgraded to Lion, now, my new iMac doesn't have Snow Leopard in it and Im out of luck. Not only do I like FCE, I learned to use it and I want to continue doing so, I bought it from the Apple store and later I also purchased the upgrade, can I have both OS's in my mac and choose the start up disk like I did iwth OS9 and OSX?

yesterday night I decided to moving (not coping) about 100 Gb of data (two WMWare virtual images of Windows XP)from an external USB disk to my internal hard disk. The process starts and I see it will takes about 3 hours. I decide to stop the process to start it again just before going to sleep. So I click on x button of the moving window. After few seconds the moving process stops. But opening the source folder I had a very unpleasant surprise: no files at all.I check the destination folder: just few files of about 50 MB (obviously). I immediately removes the external USB disk to avoid other damages.Â
1. where are my data?
2. is there a easy way to recover them?Â

I am trying to set up a folder action to do the following... When a file is added to the "images" folder a new dated subfolder would automatically be created, and the file would be moved to this new dated subfolder.Â
Here's what I have so far (which I'm sure is way off base)Â
1) Folder action receives files and folders added to "Images"
2) Filter finder items - Find files where ALL of the following is true: Kind is ANY
3) New Folder - Name is "_" Where: "Images"
4) Add Date or Time to Finder Item Names: Add Date to folder name
5) Move Finder Items: This is the step that I'm stuck on. I don't know how indicate the newly created folder in step 3Â
Another question I have is how to make automator check to see if there's already a subfolder with the current date and put the file in that subfolder instead of creating a new subfolder with a duplicate name.Â

How do I move my iphoto picture library to an external drive and delete from my HD and then access through iphoto? I lost my iphoto library so I have everything in Masters on my HD. When I import to iphoto, it groups all the photos and sates into various events. Is there a way to get my organization back or is it another manual process? Also, I can't import all my photos because there is not enough space?
