Intel Mac :: Moving/copying Backups.backupdb Folder From Ext. Hdd

Feb 15, 2012

Hi. How do I copy or move backups.backupdb folder from my ext. hdd (WD My Book 1 Tb) to Mac hdd (Machintosh HDD). I use Time Machine for backing up directli on my ext. hdd with one partition. Now I want to make two parttions on My Book, one reserved and limited only for backups. For that reason I need to restore and wipe ext. hdd, and I don't want to lose existing backup, I want them temporaly save in Mac hdd and after reformating ext. hdd put back on it. Any sugestions how to do it on the easyest possible way???

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Are The Date And Time Not Updating In Backups.backupdb Folder

Feb 2, 2012

I just started using Time Machine on my early 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.7.2. After the initial full back-up and first few updates, the backup folder (on an external 1.5 TB Firewire drive) continues to show the original "date modified" of the very first back-up and lists the size as a ridiculous 2.48 GB. (Using BackupLoupe, I know it actually is 280 GB, reflecting the size of my internal HD). why this folder's info is not updating in the finder (even using "Get Info")? Are my back-ups really there? (It certainly seems so according to BackupLoupe).

OS X :: Copying Time Machine Backups To A New Disk?

Aug 16, 2010

My Time Machine Backups, formatted as Mac OS Extended case-sensitive with journaling, is outgrowing my 1T Seagate Freeagent external hard disk. I would like to replace it with a 1.5T Seagate Freeagent.

I read that Disk Utility could be used to restore my old Time Machine Backups to the new disk, but I have tried this several times in vain. There was probably no problem during the initial phase of block copying, but the process always aborted with an error message that read, "input/ output error". I had formatted my new disk as Mac OS Extended with journaling. I did not forget to erase the new hard disk. I did not allow my iMac to sleep in case this might have caused the problem. As a last resort, I even tried to copy just the backup folder with "cp -Rp" only to learn that this did not work.

Intel Mac :: Moving Folder On Windows Server - System Password Asked

Jun 1, 2012

At work I work on a mac, but our files are on shared windows network drives. There's one particular drive which causes our mac users problems. It doesn't happen on all folders/files, but on some of them the following happens. I try to move a folder to another location, but then suddenly my mac asks for the system password. I fill that in and press ok, but nothing is moved. The folder is still in the same location. This only happens om certain folders and the funny thing is: when I try it on of the following days, the problem for that folder is gone and I can move the folder to the folder I wanted it to move.

But in the meantime there are other folders which can't be moved. Support - being not into Mac strangely enough - says it's a Mac problem and I should update to 10.7. It happens only to me and my colleagues at the place/office where I work. The windows server is at some place else so everything goes via internet. I keep insisting it's some kind of permissions thingy. Support says it's a Mac thing. What can be the problem and how can I make it clear to them that is isn't a mac thing?

OS X Yosemite :: Finder Moving Files Not Copying?

Dec 5, 2014

I have been using a mac for over 15 years but this one has me stumped.

When coping files I have always held down 'option' to copy the file. A small green plus symbol appears and the files then copy into the target folder, or hard drive.

I have a Mac Pro, with the latest updates of Yosemite .... but now the files are moving and NOT copying.

So when I back something up, they are no longer in the original location, only where i have copyied them to. They disappear.

Should I be using cut and paste instead?

Applications :: Moving / Copying Files From Mac OS To XP VMware Fusion

Sep 19, 2008

How can I get files from the Mac OS side over to the VMware/Windows side where I can work on them with Windows apps?

Moving files from Windows XP/VMware Fusion to a destination on the Mac OS side is as easy as dragging files over to Finder and dropping them when the Finder window becomes active. However, I haven't been able to do the reverse operation.

There's got to be an easy way to move files from the Mac side over to XP/VMware.. But I might lose my mind before I discover it.

OS X Yosemite :: Rules Copying / Moving Messages In Mail 8.1

Dec 6, 2014

I have rules that sort new mail into a number of mailboxes on iCloud, and also copy the mail to similar mailboxes local to my desktop.  The rules seem to want the "move" action first, followed by the copy action, as no mater how I enter them, they are rearranged.  After I edit a rule and have the destination mailboxes set, they look OK, but then when I revisit the rule after saving, the destination mailboxes are changed.  I am not able to get this to work at all consistently.  I have about 30 rules to sort incoming mail.

I want to do it this way so that I can get a local copy of my mail and also have a copy in the cloud for viewing with my mobile devices.  I eventually delete all the iCloud mail and archive the mail in local folders offline.  So it would be nice to be able to get the two copies of new mail in the cloud and locally to work.

OS X :: Copying New Files To Another Folder With Folder Action?

Nov 19, 2009

Is there a way to create a folder-action that accomplishes what I'm about to describe?

I have iTunes-library (like most of us do). What I would like to accomplish is to copy my library to a server on my network. Of course I can do the initial copying manually, but what I would like to do is that whenever I add content to my library, a folder action kicks in, and copies that new content to the server.

Now, I created a folder action with Automator, and it kinda works. What it does is that it looks at certain folder, gets folder-contents (subfolders included, since iTunes-library resides in subfolders), and copies them to another folder. It works, but what happens is that it copies the subfolders and their contents AND the individual files separately. I mean that if I copy a folder called XXXX which contains subfolders called ZZZZ and YYYY, which in turn contain files ABCD and 1234, it doesn't copy the folder XXXX, but it does copy the subfolders ZZZZ and YYYY and their contents. All well? Well, no, since it also copies the individual files (ABCD and 1234) to the root of the destination-folder. What I would like to copy the folders in similar way they are in the original folder.

Also, what happens when I reboot my computer? When I log back in, would the folder copy the entire folder-structure all over again? I mean, I log in, the folder-actions runs, and copies the contents of the folder. What I would like it to do is to only copy files over when new files/folders are added.

I have also tried to delete everything on the desktop and when I open itunes it automatically creates the same files on my desktop again.

ITunes :: Not Linking Files For Playback - Copying To Folder On Computer

Jun 24, 2012

I've downloaded shows from itunes, they are on a hard drive. Before, when I chose to play the file on itunes, it used to simply link (or source) the file from the hard drive, but recently it started copying the file to the iTunes folder (on my computer). This is very frustrating because I simply don't have enough space in my computer to have contain all these HD videos. Is there any way to have it linking to my files rather than having it copy over?

OS X Yosemite :: Time Machine Only Shows Backups Of Applications Folder

Dec 7, 2014

I have not had to restore anything from backups for a while, however in the past, before installation of Yosemite I have on occasion had the need to restore a file or folder, mostly from the ~/Documents folder.and never had a problem.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1.

Now when attempting to restore a folder that resides in the ~/Documents folder I find that there don't seem to be any backups available. In can see a timeline to the right of the Time Machine screen that goes back many months, but in fact the only folder that I seem to be able to restore from is the Applications folder. None of the other folders show any available backups, however I know there were backups.

The documents folder is of course not on the list of folders/files to exclude from the backup.

How can this be fixed ? Is this perhaps a file permissions error on the timemachine hard drive that can be foxed with the disk utility?

I don't use iCloud drive or iCloud backup or at least I don't think so. Are there any settings that pertain to Time Machine in relation to iCloud backup that I should check ?

This behavior greatly concerns me. I've had a hard drive crash several years ago. Fortunately I did not loose a lot, only a few ripped CDs in the iTunes library which were easy enough to rip again. That crash was the reason I bought an external backup drive the next day an Time Machine has served me well since then. I don't want to loose the work I have in the documents folder.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Backups Excluding Bootcamp But Want One Folder Included

Aug 21, 2014

I use Bootcamp occasionally for some software that is not available on a Mac as well as MS Office,  but unfortunately, I had the partition set to 150 Gb when I set it up which is way too much. I don't want to reformat etc. to reduce the size so just recently, I decided to use that partition for my iTunes folder plus Gb's of work documents which suits me just fine.

I have Time Machine setup to backup my Mac and whereas before I had Bootcamp excluded, I am now trying to have the settings so that all of Bootcamp is excluded EXCEPT for 2 folders - iTunes and Personal. I can't see a way to do this because since I have Bootcamp excluded, the subfolders are non-selectable. I tried one way where instead of selecting all of Bootcamp, I did a CMD-A and selected all with an idea of deselecting folders, but even this way, I am unable to deselect the 2 folders because all folders are greyed out.

So the question is - Is it possible to exclude Bootcamp and at the same time to de-exclude the 2 folders? If not, I suppose my option would be to backup (well, actually copy!) the 2 folders to my TM drive.

OS X :: Automatically Moving New Files On Desktop To Folder?

Feb 22, 2010

I've been using Macs for awhile, and am growing to love them for sure. I'm starting to dabble with Applescript, and things like that... just delving into the magic of Apple products, and I'm coming up with a few questions, one of which I'm posting here!

I'm interested in leaving three icons on the desktop at all times. My "Macintosh HD" icon, a "Lost&Found" folder and a alias to a server I use consistently. All other files I want moved into the Lost&Found Folder on a consistent basis, and I want to delete these files weekly, or bi-weekly. I'm unsure as to if I should make an Applescript for this, or if there's a utility out there to do this. I have looked around a bit already, and haven't found much.
