I just ordered a new MBP 13.3' and I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to move my existing Leopard installation (White Core Duo Macbook), along with all my files.
Instead of migrating however, I want to swap my existing hard drive to the one of my new Macbook Pro since it's a 320Gb 7200rpm drive.
Is this going to work if I just drop in my old hard drive to my new MBP?
Anyone else having this issue while trying to open or install an existing Virtual Machine in Snow Leopard using VMWare Fusion?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI like to keep my Applications directory tidy, so I have my software in several sub directories. I haven't had any problem moving the .app files around until I installed Virtual Box. It installs under Applications without asking anything, and if I just plain move the .app file somewhere else, the program doesn't run.
So, coming from Linux, my first instinct when a sw doesn't work from it's GUI launchers is to try run it from command line to see any potential error messages, and sure enough:

Can I use my hard drive with Time Machine ? I got the drive in use already so my question is wether I can additionally use it as a backup disc without erasing its content? Do I just connect my drive and start Time Machine app and it will create Time Machine folder on its own ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I've just got a new MBP to replace my three year old model. I have a full external HDD with Time Machine backups on it going back in time. WHat I'd like to do is to have the new machine use the same disk for Time Machine backups, and to just carry on appending data - so that I can enter Time Machine from the new MBP, and see all of my old backups. I haven't migrated a TM backup onto the new machine, as I wanted a 'clean' install. When I connect the existing TM drive to the new machine, it doesn't recognise that the machine is full of backups - is there a way around this?

Time Machine (the app) recognizes all the backups made to its drive; however, System Preferences doesn't recognize the last backups and won't make automatic backups to the drive. When I try to force a backup, it starts an entirely new backup (as in, separate folder and the whole system).
I just want Time Machine and System Preferences to recognize the backup that I've been running for weeks.
I just got my replacement macbook pro, and copied all my data over to it. When I went to set up Time Machine, I noticed that by default, it wants to create a new backup sparse bundle. Is there any way to either use the prior one or merge the old and new ones together? Rant:I find it crazy that getting a new computer means losing 18 months worth of backups. I called Applecare about this, and their responce was create a new backup and then if you need to you can connect to the old backup in a read only mode. The guy on the phone made it out like this is the best way to do it, new computer - new history of backups.
Why is this better? I mean, the time machine file i was using was 550GB of data. My home folder is 400GB of data. So that means to backup anything new (which for arguments sake, we'll say is 15GB) I also have to backup the other 385GB. So now instead of the total backup size being 565GB it is 950gb - 385GB double backed up.This seems like a very amateurish method of implementation, as if the easiest way to program the backups was new computer new backup. The path of least resistance is not the method of best backup solution.
I have been backing up my computers to an external HD with Time Machine for some time, but I just bought a 1Tb Time Capsule today. Is there a way to move/copy my existing TM backups to the new drive (in the Time Capsule), rather than starting a whole new backup, so that I can preserve my existing TM 'history'? I could just start a new backup, but it would only back up the 'current state', and I would lose all the prior data.

I've used the iMac for a desktop workstation and family office file server since 2003. I've also used the iMac to run iTunes to feed an aging iPod. (ripping music from CDs, downloading video and audio podcast subscriptions and playing them on the iMac, etc.)Â
My goal is to eventually replace the iMac, but I want to shift all the iTunes responsibilities to my MacBook Pro now. Is there a way to copy all the necessary files and folders over so that the MacBook Pro can pick up the music and podcast subscriptions without any hiccups or needs to re-establish links? to date, I have never bought any music or movies from the iTunes Store. ALSO OF NOTE: I have backup copies of the Users folders on both machines on an external hard drive, if that helps.

I have an external USB drive containing my TM backups. I'd like to take the HD out of the enclosure and install it internally in my MacPro. Will TM just detect that the drive is now internal/SATA and continue to work, or will I need to clean it and start backing up from scratch?

After I installed maverick on my imac, my time machine backups don't work anymore!!!! I have a normal portable HDD attached to my Imac with time capsule backup from before mavericks was installed.I also has a Buffalo NAS as a second Time Machine Backup. Â
Time capsule does not recognise my Buffalo NAS and tells me that it is not available. It has previous backups from Mountain Lion for sure!My portable HDD keeps saying "Preparing for backup" for eternity. I can connect to my portable HDD and Buffalo NAS as a drive.  What I have been doing is to copy and paste the important stuff into the drives. But it really defeats the purpose of time machine.
So I'm planning on getting a new MacBook here shortly and was wondering how the Time Machine transfer works. A few questions:
1. Can I select which Data I upload to the new computer?
2. Is data from Address Book saved?
3. When I want to backup my new computer, can I keep the prior back up from my old computer and have a separate one for the new computer?
I've recently bought a new iMac and would like to migrate my stuff from my early 2006 iMac (first intel mac, 32 bit). There are several ways of doing this, but I'd like to achieve:
1) Identical copy
2) Defragmented drive (previously it was getting very slow)
As I know from using Windows, you cannot simply create an image from one PC and move to another, because of differences in the kernel. The new PC may never boot. I am moving from 32bit to 64bit, so that would be quite a change. Also, should I use the migration assistant, or boot from recovery disc and recover from my time machine backup? Will the latter not result in a more identical system? And, is that desirable? My old iMac has all updates installed, so it should be the same as the new system.
I have a mac book pro 13 inch with 300 or so gig of disk space. I would like to upgrade this to 1 tb. Can you use time machine to restore all your photos, videos, music and files to the new hdd after the os is installed on the new hdd?

My existing Time Machine drive was running out of space so I decided to get a much (much) larger drive and move everything over from the one to the other. In doing so, I followed the directions on this pageÂ
Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive up to around step 9. That's where I deviated a bit. Initially, I did just drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" from one to the other but after 5 hours of spinning it's wheels, it informed me that it had about a day to copy all the data from the old drive to the new. I didn't have a day (again, stay with me). So instead of copying, I figured I'd just start moving all the files. That way, even if I had to shut down my laptop (which I did, to come in to work), I could just stop the process and pick up where I left off -- the system wouldn't have to re-look at files that it had already processed. So I just opened terminal and ranÂ
cd /Volumes
sudo mv -fv <OLD DRIVE> <NEW DRIVE>Â
and everything seemed to be chugging along just fine. I let this process continue running over night and this morning, it was still working on the very first (ie oldest) backup directory. I aborted the process (^C), ejected the drives (and they ejected just fine -- no errors, no warnings), shut everything down and came in to work. Got in to work, plugged both drives back in (again, everything is fine) but when I went to kick the process this time (same commands as above), I keep getting the message "Operation not permitted" for every file and folder. Huh? It was fine with this last night.Â
So then I open up a couple of finder windows (one for each drive) and this time, I drag over just one folder fromÂ
<OLD DRIVE>/Backups.backupdb/MACHINE_NAME/Â

<NEW DRIVE>/Backups.backupdb/MACHINE_NAME/Â
and, after I authenticate, I'm given the error :Â "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified"Â ...
In finder, when you start a copy process, OS X creates kind of a "ghost" folder/file in the new location and in finder, it appears to be kind of greyed out. When I started the copy process (before it told me it was going to take about a day), it created the ghost "Backups.backupdb" folder as usual. But after it told me that it was going to take a day and I cancelled the process, the ghost folder remained and still appeared greyed out in Finder. In terminal, I was able to change to that directory as normal so I didn't think anything of it -- the directory just existed. I cd'd, moved files and all was good, as I said above.Â
After I ejected the drive, I expected that when I mounted the drive again, the folder would appear as normal in Finder. But it's still showing greyed out. And I can't double click on it to open it as I can the same folder on my <OLD DRIVE> time machine. I have to right click and select "Open in new tab", which it will. When I do, though, the directory appears empty despite the fact that if I change to that directory in terminal, it's populated with files and folders that were moved last night.Â
How do I "move" Apple Mail files from one machine to another? I have Machine A. It went ill & I merged its Mail files into Machine B. Now Machine A is healthy again & I want to move/merge Mail files on Machine B back to A. I'm concerned that if I "merge" B back to A, I'll get a lot of duplicate folders/emails.

I'm trying to do a favour for a friend. She has a 320Gb external WD hard drive which she used on her Macbook to backup with Time Machine. It is not partitioned and she keeps the "Backups.backupdb" folder with other personal folders she throws in there. Recently she sold her Macbook and all that was left was this hd. She now only has access to her work pc but it won't recognize her hd as she's apparently formatted it with option "Mac OSX Journaled". So she gave me her hd to backup and then format to FAT32.Â
I've been a Mac for a long time but have never used Time Machine, I simply copy my important files into an external hd as I feel it's cleaner and I've never really had HD problems with any Macs I owned. So basically I have no idea how this works. I managed to copy all of her personal folders into my hd as well as the one labeled "Latest" on the Backups.backupdb folder ("Latest" is actually an alias). But I can't seem to be able to copy the rest of the backup folders. I can copy them into my computer hard drive, but each folder (I'm talking about the ones labeled with dates, there are 35 of them) is around 70Gb. Now, of course that doesn't make any sense, as it would be impossible to have 35 folders of 70Gb each in a 320Gb hd. I can only assume they use aliases as well, but when I try to copy them individually or as a whole (enclosing folder) Finder says I have no space available for that (even though I have more than 320Gb available).Â
Now, in my mind it's completely idiotic to keep any folders other than the Latest one. She doesn't even own a Mac anymore. But she's freaking out that I'm going to lose her entire life (she's that kind of person). I don't want to open the Time Machine app because like I said I don't use it on my computer and these are not my files, so I do not in any way want to sync with this hard drive or backup to it. I'm on a 21" 500Gb iMac running 10.7.3.Â
I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings..My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings
1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs
2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area

1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season
2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc
3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?
4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?
5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details
6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?
What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?

A friend of mine downloaded leopard osx 10.5 off the internet, and told me it was a full version. But when i pop it in my MBP it comes up with the apple logo with the spinning loading sign at the bottom, and then the apple logo turn's into a stop sign, no disk movement no nothing just a stop sign. I'm was wondering if anyone can tell me what the stop sign is, i've tried booting it off my external hard drive but comes up with a folder sign and a question mark in the middle
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook with 1GB of SDRAM. I have OS X Tiger v. 10.4.6, and I just recieved Leopard v. 10.5.4, and I am attempting to install it. If it makes any difference, I have my harddrive partitioned - 40GB for OS X, and 30GB for Ubuntu Linux (8.10 Intrepid Ibex), and rEFIt to switch between the two. I booted into Tiger and popped in the Leopard installation DVD. A window popped open with an icon to install Leopard. I double clicked on this, and it told me to restart. So, I pressed the restart button in the window, and the computer restarted, automatically booting into the OSX DVD.
The Apple logo popped up, with the little spinning wheel. It churned for a few minutes, then it had a kernel panic: So, I did as the notification told me, and restarted. It automatically booted into the DVD again, and the same thing happened. Next time, as a booted up, I held the eject key down, and I was able to get the DVD out. So, I'm back to where I started, but I don't have Leopard installed. There are several minor scratches on the DVD, but nothing I would expect to mess with the DVD. Another thing: I popped in the Leopard DVD, and opened the Disk Utility after this fiasco, and verified the DVD. I got this error output:
