Data drive seems to be having bad sectors. SMART status failing. When copied to the new drive using disk utility all files have original size but fail to open. yet i can open files from original failing hdd.

I use Paragon NTFS to access a firewire/USB2 1TB drive. I recently noticed that some files on it, videos', won't copy to another drive. Using ViSTA and Firewire(Boot Camped) the Vista OS says the disk is unreadable, but the Mac OSX(10.5) just hangs after so many seconds. I have a white screen of death and I have tried to alt, cmd, p, r and unplug peripherals and the IMac and plug them back in etc. I did get it to boot from disc and was trying to create an image of my system but it can not copy it it has an input/output error. I'm just wondering if this solves the performance degradation issue of SSD's over time. Has anyone tried it and benchmarked the results before/after?
In theory it seems like it would work (albeit at the penalty of losing all data on the SSD).
Is there a way to check my hard disk for bad sectors? I dropped my MacBook off a 2nd floor balcony onto grass and I don't want to get a nasty surprise sometime in the future when it tries to write to a bad sector.
Please don't say fsck because there's nothing wrong with the file system because I dropped it when it was off.
does fsck or fsck_hfs scan a hard drive for physical errors also or is it only for the file system layer? Â

While their standard WD10TEVT is hardly available around here and if it's much more expensive (for what ever reason), I am interested in the WD10TPVT. Now that HDD has the new Advanced Formatting with 4k sectors which seems to be only a problem for WinXP. But could any Mac user share its experience with that HDD? Is it gonna work the same with Time Machine, backups, file transfer between disks or can issues occur when files are exchanged/transferred between disks with different sector sizes? Only want to upgrade one of my HDDs for now, so is there any preferable setup (in terms of which HDD to have the OS and which the files)?

So this time, I purchased a WD and migrated my system to the new drive sucessfully. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if the migrate function simply copies files or if it copys sectors of the hard drive. Basically I just want to know if Mac Migrate will copy the crap from the Samsung drive that might cause my new WD to act up - or if that's possible?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I have an '05 mac mini (pre-intel chip) with OS X 10.4 that while trying to transfer a file to an external hard drive gave me a blue screen (that wouldn't go away). After a hard shut down, I get to the apple and spinning wheel but nothing else happens.

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.
I have a LaCie Big Disc Extreme that has failed. The drive indicator flashes continuously, and the disk utility can not see it. I have tried FW800 and USB to no avail.

i desperately need your help!!! so i was at a meeting and didn't feel like taking notes, so i took hi-rez photos of the notes my boss prepared for an upcoming presentation we'll be giving at work. i go to my office and transfer all the photos to my macbook air then reformat my usb thumbdrive (it was preselected to microsft something something format), then transfer all my stuff to the 16gb usb drive. the next day i fly here (san diego), i go to my hotel room pop out my thinkpad and windows 7 says that before i can use my usb thumb drive, i need to REFORMAT IT!!! meaning erase all my stuff! what can i do? is there anyway to recover data from it??? is my only option to reformat my usb drive and then hang myself?

I have two hard drives in the computer - one that's got the OS installed (factory 150GB), and another I use for saving videos, pictures, music, etc (750GB). Now, I'm assuming that because the computer doesn't boot up, that the hard drive with the OS is the one that crashed? Is that a safe assumption?
Secondly, is it possible to recover the application files and other data that's been stored on the crashed drive? If so, how much should I expect to pay? Is it something a local 'work from the home' computer tech could do? The reason I ask is because craigslist is full of guys willing to work on the computer for a decent price.
I bought a new 500GB hard drive and I already have a 320GB in my 13" MBP. I'd like to swap the two but get all the data onto my 500GB HDD so everything is exactly the same when I turn it on. Of course I can use Time Machine for this without any major trouble, but the problem is I don't have a drive to put my backup onto and then load it onto my new 500GB drive.
